How To Bet
There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:
1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.
2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:
• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.
• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.
• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.
• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!
3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.
4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.
5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!
6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.

Coral Challow Novices’ Hurdle
The Challow Hurdle has earned its place as a critical stepping stone for young hurdlers aspiring to greatness. Held annually at Newbury Racecourse, the race’s storied history stretches back to its inaugural running in 1971. Open to novice hurdlers aged four years and older, this race is contested over a distance of two miles, four and a half furlongs over ten hurdles.
The race has a rich history and among its many celebrated winners is Denman, who triumphed in January 2006 before cementing his legacy with a Gold Cup victory at Cheltenham in 2008. Another standout winner is Wichita Lineman, who claimed victory in 2006 for trainer Jonjo O’Neill and owner J.P. McManus. In more recent years, the race has been won by stars such as Champ in 2018, trained by Nicky Henderson, who later secured a memorable victory in the RSA Chase at Cheltenham. Hermes Allen’s victory in 2022 was a particularly dominant performance.
Other notable winners include Large Action in January 1994, who went on to establish himself as a top-class hurdler, and Bindaree, winner in 1999, who later achieved fame with a stunning Grand National win in 2002.
Paul Nicholls has found plenty of success in this contest over the years and his six winners mark him as the leading trainer for this race. His partnership with jockey Harry Cobden has been particularly impressive with the duo winning the last four renewals of this race (Captain Teague (2023), Hermes Allen (2022), Stage Star (2021) and Bravemansgame 2020)).
Nicholls has a tremendous chance of getting another this year as he enters Regent’s Stroll who is unbeaten in all three starts of his career to date. With Harry Cobden yet again in the saddle, they could make it five in a row. Dan Skelton’s course and distance winner The New Lion who is also unbeaten in three will be his biggest challenger though don’t look past the hattrick seeking Bill Joyce.
