THERE ARE 8 HURDLES AND 8 STEEPLECHASE FENCES ON EACH CIRCUIT, WITH 2 OPEN DITCHES ON THE CHASE COURSE THE ALL-WEATHER FIBRESAND BEND WAS INSTALLED IN 2012 FOR SAETY REASONS ON THE TIGHT TOP BEND AFTER THE FINISHING LINE. THIS IS UNIQUE TO MUSSELBURGH RACECOURSE AND THE FIRST IN THE UK.
T TODAY’S TURE RACE FEA
Today’s feature race is the Prince Philip Perpetual Challenge Trophy Handicap Chase at 2.45pm The five-year-old KANDOR is day’s Philip a still unexposed but found his handicap mark of 117 too much on handicap debut at Hexham. He drops down to slightly easier xposed handicap 117 company here but will need to defy top-weight From one end of the handicap to the other, th CARDAMON HILL will likely prove popular in the market off 102. He has only been raised 1lb for his latest success and looks to be a horse on horse heading in ar a the ri he right direction. CARTONNE and UEEN BRANDY MCQU are both course winners so this track will cause no concerns, albeit urse winner the former unseated his rider last time out. AY CHAMPAGNE EVERYDA a and GANAPATHI have been kept busy in the off season so should be primed for this, while HIGH MOON s been given every chance by the handicapper, dropped a further 3lb. has b
JOCKEYS H TO WATCH
With the good guide on which jockey’s to follow. CHARLIE National Hunt season now back in full swing, we have a his last 9 rides, operating at a 44% strike rate. He comes MAGGS has proved worthy to follow with 4 successes from ope stance winner Freddy Robinson (2.10). here with just the sole ride on the course and distance Freddy NATHAN MOSCROP is another ng claims. With a strike rate of 18% in the last month, Nathan today rides Les’s Legacy in today that looks to have strong mon the lucky last Although failing to win the jockey’s championship here, NRY BROOKE HENRY often goes very close and is a very talented rider. Today, Henry has three chances at success but the best looks to lie with Cardamon Hill in the feature. e
TRAINERS TO WATCH
JENNIE CANDLISH has been in unreal form over the last month, saddling 11 winners from 43 runners. She often finds success here and saddles Mariner (1.00pm) and I’m Too Tired (1.35pm) who both can’t be overlooked It is almost impossible to rule out two time winning Grand National trainer LUCINDA RUSSELL around here. She usually plays a strong hand here and today looks no different with five chances across the six race card REBECCA MENZIES is another in flying form over the previous two weeks. She has saddles 6 winners from her last 15 runners and Spartan Warrior in the opener could prove the best of her three chances on the afternoon.
RACE DESCRIPTIONS
12:25 THE JOIN RACING TV NOW NOVICES’ HURDLE RACE
Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular two miles and four furlongs novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged four-yearsold and upwards which have not won more than three hurdle races.
1.00 THE ATHELSTANEFORD HOME OF THE SALTIRE JUVENILE MAIDEN HURDLE RACE
Juvenile races are designed solely for younger horses in order to allow the younger horses to gain valuable experience by racing against each other before taking on their older, more battle-hardened rivals. Initially, every runner in this one mile, seven and a half furlongs hurdle race is allotted 11st 2lb (fillies 10st 9lb) and this race is for horses who are yet to record a victory over hurdles.
1:35 THE RACING TV PROFITS RETURNED TO RACING NOVICES’ HANDICAP CHASE
This is a two miles and four furlongs handicap steeple chase for novice four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 95 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 90.
2.10 THE CMS CAMERON MCKENNA AND CLOSE BROTHERS HANDICAP HURDLE RACE
This is a one mile, seven and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 110. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb
2.45 THE PRINCE PHILIP PERPETUAL CHALLENGE TROPHY HANDICAP CHASE
This two miles, four and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 125. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.
3.20 THE MUSSELBURGH RACECOURSE PREMIUM ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP HANDICAP HURDLE RACE
Our finale this afternoon is a three mile handicap hurdle race for three-year-old and upwards which have been officially rated 0-100. As is all handicaps on this afternoon’s card the weight that each runner carries is determined by their official handicap rating. In this instance, a horse rated 100 would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95

HOW TO READ THE RACECARD
1. PICK YOUR WINNER!
PLACING A BET
HAVING A FLUTTER IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE FUN OF COMING RACING.
2. WHERE TO PLACE A BET
Many people select a horse based on it’s name or jockey colours or go to the Parade Ring to view the horses Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.
1. In the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.
2. You can play with Tote at one of the many betting stations around the racecourse, Tote offers pool betting rather than ‘prices’ or ‘odds’ offered in the betting ring. The Tote Guarantee you can be safe in the knowledge that they’ll never pay less than the price the horse wins at, and if the pool payout is bigger, you’ll get that.
3. Place bets from the comfort of your seat by visiting Tote.co.uk, the Tote Guarantee still applies and all new customer receive a welcome offer
4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club.
3. PLACE YOUR BET.
Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place Then Cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet.
- Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off
- Keep your bet receipt safe You will need this to collect your winnings
- Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’.
- Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards Enquiry’.

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet so privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to ma a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.
