How To Bet

There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.

2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:

• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.

• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.

• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!

3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.

4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.

5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!

6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.

Race Summary: Plenty of these look longer-term/handicap projects but JURANCON cemented the positive start he’s made in this sphere when chasing home another promising sort at Exeter 6 weeks ago, and he rates a big player here with a first-time tongue strap fitted. Kloth of Utopia, dropped in trip following his Ascot third is the obvious danger, ahead of Big Ginge.

TIMEFORMVIEW A fairly useful winner over hurdles in 2022. Off almost 2 years before coming in last on chase debut here in November but took a major step forward when second over C&D 4 weeks ago, looking a big threat to winner but perhaps still just needing the run after such a long absence. IN LOVING MEMORY OF

CHARLIE NUGENT

The Charlie Nugent Mares’ Steeple Chase

The friends and family of Charlie Nugent are delighted to support the Charlie Nugent Memorial Steeple Chase. Charlie sadly died of cancer in November 2023. Charlie was a drawings and watercolour specialist who worked for Christies and the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester.

He was an amateur jockey, an owner and a Steward. He was brought up in Chaddleworth, near Lambourn, where his father owned the gallops. His first ride in a point to point was a winner on Ballydonagh with Richard Dunwoody in second place. The best horse he owned was probably It’s a Snip who won the infamous Velka Pardubice in the Czech Republic. Charlie was very proud to watch his son Hugh ride and complete the Grand National on Fortescue in 2023. Charlie visited all the British racecourses finishing with Fakenham three days before he died.
