PLACING A BET

HAVING A FLUTTER IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE FUN OF COMING

RACING.

2. WHERE TO PLACE A BET

Many people select a horse based on it’s name or jockey colours or go to the Parade Ring to view the horses Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

1. In the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.

2. You can play with Tote at one of the many betting stations around the racecourse, Tote offers pool betting rather than ‘prices’ or ‘odds’ offered in the betting ring. The Tote Guarantee you can be safe in the knowledge that they’ll never pay less than the price the horse wins at, and if the pool payout is bigger, you’ll get that.

3. Place bets from the comfort of your seat by visiting Tote.co.uk, the Tote Guarantee still applies and all new customer receive a welcome offer

4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club.

3. PLACE YOUR BET.

Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place Then Cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet.

- Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off

- Keep your bet receipt safe You will need this to collect your winnings

- Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’.

- Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards Enquiry’.

THE VIRGIN BET DAILY EXTRA PLACES HANDICAP HURDLE RACE

2.27 THE VIRGIN BET DAILY PRICE BOOSTS HANDICAP HURDLE RACE

This is a two miles and seven and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race Many of the runners aged five-years-old and upwards in this three mile race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.

Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular two miles and seven and a half furlongs novices’ steeple chase is for horses aged five-years-old and upwards

This is a two miles and four furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 115. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 115 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 110.

This is a two mile handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb

2.57 THE VIRGIN BET EVERY SATURDAY MONEY BACK HANDICAP CHASE

This is a two mile handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

3.27 THE VIRGIN BET OPEN NATIONAL HUNT FLAT RACE

As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four, five and six and will be run over two miles.

The one who appeals most is GAME MANAGEMENT, who followed his winning hurdles debut at Catterick with an arguably even better effort under a penalty at the same course next time The 4-y-o makes his handicap debut in this sphere off what looks a workable mark. Bashful may well return to form back at this venue and, if so, he will be a threat off a mark just 1lb higher than for the second of his two C&D wins last winter The in-form Heart Above and Sea Legend are others to consider

CABALLO DE GUERRA shaped with promise amidst greenness when third at Wetherby on debut recently and, with improvement on the cards, Lucinda Russell’s 4-y-o may well take some stopping. Beyond The Verge already has a bumper win to his name, so he can give the selection most to think about under a penalty, with Irish point winner Soldier In Mayo a Rules debutant worth keeping a close eye on, too

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet so privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to ma a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.
