SUN CHARIOT DAY SATURDAY 3 OCTOBER 2020 Official Racecard
THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU
With a brilliant Cambridgeshire Meeting only days behind us, The Newmarket Gold Season continues today with the Group 1 Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes. Named in honour of the 1942 fillies’ Triple Crown winner, this race brings together the best of the Classic generation and their elders over the QIPCO 1000 Guineas course and distance and has produced a host of outstanding winners from across Europe in recent years. In the last decade alone, stars such as Roly Poly, Laurens and Alice Springs have won the Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes, while 12 months ago it was Billesdon Brook who added to her Guineas success with victory here. Now five years old, Billesdon Brook won the QIPCO 1000 Guineas two years ago and saves her best for the Rowley Mile but it is far from being a one-horse race. This is a race that so often brings together the best from Britain, Ireland and France and we are delighted that it will do so once again this year, especially given the challenges presented by COVID-19. Elsewhere on today’s card, the £150,000 Tattersalls October Auction Stakes will be as keenly contested as ever, showcasing the talent on offer in Books 3 and 4 for the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. This is an opportune time to do so too, given the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale begins on Tuesday at the nearby Park Paddocks. I would like to thank Tattersalls for their support and wish them, the vendors and buyers the very best of luck with this year’s auction. My thanks also go to the Kingdom of Bahrain for their sponsorship this afternoon, as well as the EBF and Prestige Agri, and to Al Basti Equiworld for their sponsorship of our owners and trainers facility. Racing remains behind closed doors and so if you are enjoying the action from home today, make sure you visit the Racing At Home Hub at www.thejockeyclub. co.uk/newmarket to make the most of your afternoon with race replays, food and drink tips and more. The Newmarket Gold Season continues apace next week, with the two-day Dubai Future Champions Festival getting underway on Friday and we look forward to sharing more thrilling racing with you then. I hope you enjoy today’s racing and I wish all owners, trainers and jockeys competing today the best of luck. SOPHIE ABLE General Manager

PLAY SMARTER
This looks destined for one of the newcomers, with Aidan O’Brien’s BOLSHOI BALLET the most appealing of them. The Galileo colt holds Group 1 entries and confidence behind him in the betting would be an ominous sign. Fellow debutants Mystical Dawn and Movin Time are feared most in that order, while Zinc White is the clear pick of the quartet with experience.

THE CAMBRIDGESHIRE The 2020 Cambridgeshire Meeting came to a thrilling conclusion at the end of three days of outstanding racing. The eponymous contest, sponsored by bet365, was won in the most eye-catching style by Majestic Dawn, who powered clear of his rivals and never looked back, ultimately winning by four and a half lengths at odds of 40/1. The four-year-old had finished fifth in last year’s bet365 Cambridgeshire but few could have predicted a performance like this under a masterful ride from Paul Hanagan. Earlier in the day, Clive Cox made it a week to remember as Supremacy landed the Group 1 Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes to follow the previous day’s Group 2 Shadwell Rockfel Stakes success of Isabella Giles. A shot at the QIPCO 2000 Guineas next spring may not be on the agenda for the speedy Supremacy but Alcohol Free looks bound for the fillies’ equivalent after her Group 1 Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes success. The meeting had been due to welcome 1,000 spectators each day as part of the Government’s pilot events but those plans were put on hold when pilot events across all sports were postponed earlier in the week. Had racegoers been able to visit, they would have been treated to some excellent sport throughout the meeting, with Cloak Of Spirits, beaten only by the brilliant Love in June’s QIPCO 1000 Guineas, returning to the Rowley Mile to land the Listed Tasleet British EBF Rosemary Stakes, a welcome boost as her broodmare career looms. Kameko went one better than Cloak Of Spirits in the QIPCO 2000 Guineas earlier in the year and brought an end to a luckless run of defeats back over course and distance when winning the Group 2 Shadwell Joel Stakes. The colt overcame a Group 1 penalty to see off a
E MEETING high-class field that included last year’s winner Benbatl, in a performance of some merit. On Thursday’s opening day, La Barrosa continued his exciting upward trajectory for Charlie Appleby and the Godolphin team, overcoming a troubled passage to win the Group 3 Tattersalls Stakes (Registered as the Somerville Tattersall Stakes) with a degree of authority. Sophie Able, General Manager of Newmarket Racecourses, said: “The Cambridgeshire Meeting is renowned for its high-quality racing and once again, it has lived up to its billing. “Throughout the three days, we have seen exciting young horses emerge, a QIPCO 2000 Guineas hero regain the winning thread and some of the best jockeys in the world doing battle. “It was capped by a quite remarkable performance by Majestic Dawn in the bet365 Cambridgeshire, adding another rich chapter to a race with so much tremendous history. “Our Group 1 winners, Alcohol Free and Supremacy, look destined for great things in 2021 and I congratulate the connections of those horses, and all our winners here. “My thanks, as always, go to our sponsors across the three days, not only for their support but for working with us during this most challenging of years. “I must also pay tribute to my colleagues here at Newmarket Racecourses and in the wider Jockey Club team, who have pulled together to ensure racing can continue in a safe and secure environment. “I hope everybody who has been following the action from home has enjoyed it and I look forward to a time when we will be able to welcome spectators back to the Home of Horseracing to create more incredible memories together.”

PLAY SMARTER
While this isn’t a one-horse race by any means, there’s little doubt that MIGHTY GURKHA boasts the strongest credentials following his Group 3 success at Kempton. He will prove a tough nut to crack. Stablemate Ocean Star bolted up in a Chepstow maiden last time and she’s no forlorn hope but Fairy Dust, the progressive Gift List and Noorban are more appealing each-way candidates.

BILLESDON BROOK Winner of seven races from 25 starts and over ÂŁ750,000 in prize money, Billesdon Brook's career has been one of racing's feel-good stories. The second foal out of Manduro mare Coplow to hit the track, Billesdon Brook comes from the fifth crop of horses sired by Champs Elysees, a brother to fellow star sire Dansili. Sent into training with Richard Hannon, she took four goes to get off the mark as a juvenile, finally getting her first win with a demolition six length win at Kempton Park. Juvenile consistency followed, with a close third in a Listed race followed by consecutive wins at Goodwood, in handicap and Group 3 company. Her finest hour came in the QIPCO 1,000 Guineas, the first Classic for fillies over a mile on the Rowley Course. Her starting price of 66/1 was a result of a seemingly disappointing run in the Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes over seven furlongs, a key prep race for the QIPCO 1,000 Guineas. Billesdon Brook took a considerable step forward for that prep run, showing her class in the Guineas to see off a very talented field by a length and three quarters. She had the likes of Laurens, Happily, Wild Illusion and I Can Fly in behind, all of which had shown themselves to be extremely talented fillies. There was no fluke about her win, despite her odds, and Billesdon Brook has shown herself to be a very classy filly indeed. While she couldn't win again as a three-year-old, she was handed tough tasks and got back on track as a four-year-old, winning a Listed race at Chelmsford City and a Group 3 at Goodwood. Another great moment came in last year's Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes, today's feature race. Again discounted by the market, she belied odds of 16/1 to add another Group 1 to her already illustrious CV, seeing off Veracious by a length and a half with subsequent Breeders' Cup winner Iridessa back in third. She continued her fine record at Newmarket this season, albeit on the July Course, when only going down by a neck to Nazeef in the Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes back in July.

Billesdon Brook enhanced her course and distance record to make it two wins from three runs over the mile at the Rowley Course when winning this in good style last year. A relative outsider, despite her win in the QIPCO 1,000 Guineas a year previously, she saw off a strong field of talented fillies to win by a length and a half. She had Guineas winner Hermosa well behind, with Falmouth winner Veracious back in second and subsequent Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf heroine Iridessa back in second. Another classy field contests the race today. The French have a great record in this race. The challenge from across the Channel comes from the Henri-Alex Pantall-trained Half Light this year.

PLAY SMARTER
A well up-to-scratch renewal of this Group 1 contest, which can go the way of TEREBELLUM. John Gosden’s filly probably wasn’t suited by making the running when third in the Falmouth and, with a strong pace likely this time, she is taken to reverse the placings with Nazeef and Billesdon Brook. Champers Elysees has been a revelation this season and is next best ahead of her Matron victim Peaceful.

There could be more to come from URBAN ARTIST, who powered clear of Ice Sprite on her handicap debut at Goodwood and an 8lb rise looks manageable. The consistent Inclyne will appreciate returning to this trip and she looks dangerous, while Hyanna hasn’t done much wrong this season and should again make her presence felt.
