SUMMER SATURDAY SATURDAY 31 JULY 2021 Official Racecard £3.50
THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU Welcome to the July Course A warm welcome to the July Course for a summer's afternoon of racing in this beautiful setting. The highlight of our seven races this afternoon is the Listed British Stallion Studs EBF Chalice Stakes (2.45), which is for fillies and mares aged three years or older and features some beautifully bred, high-class horses. This race, like our opening British Stallion Studs EBF Fillies' Novice Stakes, is sponsored by the European Breeders Fund, who provide enhanced prize money for over 600 flat races each year. We would like to thank Maritime Cargo and European Bloodstock News for their race sponsorships and extend our gratitude to Al Basti Equiworld Dubai, for their sponsorship of our Owners’ and Trainers’ facility. Today we remember the lives of Patti Crook, Joyce Rose and Charlie Guest with two races in their names, the Patti Crook Memorial Handicap (3.20) and the Joyce Rose And Charlie Guest Memorial Handicap (3.55). And we celebrate a special occasion for the Harvisons, with the Bob And Liz 40th Wedding Anniversary Handicap at 4.30. Part of a day at the races is enjoying some food and drink with friends and family and we have a wide selection of food outlets and bars to suit every taste. If you would like to enhance your experience, our Mozart's bistro is open for walk-ins on the day and offers a delicious and broad ranging menu. We are delighted to be able to welcome spectators back without restrictions on capacity, but we would ask all attendees this afternoon to read the advice later in this racecard which explains what we can all do to follow the current government guidance whilst on course. I wish all the horses and their connections the best of luck and hope that you all have a wonderful afternoon with us here at Newmarket. Best wishes, SOPHIE ABLE General Manager of Newmarket Racecourses
DON’T FORGET OUR NEXT MEETING - FRIDAY 6TH AUGUST JESS GLYNNE Jess Glynne will be performing live after evening racing. With two Number 1 albums and seven UK Number 1 singles under her belt, expect to hear all your favourite hits! Tickets available now.

Dubai 2020 will be long remembered as the one of the most difficult years that our generation will have ever faced. Covid-19 has brought many challenges to everyday personal and business life. The Thoroughbred Racing Community across the globe have had to make many tough decisions to keep racing going albeit behind closed doors. As racecourses across the UK start to welcome a limited number of people back to their tracks, we would like to congratulate Sophie and her team at Newmarket Racecourse, The Home of British Racing, on their efforts and determination to bring back spectators. We know it isn’t the same as before but we look forward very much to returning to the track in numbers to enjoy the sport we all love. Good luck to all and stay safe. Malih L Al Basti Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai.

THE PATTI CROOK MEMORIAL HANDICAP
Patti was an exceptional character, a real one off a little bit like marmite. She never suffered fools lightly, I first met Patti in a pub in Hertford Heath introduced by my good friend Pippa. Her first words to me was F “a ducky who the hell are you? I instantly liked her, she never mixed her words she either liked you or didn’t. Patti instantly got involved in a syndicate with my stable not only did she became a wonderful owner but a great friend. She gave generously to racing charities and a big supporter of the Injured Jockeys Fund. She worked several years on the board of the Leger Legends raising money. We had many winners and travelled the world together. From the Melbourne Cup to Sweden and she became a well-known character in Deauville where she met her crush Omar Sharif, this was the only time I saw her “lost for words”. We had many winners together, fortunately her last visit to Windsor races, Mukha Magic won for her, where she flew round the racetrack in a wheelchair knocking people over! Her favourite racetrack was always the July Course, Newmarket where we celebrate her life today, no doubt she’s looking down on us with a cigarette in one hand and a class champagne in the other! So here’s cheers to you Patti we loved you lots and miss your dry sense of humour!

WHEN NEWMARKET RACEHORSE TRAINERS OPEN THEIR DOORS TO CELEBRATE THE LIFE OF SIR HENRY CECIL AND TO RAISE MONEY FOR LOCAL CHARITIES
VISIT: THEHENRYCECILOPENWEEKEND.CO.UK
JOYCE AND CHARLIE GUEST The sixth race on the card today is The Joyce and Charlie Guest Memorial Handicap Stakes. Brought together by a love of horses and racing they married in 1949 when they were aged 18 and 21 respectively. In those days Charlie, like his brothers Joey and Nelson was a National Hunt jockey who also rode on the Flat. Joyce rode from an early age and was one of the first generation of women to work with racehorses. Apparently being the first ever girl to canter up Cleeve Hill aged 14. They had six children Rae, Rita, Jane, Joanne, Sally and Richard, with 15 years and one day between the eldest and youngest. Sadly, Joyce died far too young aged 48 in 1980. She would have greatly enjoyed seeing what her children achieved - I think you can safely say she did an amazing job bringing them up. Although she died over 40 years ago she is still remembered with great affection and regard by all her relatives who are here today to celebrate both her and Charlie’s lives. Charlie and Joyce came to Newmarket from the Andover area in the 1970’s to help Joyce’s father run Moreton Stud. Joyce eventually went on to run The Subscription Rooms in the High Street with Joanne. After she died Charlie moved to Holland where he trained a Triple Crown winner ridden by Rae (see the Dutch Derby picture below with a young Richard leading up). Charlie enjoyed a rich and colourful life and although he lived until aged 92 he always remained young at heart. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren and took immense pleasure in following their careers, both in and out of racing. Charlie died earlier this year and was given a lovely Service which could only be attended by a limited number of people. So his children are delighted that some of the girls from the pantry, his carers from Mildenhall Lodge and a large number of his family are able to join them today.

The Racecourse would be grateful if you would observe all Health & Safety requirements whilst you are at Newmarket Racecourses. The emergency exits from the bars onto the grandstand steppings are painted yellow and we would request that you do not stop whilst in this area. We would also request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing ramp and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting on to the actual racecourse. We would also like to remind racegoers that the first aid room is located adjacent to the main Premier Enclosure Entrance (Rowley Mile) or Premier Entrance 2 (July Course).
Racehorse & Jockey Welfare
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials are here to ensure that the racecourse delivers those standards. In addition Newmarket Racecourses employs two veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey.
If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
Photography
Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the racecourse enclosures. Photography is not permitted in any other area without the permission of the Head of Racing. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication. Racegoers are reminded that flash photography is not permitted as the flash can alarm horses and may endanger horses, jockeys and public.
