THE EDINBURGH CUP RACEDAY Saturday 5th June
WELCOME TO MUSSELBURGH THE EDINBURGH CUP RACEDAY - 5TH JUNE 2021 Welcome to our £120,000 Edinburgh Cup Race Day. We are delighted to enjoy the continued support of the European Breeders’ Fund (EBF) and Racing TV, the latter who is sponsor of our £30,000 feature race, the Racing TV Edinburgh Cup. This is our second race meeting since Covid restrictions were relaxed to allow Scottish racing fans back trackside, albeit in very limited numbers. Today’s increased crowd of 500 spectators (up from 250 at the previous meeting) is a far cry from the 5000+ crowds the Edinburgh Cup meeting usually attracts, but it is an important step towards returning to race meetings where we can once again enjoy that unique big-crowd-roar, as the runners come up the home straight in front of the grandstand. After more than 12 months of racing behind-closed-doors, it is such a pleasure to welcome back spectators, and whilst we understand that people want things to return to “normal”, this carefully managed approach is the best route to achieving that outcome as quickly as possible. Today for the first time, our racecourse bars will be open but in keeping with Government guidelines, we can only serve food and beverages at tables, social distancing will be in place, and no standing within the bar areas is permitted. We will of course, continue to learn lessons from each race meeting over the summer months and, with the appropriate approvals, we will safely increase the number of spectators at each meeting. It has been a long haul, for everyone including those involved in racing – from our own ground staff and operational staff, to the owners, trainers, jockeys and stable teams across the country, who have given unwavering support throughout this pandemic – thank you. I hope you enjoy what promises to be a cracking afternoon of quality racing here at Musselburgh and hopefully, we will soon be able to welcome back more of your fellow racing fans as the health crisis abates.

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: ‘‘‘‘‘ Selected to win the race. ‘‘‘‘• Good chance of being placed. ‘‘‘•• By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. ‘‘••• Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. ‘•••• Can be given little or no chance.
PLACING A BET HAVING A FLUTTER IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE FUN OF COMING RACING. 1. PICK YOUR WINNER!
Many people select a horse based on it’s name or jockey colours or go to the Parade Ring to view the horses. Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper. Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.
2. WHERE TO PLACE YOUR BET
1. In the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection. 2. With totepool at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse. 3. At the totesport betting shop in the Links Pavilion, which is identical to a high street betting shop. 4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club.
3. PLACE YOUR BET.
Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then Cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet. - Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off. - Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings. - Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. - Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards Enquiry’. GOOD LUCK!

A case can be made for all of these, but Kevin Ryan’s BOONIE gets the nod on the back of his promising debut victory at Beverley with a fair bit of improvement to come. Ayr-winner Red Warning also has better days ahead of him so is sure to provide a stern test, and both Big Boy Harley and Secret Strength can’t be taken lightly either.

ROA BOARD ELECTION VOTE FOR KEVIN HART
The 2021 Board election for the Racehorse Owners Association is open and will close on 21 June . I am supporting Kevin Hart to add another voice from the North to the ROA Board , alongside myself . Kevin is from the North of England , but has lived in Edinburgh for a number of years . His biggest success on the track was winning the Ayr GoldCup in 2015 with Don’t Touch . He was employed as a Finance Director and Chief Executive of various companies in the Oil Exploration Sector but , more recently , has moved to Non Executive roles , giving him more time to indulge his passion for Racing . He is extremely well connected in racing circles and , while he has mostly had Flat Horses , he has owned Jumps Horses as well and has a thorough knowledge of both codes . With his business acumen and racing knowledge , I believe Kevin would be a very good addition to the Board and support for the ROA Executive Team . It would be great for Scotland and the North to have another voice from our area around the ROA Board table so I would encourage you to vote for Kevin and encourage fellow ROA members you know to do the same . As a ROA member , you should have received an email from CIVICA Election Services ( CES ) with your voting link . On that link you will find Kevin’s manifesto with more background . Ken McGarrity ROA Scottish Representative

STATEMENT is fancied to make the breakthrough in Pattern company in this contest. Still relatively unexposed, she shaped well when second in the Fred Darling and is well worth another try at this trip having been ridden too aggressively in the 1000 Guineas. Maamora and Posted are feared most, especially if either are allowed to dictate.

PLAY SMARTER
A typically competitive renewal of this valuable sprint handicap. STONE OF DESTINY looked right back to his best at Goodwood and last year’s Portland hero can capitalise on a good mark. Han Solo Berger has also dropped to a handy weight and is feared most, with Sunday Sovereign not taken lightly either and a solid place prospect along with recent Windsor scorer Rose Hip.

ZAFFY’S PRIDE found the step up to 1m and Group One company beyond her in the Irish 1,000 Guineas but is a consistent sort and can bounce back in this less exacting grade.
