Today’s highlight is the illustrious bet365 Craven Stakes, a pivotal race for three-year-olds on their journey to claim a spot in the history books of the Betfred 2000 Guineas. This race has proven to be a launching pad for future champions, and anticipation is electric as we await this year’s contenders Last year’s winner, Haatem, not only claimed victory here but also shone brightly placing in both the Betfred 2000 Guineas and the Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas—an extraordinary feat achieved in swift succession under the expert guidance of trainer Richard Hannon.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to bet365, the world’s leading online bookmaker, for their continued and generous sponsorship throughout the Craven meeting. We would also like to extend our gratitude to the European Breeders Fund, Blandford Bloodstock, and Rossdales for their invaluable support across the card. Additionally, we’re excited to announce that Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai will be hosting a leaderboard for leading owner and leading trainer throughout the season, kicking off at the bet365 Craven meeting and continuing until the final races on November 1st.

The Jockey Club would like to thank our Group Partners for their support in 2025

As a leading distributor of horse feed, bedding and supplements in the greater GCC area, I am once again immensely proud to support the Jockey Club at Newmarket Racecourses for the 2025 season. Newmarket is credited as being where thoroughbred racing first started which is why so many from every corner of the world Mile Rowley The appreciate and assemble and The July Course.

As ever, the enthusiasm of Sophie Able and her team at Newmarket translates into a top class service for Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and Stable Staff and for that we are deeply grateful.

I would like to wish all those visiting Newmarket throughout the 2025 season, the very best of luck.

Have a wonderful day at the races today.

DECLARED RUNNERS 7 2024: WASHINGTON HEIGHTS 4 9 9 Tom Eaves 33-1 (Kevin Ryan) 14 ran Blinkers worn by No 3. Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn by No 5. Stewards Note: RUN TO FREEDOM: Following its run on 18/4/2024 it was reported that the horse was slowly into stride. Probable S.P’s: 7-4 Romantic Style (IRE), 5-1 Sajir (IRE), 15-2 Lethal Levi (GB), Royal Zabeel (IRE), 8-1 Apollo One (GB), 9-1 Run To Freedom (GB), 22-1 Grand Grey (IRE)

Charlie Appleby’s ROMANTIC STYLE looked well suited by reverting to a sprint distance when scoring impressively at Meydan in the winter and this smart filly can add to an earlier C&D victory here. The most likeable Apollo One could emerge as the main danger given he goes well fresh, although the thriving Royal Zabeel and Ayr Gold Cup victor Lethal Levi can also have a say in a cracking Abernant.

THE bet365 CRAVEN STAKES

The Craven Stakes is named in honour of William Craven, 6th Baron Craven (1738-1791), an early member of The Jockey Club. His support for racing at Newmarket led to the establishment of the Craven Meeting in 1771.

Originally the Craven Stakes was Newmarket’s first race of the season – an all-aged affair staged on a Monday in April and run over a distance “from the ditch to the turn of the lands” Among the winners of that early version of the race was Potoooooooo (1782), who went on to become a highly influential stallion. Often shortened to Pot8os, he was named from when a stable lad was asked to put “Potatoes” on his stable door but misspelled it Potoooooooo. It amused his owner-breeder, the Earl of Abingdon, who kept the name!

It was not until 1878 that the race took on its current form of being a mile event for three-year-olds. Since that time, the Craven Stakes developed into a trial for the first Classic of the season, the 2000 Guineas, which takes place over the same course and distance around two to three weeks’ later. Scot Free (1884) became the first horse to win both races while others to complete the double in the early years included Slieve Gallion (1907), Neil Gow (1910), Kennymore (1914) and Colombo (1934)

Since World War II a further six colts have completed the double – My Babu (1948), Shadeed (1985), Dancing Brave (1986), Doyoun (1988), Tirol (1990) and Haafhd (2004)

In recent times, the Craven Stakes has been a favourite of Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby, who has trained three of the latest six winners. The Newmarket-based Appleby’s winners were subsequent Derby hero Masar (2018), future Breeders’ Cup Mile scorer Master Of The Seas (2021) and Native Trail (2022), who was runner-up in the 2000 Guineas before going on to success in the Irish version at the Curragh.

DECLARED RUNNERS 8 2024: POET MASTER (IRE) 4 9 5 Sam James 10-3 (K R Burke) 15 ran Blinkers worn by No 7. Visor worn by No 6. Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn by No 3. Stewards Note: TEN POUNDS: Following its run on 15/9/2024 it was reported that the horse hung left-handed.

ProbableS.P’s: 11-4Ten Pounds (IRE), 4-1 Fifty Nifty (IRE), 6-1 Stanage (GB), 8-1 Gorak (FR), 17-2 Fahrenheit Seven (GB), 11-1 Miss Information (IRE), 14-1 Jumby (IRE), 20-1 Darkness (FR)

The rain-softened ground probably didn’t help TEN POUNDS at Doncaster when last seen in September and, having looked progressive prior to that, he remains of strong interest, particularly now back on a faster surface (his Leicester win last July was on good to firm) He may have most to fear from another low-mileage 4-y-o in Fifty Nifty, while Gorak, who wasn’t beaten far in this off a higher mark last year, and Stanage are others with appealing claims.
