There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:
1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.
2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:
• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.
• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.
• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.
• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!
3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.
4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.
5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!
6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.

Race Summary: It’s probably fair to say that PURE CARBON was flattered by his proximity to the winner when runner-up on hurdles debut at Warwick, but the horse that beat him that day looks pretty useful and, in any case, it was a very promising start to his career in this sphere. Harry Derham’s charge is taken to go one better here, perhaps at the expense of L’Astronome, who is an interesting recruit from the Flat for the burgeoning James Owen yard. Bumper-winner Roysse is also of strong interest.

TIMEFORMVIEW Opened hurdles account at Fontwell last winter and, having found the company too hot in a Grade 3 Sandown handicap next time, he duly got back on track with a gutsy victory at Southwell (20.4f, good) in April. No reason to think he won’t do well over fences, too, but this is a tough starting point. TFRHHIII
NUMBER OF DECLARED RUNNERS 6 (EXACTA)
Tongue Strap worn by No. 2, 6. 2023: GALOP DE CHASSE (FR) 7 11 0 Shane Quinlan 4-1 (Venetia Williams) 10 ran
F Betting Forecast: 9-4 I’d Like To Know (IRE), 10-3 Twinjets (IRE), 9-2 Masaccio (IRE), 11-2 Thelasthighking (IRE), 10-1 High Treason (GB), 12-1 Sail Away (FR)
Race Summary: THELASTHIGHKING failed to kick on following a positive start to last season but he is on a good mark if able to get back on track, a scenario which is certainly plausible given that he returns from a break with his yard going great guns. I’d Like To Know took very well to fences last season and is a much-respected main danger, while Twinjets remains capable of better in this sphere and Masaccio will be a threat if he adapts well to the larger obstacles.
1-2-3: 1.THELASTHIGHKING (IRE) 2.I’D LIKE TO KNOW (IRE) 3.TWINJETS (IRE)

2023: GENTLEMAN’S RELISH (IRE) 4 11 2 Nico de Boinville 11-4 (Nicky Henderson) 13 ran
Betting Forecast: 2-1 Bobajob (IRE), 5-2 Brookside La (IRE), 11-2 Wandering Ego (IRE), 8-1 El Cairos (FR), 14-1 Onelikethat (IRE), 16-1 Claim The Throne (FR), 66-1 Well Presented (IRE), 500-1 Kevano Breeze (GB)
Race Summary: The Skelton yard have been firing with bumper runners so BROOKSIDE LA could be the way to go before market clues. This looks a pretty deep contest though, one which Nicky Henderson usually targets successfully, so Bobajob has to be respected. Wandering Ego is another to note.
