THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU

Welcome to the third and fi nal day of the Cambridgeshire Meeting and what is one of the great afternoons of racing at Newmarket Racecourses in this or any year. I hope you have been able to follow the action from home so far this week and, like us, have enjoyed some thrilling and highly competitive racing. Please do remember to head to www.thejockeyclub.co.uk/newmarket and the Newmarket Gold Season hub for inspiration on ways to make the most of your experience today, wherever you are. A season at the Rowley Mile is invariably full of sights and sounds to stir the soul, chief among them being the bet365 Cambridgeshire. The great racing writer Alastair Down likes to refer to the race as the only nine-furlong sprint in the racing calendar, a description which paints a picture of the competitiveness of the contest. This cavalry charge of quality thoroughbreds heading into the dip is pure racing excitement and in recent years, the race has been graced by some superb winners. Last year it was Lord North who justified favouritism to put himself firmly on the map en route to winning the Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot this summer. Before this year’s renewal, there is the not insignificant matter of the Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes and Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes, a pair of Group 1s and two of the most important juvenile races in Europe. Andre Fabre’s brilliant Earthlight won the latter in 2019, while the former went to Ireland thanks to Jessica Harrington’s Millisle. Both have gone on to further Group race success this year, so we can hope to find plenty of form from both races for next year, just as we can from the Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes. This Group 2 was won by the smart Royal Dornoch last season, beating none other than the subsequent QIPCO 2000 Guineas hero Kameko. The Newmarket Gold Season is all about quality on and off the track and this period continues to excel itself when it comes to shining a spotlight on the stars of tomorrow. Today’s sponsors, Juddmonte, Blandford Bloodstock, bet36, the EBF and Bentley are all leaders in their fields and I thank them for their generous support. I am also grateful to Al Basti Equiworld for their support of our owners’ facilities. My thanks also go to the owners, trainers and jockeys racing with us, and my colleagues who have worked so hard to ensure racing has been able to go ahead over these three days. I wish all horses and their connections competing today the very best of luck. Best wishes SOPHIE ABLE General Manager

THE NEWMARKET GOLD SEASON WHAT IS The Newmarket Gold Season is a four-week period stretching across September and October encompassing the autumn highlights for town’s racing and breeding industry; the time of the year when Newmarket becomes the hub for the international horse racing industry. As well as featuring four consecutive weekends of high-class racing at The Jockey Club Newmarket, including the Cambridgeshire Meeting and Dubai Future Champions Festival, The Newmarket Gold Season starts with the Henry Cecil Open Weekend and concludes with the end of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Europe’s premier yearling sale. The Newmarket Gold Season showcases some of the world’s best and most valuable thoroughbreds in the sales ring, on the racecourse and at stud and promotes the town of Newmarket as a destination point throughout this four week period. Clearly 2020 will be an unusual year with a number of the season’s events held virtually or behind closed doors, but in more normal times the estimated value to the local economy of The Newmarket Gold Season is more than £40 million. Aidan O’Brien saddled three contenders in the 2019 renewal of the Royal Lodge, but it was the outsider of the trio who led home a 1-3-4 for the master Irish trainer. Royal Dornoch was sent off at odds of 16/1 for the Group 2 after winning a maiden from his previous six starts. However, he had been placed in the Richmond Stakes at Goodwood in August and he enjoyed the step up in trip on the Rowley Mile, coming with a late run to get the better of the favourite Kameko by a neck. The front pair both went on to contest this year’s 2000 Guineas and Kameko reversed the form in no uncertain terms as he landed a memorable success in the Classic.

Aidan O’Brien is represented by Ontario in this year’s race.

COBH’s form has a really solid look to it having found only subsequent Champagne Stakes winner Chindit too good at Ascot prior to resuming winning ways with a gutsy display over this trip at Salisbury, so he’s taken to make his first foray into pattern company a winning one. Ontario is a typical Aidan O’Brien improver who may emerge as the biggest threat.

The filly had won two of her previous four starts and finished runner-up on the other occasions, only going down narrowly in a Salisbury Group 3 lasttime-out. It is often said that you need a Group horse to win a major handicap and that was certainly the case in last year’s running of the Cambridgeshire.

£11,184 TO THE THIRD

As an unexposed three-year-old representing leading connections, Lord North was well-found in the market ahead of the 30-runner handicap. He had won the first two starts of his career and in his fifth race got back to winning ways at Newmarket with a decisive three-quarters of a length success.

Another Cambridgeshire where the ‘Group horse in a handicap’ premise likely very much rings true in the form of TEMPUS. He’s improved in fine style this year, winning a good handicap at Ascot very easily 3 weeks ago, and looks smart at least. His draw and step up in trip are both positives and he’s hard to get away from. His owner’s Derevo looks a big threat, as do Good Birthday and Ilaraab.

The Racecourse Executive will pay a travel allowance of £400 to any reserve that travels to the course on the day prior to this race, but which subsequently fails to take the place of a declared runner. For the avoidance of doubt, such payments will only be made to any such reserve which would reasonably be expected to travel on the day prior to the race and, thus, for which it would be necessary to begin the journey to the course before the deadline for a reserve to replace a non-runner has passed, i.e., 1.00 p.m. on Friday, September 25th. Trainers seeking to claim this allowance must seek prior confirmation from the Racecourse Executive before commencing the journey.
