Newmarket Racecard - Saturday 5th October

Virgin Bet Raceday Preview

13:30 - British EBF Premier Fillies’ Handicap

Six of the last eight winners of this race have been 3-year-olds, Min Huna will be popular after a comfortable 2 length victory at Sandown last time, she faces softer ground for the first time here so preference is for the David Menuisier trained Ashariba, although up in class, she is improving with every run and soft ground will suit.

14:05 - Tattersalls October Auction Stakes

A big field for the 2-year-old Tattersalls Auction Stakes, the one that stands out here is Twafeeg trained by Archie Watson and ridden by Hollie Doyle, she won first time out at Doncaster beating Arabian Dusk by 1 ½ lengths. Arabian Dusk went on to win Group 2 Duchess of Cambridge Stakes at Newmarket and has been running respectably in Group 1 races. Twafeeg’s second run was in the Albany at Royal Ascot, she was slowly away and met a bit of trouble in running but finished a very respectable seventh. The fact that her SP that day was 8/1 shows how highly she is regarded, and she can go very close here today.

14:40 - Virgin Bet Sun Chariot Stakes

Last year’s impressive winner Inspiral is sure to be popular, but she doesn’t come into the race in the same form as last year and with the soft ground comes a question mark, preference is for Tamfana. Tamfana looked an unlucky loser in the 1000 Guineas earlier in the season and she ran well upped in trip in two French Group 1 races. Last time out at Sandown she was dropped in class and back to today’s distance and won impressively The soft ground today will be no issue, and a big performance is expected.

15:15 British Stallion Studs EBF Premier Fillies’ Handicap

A competitive handicap for Fillies and a wide-open affair where you could make a case for a few runners. Chorus looks like a decent each way bet off a mark of 83. Ran very well at Newmarket last time, keeping on well and finishing 3rd when Fav that day over 1m2f We think this 1m4f will suit in what promises to be a strongly run race. The softer conditions shouldn’t be an issue.

15:50 - Virgin Bet Every Saturday Money Back EBF Maiden Stakes

A few interesting newcomers in this race but the selection is Cape Breton, this son of Frankel was sent off 2/1 on debut in what looks like s strong race, the winner of that race, Law of Design was considered good enough to run in the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes on his next start and the second from that race bolted up in a Maiden at Newcastle Cape Breton looked very green in that race and looks sure to take a big step forward here.

16:25 - Virgin Bet Best Odds Daily Maiden Stakes

The horses with experience here look limited so it could pay to side with a newcomer Secret Theory will be a popular selection here for Charlie Appleby and William Buick, he was withdrawn on his intended racecourse debut due to unsuitable soft ground, with the ground soft again today he is passed over with preference for the other Godolphin runner in the race Palmarian.

17:00 - Virgin Bet Daily Price Boosts Fillies’ Handicap

The one that catches our eye in this class 3 Fillies Handicap, and making her handicap debut is the William Haggas trained The Eyes Have it. Only 3 runs winning her 1st race at Yarmouth by 6 lengths in July and lightly raced since. The handicapper has put her on a fair mark of 84 and a good jockey booked in William Buick, this unexposed filly has plenty of potential now on the handicap route. The going remains a question, but if the filly can handle underfoot conditions, she should run a big race

The Jockey Club would like to thank our Group Partners for their support in 2024

As a leading distributor of horse feed, bedding and supplements in the greater GCC area, I am once again immensely proud to support the Jockey Club at Newmarket Racecourses for the 2024 season. Newmarket is credited as being where thoroughbred racing first started which is why so many from every corner of the world assemble and appreciate The Rowley Mile and The July Course.

As ever, the enthusiasm of Sophie Able and her team at Newmarket translates into a top class service for Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and Stable Staff and for that we are deeply grateful.

I would like to wish all those visiting Newmarket throughout the 2024 season, the very best of luck.

Have a wonderful day at the races today.

MAY ENCOUNTER: Following its run on 24/7/2024 it was reported that the horse hung right-handed.

Probable S.P’s: 9-2 Brighton Boy (IRE), 5-1 Twafeeg (IRE), 6-1 Afentiko (IRE), 9-1 The Dragon King (IRE), 14-1 Morte Point (GB), 16-1 Aubergine (IRE), 20-1 King of Angels (IRE), 22-1 May Encounter (GB), 25-1 Fleetwater (GB), 33-1 Shining Pearl (GB), 40-1 Invincible Annice (IRE), Kylie of Lochalsh (IRE), 50-1 Spirited Dancer (GB), Queen of Good News (GB), Ruby’s Profit (IRE), Forager (GB), 66-1 Zoulu Warrior (IRE), Diomed Duke (GB), 100-1 Lilly’s Bet (GB), 200-1 RinkyTinkyTinky (GB)

Several of these are closely matched on these terms but BRIGHTON BOY looks the solid option as he’s proven on the ground and has plenty of experience for a race like this. Twafeeg hasn’t been seen since a respectable run in the Albany and is potentially a big threat, while Fleetwater and Morte Point make each-way appeal at bigger odds.

Probable S.P’s: 5-2 Inspiral (GB), 7-2 Nashwa (GB), Tamfana (GER), 9-2 See The Fire (GB), 10-1 Elmalka (GB), 40-1 Darnation (IRE)

This isn’t an easy race to assess but the Gosden-trained 5-y-os NASHWA and Inspiral do have the slight edge on form over the 3-y-os. Inspiral was very impressive in this a year ago but hasn’t looked quite the same mare this term, so the versatile Nashwa is just preferred on her return to action. Sea The Fire could be the pick of the Classic generation.

Cases can be made for plenty, but MERESIDE DIVA was value for some additional credit given her position in a modestly-run affair when runner-up at Ayr a fortnight ago so is fancied to register a third success of the campaign at the expense of Raheena, who is a filly firmly on the up and arrives in search of a hat-trick. Testing conditions won’t hinder Princess Alex, so she’s marginally preferred to The Eyes Have It for third spot.

The Great British Bonus (GBB) offers multiple bonuses of up to £20,000 per eligible race for British-bred fillies and mares.
