WELCOME TO

ItiswithimmensepleasurethatIwelcomeyoubacktoNewmarketRacecourses, the illustrious Home of Horse Racing.

Today marks the exciting commencement of our 2025 season, where you can anticipate 36 unforgettable days filled with world-class racing, entertainment, and community celebration. At this time of year, Newmarket truly comes alive, as the hopes and dreams of the many talented horses trained in our town ignite, drawing us all closer to the first classic races on the horizon.

We kick off this season with the much-anticipated three-day bet365 Craven Meeting here at the Rowley Mile This opening day holds special significance for all of us, and we’re thrilled to welcome each of you back through our doors to share in the excitement.

I would like to take a moment to extend our heartfelt thanks to bet365 for their generous sponsorship of this meeting. As the world’s largest online betting company, their enduring support for Newmarket Racecourses has been invaluable, and we look forward to nurturing our strong ties for many years to come

Our gratitude also goes out to the European Breeders Fund, Lanwades Stud, and Weatherbys for their sponsorship of today’s racecard Additionally, I’m excited to acknowledge Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai, for their continued support of the Owners and Trainers facilities across both of our courses. They are also launching a leaderboard for leading owner and leading trainer this season, starting from the bet365 Craven Meeting and culminating on our final raceday on November 1st. Stay tuned for exciting prizes to be announced soon!

Today’s feature race is the prestigious Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes, a crucial trial for the upcoming Betfred 1000 Guineas, which will grace the Rowley Mile on Sunday, May 4th. This year’s renewal boasts a talented lineup of promising fillies, and I eagerly anticipate seeing which of them may etch their name into racing history this spring and beyond. A standout from this race in recent years was Cachet, owned by Highclere Thoroughbreds and trained by George Boughey, who went on to clinch victory in the Betfred 1000 Guineas just two weeks after her triumph here

We are also delighted to welcome the ITV Racing team, who are here today to bring the day’s action to racing fans across the country. We look forward to collaborating with them throughout the season to showcase our events

Asyouimmerseyourselvesintoday’sfestivities,wehopeyouhaveanextraordinaryexperience.

We’re excited to see many of you return throughout the season, and we wish all participants and visitors a successful and rewarding year Plans for 2025 are well underway across both of our wonderful racecourses, including immersive Summer Saturdays with new and exciting themes & Newmarket Nights featuring world class artists!

Let’s make this Day 1 a remarkable kickoff to an incredible 2025 season!

The Jockey Club would like to thank our Group Partners for their support in 2025

As a leading distributor of horse feed, bedding and supplements in the greater GCC area, I am once again immensely proud to support the Jockey Club at Newmarket Racecourses for the 2025 season. Newmarket is credited as being where thoroughbred racing first started which is why so many from every corner of the world Mile Rowley The appreciate and assemble and The July Course.

As ever, the enthusiasm of Sophie Able and her team at Newmarket translates into a top class service for Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and Stable Staff and for that we are deeply grateful.

I would like to wish all those visiting Newmarket throughout the 2025 season, the very best of luck.

Have a wonderful day at the races today.

SALLAAL is bred in the purple and belied market weakness with a performance that marked him out as one to follow as a 3-y-o when getting up close home in a Yarmouth novice on his debut back in the autumn, so he earns the vote to maintain his unbeaten record now stepping up in class. LANWADES STUD NELL GWYN STAKES

First run in 1961 as the Spring Fillies’ Stakes, this seven-furlong contest was renamed the Nell Gwyn Stakes the following year in honour of Nell Gwyn (1650-1687). Nell Gwynn was said to be the favourite mistress of King Charles II, who did so much to establish Newmarket as the centre of the world of horseracing.

Since its establishment, the Nell Gwyn Stakes has served as an important trial for the first fillies’ Classic of the season, the 1000 Guineas, which takes place over the full Rowley Mile around two to three weeks’ later.

French raider Flying Waters (1976) became the first filly to win both races and has been followed by One In A Million (1979), Fairy Footsteps (1981), Pebbles (1984), Oh So Sharp (1985), Speciosa (2006) and Cachet (2022)

Of the seven fillies to win both races, the real standout winners are Pebbles and Oh So Sharp, who were both owned by Sheikh Mohammed.

The Clive Brittain-trained Pebbles went on to excel in her four-yearold career with dazzling wins in the Coral-Eclipse and Champion Stakes before becoming the first British-trained winner at the Breeders’ Cup in the USA.

Oh So Sharp was expertly handled by the late Sir Henry Cecil to becometheninthandmostrecentwinneroftheFillies’TripleCrown by following up her success in the 1000 Guineas with victories in the Oaks at Epsom Downs and in the St Leger at Doncaster

DECLARED RUNNERS 5

2024: KALPANA 3 8 11 Ryan Moore 11-2 (Andrew Balding) 9 ran

Probable S.P’s: 15-8 Treasure Fleet (GB), 9-4 Lady Chartwell (IRE), 9-2 Brindavan (IRE), 7-1 The Trickster (FR), 12-1 Hallelujah U (GB)

LADY CHARTWELL did the job well when making a winning reappearance at Chelmsford and, with a 6lb rise for that decisive success by no means excessive, she is likely to prove a tough nut to crack with Ryan Moore booked. The unbeaten Treasure Fleet brings clear potential to this handicap debut and is feared most ahead ofBrindavan, whileTheTricksterand Hallelujah should both win more races but their claims are not as appealing as the other three. TIMEFORM PREDICTION: 1.LADY CHARTWELL (IRE) 2.TREASURE FLEET 3.BRINDAVAN (IRE)
