How To Bet

There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground ﬂoor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.

2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:

• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come ﬁrst.

• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come ﬁrst, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.

• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.

• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a ﬁfth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!

3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.

4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.

5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!

The History Of The William Hill Denman Chase

The William Hill Denman Chase is one of Newbury newer races and immediately became one of the most signiﬁcant conditions chases of the jumps season when it was established in 2000.

The race was originally named the Aon Chase and, run over a distance of an extended 2m7f, and has become a regular destination for leading staying chasers, many of which go on to contest the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

See More Business set the pattern when he captured the inaugural running the year after he landed the Cheltenham Gold Cup. He was the ﬁrst of ten winners trained by Paul Nicholls whose other winners included champions Kauto Star in 2007, Denman in 2008 and 2021 winner Secret Investor.

Kauto Star and Denman both went on from Newbury to triumph in the following month’s Cheltenham Gold Cup, a feat matched since by Coneygree in 2015 and Native River in 2018.

The popular Denman’s connection with Newbury, where he also became one of only three horses to win two editions of the Hennessy Gold Cup, now the Coral Gold Cup, in 2007 and 2009, was formally recognised when the race was renamed the Denman Chase in 2012.

Native River is the only horse to win the Denman Chase three times after his success in 2020, while his 2018 victory established Richard Johnson as the most successful jockey in the race with four wins to his name.

The History Of The William Hill Game Spirit Chase

The William Hill Game Spirit Chase is named in honour of twenty-one-time winner Game Spirit, who raced over six seasons in the 1970’s for the Queen Mother.

The race itself was ﬁrst run back in 1953, with the prize going the way of Marcianus for trainer George Beeby. In 1992, it was upgraded to a Grade 2. The roll of honour features a whole host of dual winners but it was Waterloo Boy in 1992 and then 1993, who ﬁrst achieved the feat. He has since been joined by the likes of Viking Flagship, Azertyuiop, Master Minded, Altior and more recently Funambule Sivola. The aforementioned Altior had a particular affinity with this race, winning it three times on the bounce between 2017 and 2020. Altior and Master Minded both won this race before winning the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.

Paul Nicholls is the top trainer with an impressive six wins with David Nicholson and Nicky Henderson one behind him on five. Nico de Boinville is the top jockey in recent years thanks to his impressive partnership with Altior however it is Ruby Walsh who has ridden the most winners, with four.

Funambule Sivola was excellent in in the 2022 and 2023 renewals for Venetia Williams and Charlie Deutsch, seen below winning it for the second time.

The History Of The William Hill Hurdle

The William Hill Hurdle is the richest handicap hurdle in the UK and has a long history as one of the most competitive races in the jumps calendar.

When it was ﬁrst run in 1963, the 2m handicap hurdle took place at Aintree and was known as the Schweppes Gold Trophy, but soon found a permanent home at Newbury.

It became an annual target for Ryan Price who captured four of the ﬁrst ﬁve runnings, twice with Rosyth, each winner ridden to victory by Josh Gifford.

In 1968 Persian War set a weight-carrying record when he shouldered 11st 13lb to victory and the following month became the ﬁrst of only two horses to win the showpiece hurdle and the Champion Hurdle.

It was another 27 years before Make A Stand, trained by Martin Pipe, matched Persian War’s achievement by which time the Tote had taken over the sponsorship.

Nicky Henderson holds the record for the most wins in the race, recording six successes, including with Iberico Lord last year. Gifford, who also won the race as a trainer when Deep Sensation triumphed in 1990, retains the record for most wins as a jockey.

Abandonment Policy

Tickets, Badges & Special Offers - in the event of racing being abandoned refunds on admission tickets purchased will be paid as follows:

a) abandonment before completion of the ﬁrst race – full refund;

b) abandonment before completion of the third race – 50% refund;

c) abandonment thereafter – no refund. Newbury Racecourse will not refund the cost of racecard purchases in the event of abandonment. Cash cannot be refunded on the day. Racegoers should send their tickets (as proof of purchase) for a refund to Newbury Racecourse plc, Newbury Racecourse, Berkshire, RG14 7NZ.

Hennessy & Racegoers Restaurant - If the meeting is abandoned two hours prior to the ﬁrst race a credit note will be issued If abandoned before the start of racing, the client has a choice – either transfer the booking to another meeting or continue with meal. To transfer booking to another equivalent meeting, the badge /ticket must be returned.

Hospitality Boxes. If the meeting is abandoned prior to the ﬁrst race or before lunch has been served a FULL REFUND is given. If racing is abandoned once lunch has been taken – 50% REFUND, if abandoned between 1st and 3rd race –25% REFUND; abandoned after the 3rd race – NO REFUND. Admission

All tickets, badges and other forms of entry to the Racecourse (including car parks and other surrounding areas owned by the Racecourse) are issued strictly subject to the Racecourse’s terms and conditions of entry. The terms and conditions of entry are available on request from the Racecourse Office and can be found on our website. The Racecourse has the right to refuse admission or expel an attendee where an attendee has breached or is likely to breach the terms and conditions of entry.

Betting

Laying of bets is subject to Racecourse terms and conditions. The Betting Ring Manager is located in the Grandstand ground ﬂoor, opposite Donna Italia, today. Customers of the boards and rails bookmakers should check their itemised tickets immediately on receipt, as mistakes cannot be rectiﬁed after the ‘off’.

Collecting your winnings: If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement.

NEVER destroy your ticket until after the ‘Weighed in’ announcement has been made. There may still be a Steward’s Enquiry and the ﬁrst past the post, or placed horses may be disqualiﬁed.
