SHADWELL DAY Cambridgeshire Meeting
Friday 25th September, 2020 Official Racecard
Richard Lancaster, Shadwell Stud Director A very warm welcome to the Rowley Mile for this year’s edition of Shadwell Day. After everything that has happened both domestically and globally in 2020, we are delighted to be racing at Newmarket this autumn and there is some top-class action for racing fans to enjoy. Today’s card is headlined by a pair of ultra-competitive Group 2 races – the Shadwell Rockfel Stakes and Shadwell Joel Stakes – both of which have attracted exciting runners, with the former acting as the second leg to this year’s £25,000 Shadwell Fillies Bonus. Although recognised as one of the world’s blue-chip breeding and racing organisations, Shadwell also plays a hugely important role in the local community, supporting several charities. Today would usually provide us with an opportunity to showcase some of the fine work Shadwell does in conjunction with various charities, including the East Anglian Air Ambulance as well as the Bob Champion Cancer Care Trust. However, due to covid restrictions our annual cheque presentations and the Shetland Pony Grand National cannot take place this year and we look forward to returning to some sort of normality in 2021. I would also like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to the team at Newmarket Racecourse for all their hard work and dedication in ensuring today’s event is a great success. They do a fantastic job and have been a pleasure to work with. It just remains for me to wish you all a wonderful day’s racing.
THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU
Welcome to the second day of the 2020 Cambridgeshire Meeting at the Rowley Mile, whether you are with us on course or enjoying the action from afar. If you are taking in the action at home today, be sure to visit our Newmarket Gold Season hub at www.thejockeyclub.co.uk/newmarket to make the most of the experience. Today’s card is sponsored by Shadwell, with the Group 2 Shadwell Rockfel Stakes and Shadwell Joel Stakes sharing the spotlight. The former went the way of Daahyeh 12 months ago en route to a fine second-placed finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita. A globetrotter of even higher repute was up next, Saeed bin Suroor’s brilliant Benbatl lighting up the Rowley Mile with a performance of genuine class. We can only hope to see something as special today. Such an outcome would be fitting on a day sponsored by Shadwell, given the annus mirabilis being enjoyed on the track by Sheikh Hamdan’s team. The famous blue and white silks have been carried to big-race success by the likes of Battaash, Mohaather and Enbihaar already this year, much to the delight of us all at Newmarket Racecourses. Many congratulations from us all and we wish them the very best of luck during the concluding months of the campaign. My sincere thanks once again go to Shadwell for their generous support, and to Al Basti Equiworld for their support of our owners’ facilities. I am also grateful to the trainers, owners and jockeys for continuing to deliver outstanding racing in the face of considerable challenges this year. The team here at Newmarket have also worked tirelessly to provide the stage upon which the human and equine athletes will perform and while I am always proud of the work they do, I am especially so this year. I wish all horses and their connections competing today the very best of luck. I hope you all stay safe and well. Best wishes SOPHIE ABLE General Manager

THE NEWMARKET GOLD SEASON WHAT IS The Newmarket Gold Season is a four-week period stretching across September and October encompassing the autumn highlights for town’s racing and breeding industry; the time of the year when Newmarket becomes the hub for the international horse racing industry. As well as featuring four consecutive weekends of high-class racing at The Jockey Club Newmarket, including the Cambridgeshire Meeting and Dubai Future Champions Festival, The Newmarket Gold Season starts with the Henry Cecil Open Weekend and concludes with the end of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Europe’s premier yearling sale. The Newmarket Gold Season showcases some of the world’s best and most valuable thoroughbreds in the sales ring, on the racecourse and at stud and promotes the town of Newmarket as a destination point throughout this four week period. Clearly 2020 will be an unusual year with a number of the season’s events held virtually or behind closed doors, but in more normal times the estimated value to the local economy of The Newmarket Gold Season is more than £40 million. KATARA took the step up in class and trip in her stride when a decisive winner of a Listed race on the July course last month, and with further improvement likely, she can pass this assignment. Daahyeh had strong form to her name arriving at Newmarket as she had won the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot on her second start, before then finishing runner-up at both the July Festival and in an Irish Group 1. The filly was sent off as the clear favourite for the Rockfel and landed the Group 2 prize by half a length, showing a good attitude to hold off the late challenge of her stablemate Stylistique. Daahyeh was stepped-up to a mile for her final start as a two-year-old and she put up a fine effort to finish runner-up in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

Benbatl developed into a top-class international perfomer in 2018, winning the Group 1 Dubai Turf in March before going onto further success at the highest level in Germany and Australia. After finishing an excellent second to the Australian wondermare Winx in the Cox Plate, Benbatl was not seen on the track for 11 months ahead of his return to action in the Joel Stakes. The absence was not a problem for him though as he made all for an impressive five-length victory. The six-year-old has been on his travels again in 2020, winning a pair of Group 2s at Meydan and then finishing third in the inaugural running of the valuable Saudi Cup.

LAAFY has been gradually pulling out more this season and is taken to make a winning transition to Listed company having landed an Ascot handicap off 101 earlier in the month. Last year’s runner-up Loxley is an obvious threat returning to Britain and his stablemate Walton Street shouldn’t be ruled out.
