4.27 THE BET365 HANDICAP HURDLE RACE
Juvenile races are designed to allow the younger horses to gain valuable experience by racing against each other before taking on their older, more battle-hardened rivals Initially, every runner in this two mile hurdle race is allotted 11st (fillies 10st 6lb), before previous winners are given a penalty dependant on the class of race which they won – 3lb for a winner of a Class 2 weight-for-age or Class 1 handicap hurdle race or 5lb for a Class 1 weight-for-age hurdle race.
This is a two mile handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 145. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.
This is a two miles and four and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap
Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular three mile novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged five-years-old and upwards.
This is a two miles and seven and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 135. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.
This two miles handicap hurdle race has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 110. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st 2lb so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage

2. You can play with Tote at one of the many betting stations around the racecourse, Tote offers pool betting rather than ‘prices’ or ‘odds’ offered in the betting ring. The Tote Guarantee you can be safe in the knowledge that they’ll never pay less than the price the horse wins at, and if the pool payout is bigger, you’ll get that.
3. Place bets from the comfort of your seat by visiting Tote.co.uk, the Tote Guarantee still applies and all new customer receive a welcome offer
4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club.

- Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off
- Keep your bet receipt safe You will need this to collect your winnings
- Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’.
- Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards Enquiry’.

In an open-looking contest, a handful of course specialists are taken to come to the fore Twice sucessful over C&D, SCOTS POET travelled well when third here on New Years Day and he can build on that effort with a stronger pace to aim at today. Fellow two-time course winner Cuban Cigar ran well in a better race on this card 12 months ago and he’s been given a chance by the handicapper, while last year’s winner Bashful is well-treated if back on song. At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet so privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to ma a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.
