CAMBRIDGESHIRE THURSDAY

THURSDAY 24 SEPTEMBER 2020 Official Racecard

THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU

Welcome to the 2020 Cambridgeshire Meeting – three days of racing I am confident will deliver on the track, even though off it things are not how we had hoped they would be. The team here had been working so hard in recent weeks and months to get the Rowley Mile ready to welcome a limited number of racegoers back this week and so it was disappointing to learn on Tuesday that the Government is postponing its programme of spectator pilots for sport. We respect that decision, because the most important thing is ensuring the health and safety of the nation at large and racing must play its part. The good news is that we are still able to race behind closed doors and welcome owners to the Rowley Mile and we are determined to put on a show. The Newmarket Gold Season, which began with last Saturday’s fixture, is all about quality, something the Cambridgeshire Meeting has in abundance across three fantastic days. There is much to look forward to, ranging from outstanding juveniles with designs on Classic glory in 2021 to one of the racing calendar’s great Heritage Handicaps, the bet365 Cambridgeshire. It all begins with today’s highlight, the Tattersalls Stakes (Registered as the Somerville Tattersall Stakes). A Group 3 contest with the potential to throw up Classic clues, it was won last year by Aidan O’Brien’s Wichita, beaten only a neck by Kameko in the QIPCO 2000 Guineas earlier this year. Last year’s corresponding card also saw an excellent performance in the Jockey Club Rose Bowl Stakes from Withhold, a former Cesarewitch winner who was successful on the July Course this August in the Gloriously Simple with MansionBet Further Flight Stakes. My sincere thanks go to today’s sponsors, Tattersalls, Rossdales, Jockey Club Estates, Bentley, the Federation of Bloodstock Agents and the EBF for their generous support, and to Al Basti Equiworld for their support of our owners’ facilities. All that remains is for me to wish all horses and their connections competing today the very best of luck. For those following from home, be sure to visit www.thejockeyclub.co.uk/newmarket and our Newmarket Gold Season hub, where you will find inspiration on how to make the most of your day. I hope you all stay safe and well. Best wishes SOPHIE ABLE General Manager

THE NEWMARKET GOLD SEASON WHAT IS The Newmarket Gold Season is a four-week period stretching across September and October encompassing the autumn highlights for town’s racing and breeding industry; the time of the year when Newmarket becomes the hub for the international horse racing industry. As well as featuring four consecutive weekends of high-class racing at The Jockey Club Newmarket, including the Cambridgeshire Meeting and Dubai Future Champions Festival, The Newmarket Gold Season starts with the Henry Cecil Open Weekend and concludes with the end of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Europe’s premier yearling sale. The Newmarket Gold Season showcases some of the world’s best and most valuable thoroughbreds in the sales ring, on the racecourse and at stud and promotes the town of Newmarket as a destination point throughout this four week period. Clearly 2020 will be an unusual year with a number of the season’s events held virtually or behind closed doors, but in more normal times the estimated value to the local economy of The Newmarket Gold Season is more than £40 million. Year in year out this is a strong maiden and TOROMONA can emulate 2017 winner and stablemate Ghaiyyath with victory in the race second time up having shaped really well on debut at Sandown a fortnight ago. Albert Camus was getting the hang of things late on behind the selection there and looks open to improvement himself. Keeper and Royal Champion head up the interesting newcomers.

PAT SMULLEN, winning the 2000 Guineas in 2003 onboard Refuse To Bend

Newmarket Racecourses is united with the racing world in grief this morning (Wednesday, 16th September) following the death of Irish riding legend Pat Smullen at 43. Universally admired for his skill in the saddle and his personality out of it, Smullen won races at the highest level across the globe, including two Group races at our own Rowley Mile racecourse. The first came in 2002, when he partnered Dress To Thrill to win the Sun Chariot Stakes, then a Group 2 contest, for trainer Dermot Weld, a man with whom his fortunes would be so closely intertwined throughout his career. Dress To Thrill went on to land the Grade 1 Matriarch Stakes at Hollywood Park for the pair to round out that campaign but the best was yet to come for them as far as Newmarket success was concerned. In the following May of 2003, Smullen and Weld were celebrating 2000 Guineas glory courtesy of Refuse To Bend, who held off Zafeen to score by three quarters of a length in Britain’s first Classic of the summer. It is fitting that Smullen should be associated with a horse by the name of Refuse To Bend, as he will forever be remembered for his courage in the face of his pancreatic cancer diagnosis, which came in March 2018. Smullen transcended the sport to become an inspiration for those living with the disease, at first being given a clean bill of health following initial treatments. He would go on to use his platform to maximum effect, throwing himself into fundraising efforts for Cancer Trials Ireland. Such was his standing in the racing community, he was able to pull together a legends race for the ages at last year’s Irish Champions Weekend at Leopardstown. Sir Anthony McCoy, Ruby Walsh, Kieren Fallon, Joseph O’Brien, Johnny Murtagh and Richard Hughes were among the modern day greats coaxed out of retirement to compete again, with McCoy ultimately winning on Quizical. More importantly, the race raised more than €2.5 million for Cancer Trials Ireland. Amy Starkey, Regional Director of Jockey Club Racecourses’ East Region, said: “Everybody in Newmarket is heartbroken this morning after learning of the passing of Pat Smulllen. He was an outstanding jockey, a brilliant ambassador for our sport and, most of all, a wonderful person. “The racing community is a close-knit one and I know that, despite our grief, we will rally around Pat’s family and friends in the days and weeks to come so that they feel the love, admiration and respect we all have for Pat and his legacy in the sport.” Pat Smullen rode 1,892 winners in Britain and Ireland, including aboard Harzand in the Derby at Epsom in 2016. He is survived by his wife Frances and their three children, Hannah, Paddy and Sarah.

PLAY SMARTER

BETSEY TROTTER bounced back in no uncertain terms when accounting for 19 rivals at Thirsk and, if in the same form here, she’ll take plenty of stopping off this 6lb higher mark, the same mark off which she scored on AW last October. The consistent Gale Force Maya probably doesn’t have much in hand of her current mark, but she is feared most nonetheless. Portugueseprincess is best of the rest.

Wichita had been runner-up in Listed company on his second career start and took the step up to Group level in his stride with an impressive victory on the Rowley Mile. The son of No Nay Never was sent off as a strong favourite for last year’s contest and he duly delivered in fine style, pulling clear of his rivals to win by seven lengths. Wichita has since put up two excellent efforts here at Newmarket at the highest level, finishing third in the Dewhurst Stakes and then only going down by a neck in the 2000 Guineas on his first run as a three-year-old. The colt has gone on to recently win the Group 2 Park Stakes at Doncaster.

PLAY SMARTER

FIRST WINTER displayed a willing attitude when successful on his first try over 1m at Sandown a month ago and with the form of that race working out pretty well, a 3lb rise is unlikely to prevent a very bold follow-up bid. King Ragnar’s runner-up effort at Yarmouth last week was a personal best and he has the same mark to work with, so he’s the obvious threat.

THE NEWMARKET CHALLENGE WHIP

The Challenge Whip is a unique event in the British racing calendar. Such is the heritage of the race, it has a direct link to the origins of Flat racing in Newmarket. Originally, the winner of the Challenge Whip was awarded an actual whip as a trophy, which now hangs above the fireplace in the Coffee Rooms in the Jockey Club Rooms on Newmarket High Street. The whip dates back to the reign of King Charles II (1660-1685) who is understood to have carried it in races himself. There is also evidence that the whip’s present wristband and lash consist of hair taken from the great horse Eclipse. In recent years, winners of the Challenge Whip have been: 2019

Felix (Fittocks Stud)

2018

Maori Bob (P Philipps, C Philipps, T Redman)

2017

Brief Visit (Cliveden Stud)

2016

Nigel (Normandie Stud Ltd)

2015

Golden Jubilee (Mrs J K Powell)

2014

Inspector Norse (Mr J C Smith)

2013

Gone Dutch (Mr J Richmond-Watson)

2012

Odin (Mr J C Smith)

2011

Vita Lika (The Hon. P and Mrs F Stanley)

2010

Scottish Boogie (Mr J C Smith)

2009

Dreamwalk (Mr P D Savill)

Today, the winning owner will be presented with a magnificent bronze sculpture to keep. Three centuries of heritage, one 2020 victor.

Impossible to rule any of the quintet out here. However, preference is for Hugo Palmer’s ZORAN, who has finished runner-up on his last 2 starts in handicaps and seems sure to go well again.
