ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHARE HOLDERS AND STAFF, I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU FOR OUR SECOND FIXTURE OF THE SEASON WITH A SEVEN RACE COMPETITIVE CARD ALBEIT WE WOULD HAVE LIKED SOME MORE RUNNERS IN THE FOURTH AND SIXTH RACES.

I would like to thank all the Owners with us today and those that will be at home watching on Sky Sports Channel 415 for entering their horses. I have sent you all a digital racecard through Weatherbys which you should have received. A copy of the digital racecard has been sent to the ROA team to publish on their website. I would like to thank all our sponsors today: TRP The Racing Partnership, Sky Sports Racing and William Hill. Our meeting on Easter Saturday was all about the retirements of both Mark Grant and Richard Johnson. All of us associated with Newton Abbot wish you both a very happy and successful retirement. You both have been a huge credit to the racing industry, and we will miss you riding around Newton Abbot. The past 13 months have been extremely difficult for everyone in the country and most businesses. All racecourses have their own stories to tell and Newton Abbot Racecourse is no different. Last season when we were about to start racing Covid-19 raised its ugly head, this meant losing eight meetings. Jump racing started a month later than the flat on 1st July. Newton Abbot started on the 7th July and we managed 10 meetings all behind closed doors and therefore no crowds, no hospitality and no happy faces. A huge effort was made behind the scenes to get the course compliant with Covid regulations. The weighing room was moved to the betting hall. Owners when allowed were moved upstairs in the Paddock Suite. Move forward to April 2021 and we have hope with the roll out of vaccines. However, from a business point of view, we have racing back but no crowds, no in-house catering, and little income. The four point plan to get back to normal will for almost all racecourses rely on the removal of the 2m distancing rule. We are planning for crowds and smiling faces, but there remains a nervousness. Once again, I thank all the Owners that supported Newton Abbot last year and the start of this season. We hope that continues this year. We certainly hope at some point soon that we can all get back to normal operations as safely as possible. Very best wishes, PATRICK MASTERSON MANAGING DIRECTOR

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

You must be 18 or over to place a bet You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

LAST MEETING REVIEW | SATURDAY 3RD APRIL 2021

1

The 2021 season here at Newton Abbot began with a bang, with a superb, well-subscribed eightrace card. But it was perhaps not the racing itself that made the real headlines. Easter Saturday was, in fact, to be the last hurrah for four-time Champion jockey, Richard Johnson, who announced his retirement from the saddle following his third place on Brother Tedd in the newtonabbotracing.com Handicap Chase. After 3,819 winners, 204 of which coming at Newton Abbot, the 43-year-old called it a day after a ride for his staunchest supporter over the years, westcountry trainer Philip Hobbs. We wish him a very happy retirement.

4

Unwittingly, another stalwart of the weighing room, Mark Grant, also chose the same race to 6 announce his retirement from the saddle. A 23-year riding career, with a Cheltenham win on the horse he rode to sixth place here, Count Meribel, perhaps the highlight, Grant will now dedicate himself to his pre-training business and we wish him the greatest of success in his next career. The race itself was taken by Eritage in excellent style, making all in the hands of Harry Cobden and surviving a mistake at the last to secure a five and a half length victory.

newtonabbotracing.com

It was actually the second winner on the card for trainer Paul Nicholls as he’d already taken the opening contest on the card thanks to the smart Hell Red, who also made all, this time in the Racing Partnership Novices’ Hurdle. Six lengths was the winning margin at the line from stablemate Celestial Force.

5

The South West Racing Club Handicap Hurdle went the way of the Kerry Leetrained Orchard Grove, who was produced right on time by Richard Patrick, jumping to lead over the last and staying on well to repel Colin Tizzard’s Floy Joy by a length and a half. Dorking Boy ran out a comfortable winner of the first division of the Sky Sports Racing On Sky 415 ‘National Hunt’ Maiden Hurdle, as his odds of 2/7F suggested. The Gary Mooretrained six-year-old kept it simple on the front end and was never challenged under Jamie Moore, recording a blood8

7

less three-length victory. Division two went to Harry Fry and his six-year-old Our Surprise, who was perhaps the most impressive winner on the card, making all in the hands of Daryl Jacob and bolting up by almost ten lengths. He could well be a horse to follow in the coming months. Two and a half miles was the trip for the Racing Welfare Novices’ Handicap Chase and it was the Sophie Leechtrained Old Harry Rocks who took the spoils under Lorcan WIlliams, holding off Jimmy Frost’s Treacys Jim in the closing stages. Leech and Williams were just denied a quickfire double as Milrow was held by the Nick Williams-trained Aimee De Sivola in the Fudge Bassett Memorial Handicap Hurdle - a race dedicated to a much loved local figure. Harry Cobden chalked up his treble on the card with an excellent ride to help the top weight defy her welter burden. Closing out what was an excellent opening day of our season, Game Line mowed down Hedgeinator in the closing stages of the Newton Abbot Racecourse Handicap Chase over three miles and two furlongs, giving Peter and Sean Bowen a family success on the card.
