TODAY’S RACING

THE TRACK

A CIRCUIT OF THE TRACK IS APPROXIMATELY 1 MILE. THERE ARE 8 HURDLES AND 8 STEEPLECHASE FENCES ON EACH CIRCUIT, WITH 2 OPEN DITCHES ON THE CHASE COURSE THE ALL-WEATHER FIBRESAND BEND WAS INSTALLED IN 2012 FOR SAETY REASONS ON THE TIGHT TOP BEND AFTER THE FINISHING LINE. THIS IS UNIQUE TO MUSSELBURGH RACECOURSE AND THE FIRST IN THE UK.

T TODAY’S TURE RACE FEA

A brilliant day of action across the seven races, with five Hurdle Series Final taking place With all the same prize money on offer for all these races, we will take a quick dive into the ultra-competitive Brindisi Breeze Final at ultra 4.25pm. With all 13 runners in with some sort of chance, last time out course and distance winner Prince Of Perth has gone up 6lb for his strong display. The seven-year-old fended off both the re-opposing Hostile Hotelier of (2nd) and You Some Girl (4th) who both could return the form Nicky Henderson reaches for cheekpieces on 2nd) Fierce Warrior who will be looking to go one place better than when runner-up at Doncaster. At a bigger price, unce back after a dissapointing effort last time out. the top-weighted Punxsutawney Phil could bounce dissapo

TRAINERS TO WATCH

LUCINDA RUSSELL heads the Trainers’ Championship and boasts plenty of chances to extend her lead as top trainer at Musselburgh She saddles eight live chances across the seven races but none look stronger than Johnny Ringo in the Juvenile Hurdle. Jennie Candlish has saddled 10 winners from her last 43 runners so is clearly a trainer to follow again She has just one chance on the card so Hostile Hotelier in the 4.25 could prove one to follow

RACE DESCRIPTIONS

2.50 THE RACING POST GO NORTH HANDICAP HURDLE RACE

3.20 THE LADBROKES GO NORTH GREY BOMBER JUVENILE HURDLE

SERIES

2.20 THE LADBROKES BEST ODDS GUARANTEED ON RACING MAIDEN HURDLE RACE

The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two miles, one and a half furlongs race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today

This is a two miles and four furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

FINAL

Juvenile races are designed solely for four-year-olds in order to allow the younger horses to gain valuable experience by racing against each other before taking on their older, more battle-hardened rivals This contest is for juveniles which have started in two or more Jump races in the North during the current season, at least one of which must have been a Go North Grey Bomber Series qualifier Run over two miles about one furlong, any horses carrying over 130 shall initially be treated as having that rating and highest weight will carry 12st

3.50 THE RACING POST GO NORTH LADY BUTTONS MARES’ HURDLE SERIES FINAL

This is a two miles and four furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares only Just like the previous race, this is another series final and to qualify you must have which have started in three or more Jump races in the North, during the current season, at least one of which must have been a Go North Lady Buttons Series Qualifier Their official rating will determine how much weight they carry.

4.25 THE LADBROKES GO NORTH BRINDISI BREEZE HURDLE SERIES FINAL

Our third of five series final is one for staying types, this time running over three miles. For horses aged four-yearsold and above, to be eligible for this contest horses they must have run at least once in the Go North Brindisi Breeze Series qualifier, whilst also contesting three Jump races in the north. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty –usually 7lb.

5.00 THE RACING POST GO NORTH SEA PIGEON HURDLE SERIES FINAL

Our penultimate race will carry the same race conditions as the previous race but this time but have ran in a Go North Sea Pigeon Series qualifier Over the two miles and one furlong, only horses rated four-years-old and above can participate. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage

5.30 THE LADBROKES GET REWARDED WITH LADBUCKS MARES’ OPEN NATIONAL HUNT FLAT RACE

As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the Flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to fillies and mares aged four, five and six and will be run over two miles and one furlong Weights are set initially on age before any penalties are awarded for previous successes.

Meet the retired race horse!

The “Queen of the North” retired racehorse Lady Buttons, will be joining us in the parade ring at 13:30 for an interview with her rider, Jen, and a meet and greet.

If you would like to meet Lady Buttons and learn more about her life after racing, join us in the parade ring from 13:30. You could even feed her a carrot!

Lady Buttons won 15 of her 33 races throughout her career under rules from 2013-2020, winning nearly £300,000 in prize money. She has then had a succesful career after racing, winning Champion Rising Star Racehorse to Show Horse at Olympia just before Christmas.

Speaking of their Olympia win, Jennie Durrans, whose partner Adam Nicol rode Lady Buttons in 26 of her 33 starts, said: "I would never have dreamed Lady Buttons could achieve what she did out there. She's a beautiful horse but there were so many stunning horses in that class – they’re all amazing."

RETRAINING

"[Racehorses] can do it all. Even after their racing careers, they continue to give us so much. I’m so proud of her and the others I have the privilege of working with.”

BELFRINA displayed a gutsy attitude when wearing down the front runner at Doncaster just under 8 weeks ago and, with further improvement on the cards, David Pipe’s filly gets the nod to follow up having had a breathing operation since last seen. Heading up the dangers is Inappropriate, who has gone the wrong way since making a winning start for this yard but can get back on track now handicapping. Johnny Ringo can edge out Spartan Warrior for third.

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet so privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to ma a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.
