ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF, I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU BACK TO NEWTON ABBOT FOR OUR NINTH FIXTURE OF THE 2021 SEASON.

We have on offer £58,872 with eight competitive races this evening. I would like to thank all the Owners with us today and those that will be at home watching on Sky Sports Channel 415 for running their horses. I have sent you all a digital racecard via Weatherby’s which you should have received. We continue to give 3 badges for the Owners, this has been agreed in line with the latest Government guidelines and with the Safety Advisory Group and the local Environmental Health Officer. I would like to thank all our sponsors today: St Austell Brewery, TRP The Racing Partnership, The family of Emily Davies for her 21st birthday, William Hill, Sky Sports Racing and Attheraces. The past 13 months have been extremely difficult for everyone in the country and most businesses. All racecourses have their own stories to tell and Newton Abbot Racecourse is no different. Last season when we were about to start racing Covid-19 raised its ugly head, this meant losing eight meetings. Jump racing started a month later than the flat on 1 July. Newton Abbot started on 7 July and we managed 10 meetings all behind closed doors and therefore no crowds, no hospitality and no happy faces. A huge effort was made behind the scenes to get the course compliant with Covid regulations. The weighing room was moved to the betting hall. Owners when allowed were moved upstairs in the Paddock Suite. Move forward to April 2021 and we have hope with the roll out of vaccines. However, from a business point of view, we have racing back but no crowds, no in-house catering, and little income. The four point plan to get back to normal will for almost all racecourse rely on the removal of the 2m distancing rule. We are planning for crowds and smiling faces, but there remains a nervousness. I continue to talk with the Safety Advisory Group and the Environmental Health Officer regarding the possibility of crowds returning in larger numbers, but it has been agreed that the meetings 2 & 12 & 18 & 26 July we will continue to have a small crowd of 500. The meeting on 26 July could however be a normal meeting depending on what the Government say on 19 July. Once again, I thank all the Owners that supported Newton Abbot last season and we hope that continues this year. We certainly hope at some point soon that we can all get back to normal operations as safely as possible. Please enjoy the racing this evening. Best wishes

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

LAST MEETING REVIEW |TUESDAY 22ND JUNE 2021

3

With another action-packed day of racing ahead of us, last Tuesday we held an evening meeting with the top leading trainer and jockey landing the feature race with Darling Maltaix. . Just the 4-runners went to post for the 2m5f Get Daily Tips On attheraces.com Handicap Chase which saw connections of Darling Maltaix win a handy prize of £6,107.76. The Paul Nicholls-trained horse went off a 7/4F, ridden by Harry Cobden, looked sharp over the 16 fences he took. The 8-year-old ran home a readily winner in what looked an open contest on paper to win by 2¼ lengths over the Suzy Smith-trained Pilbara who finished in second. Gavin Sheehan kicked off the evening with a success when teaming up with Sue Gardner in the Racing Partnership TRP Novices’ Handicap Hurdle over 2m2½f. A nice confident ride from Gavin Sheehan in the opener, as he held up Alramz, but began to make headway through the field 5 out. He sill looked to still be travelling strongly 3 out and albeit drifting right on the run in, this gelding got off the mark at the 7th time of

4

asking to win going away by 4 ½ lengths. Gavin Sheehan completed a quick-fire double and could not ask for a better start to the 5 evening, as Delight Of Dubai won well as joint favourite in the Racing Partnership TRP Handicap Chase over 2m5f. Despite jumping right at some of her fences, this mare got up to win at the fifth time of asking over fences, after going close on her last 3 appearances (finishing third, second and third), it was only a matter of time before she got her head in front. The 3/1 shot led after 2 out and was gifted the race at the final fence when Vocaliser made an error at the last and wasn’t able to recover in time on the run-in.

newtonabbotracing.com

DARLING MALTAIX won our class 3 handicap chase

It turned out to be an excellent start to the evening for favourite backers as Kilmington Cross also landed the short odds of 10/11 and backed up her success here from the 11th June. This mare is clearly a handicapper heading in the right direction as she completed her hat-trick in the newtonabbotracing.com Novices’ Hurdle over 2m5½f and although the step up in trip was her main concern, she gave it another bold front-running display to make all by 3¼ lengths. She remains on a mark of 120 so could go in again next time out too and clearly likes it around here. Another success for Paul Nicholls on the evening came in the Janet Denning Fifehead Farms Memorial Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle and this was by far the easiest success on the card. Ben Bromley, claiming 7lb, gave Chez Hans a beautiful ride, tracking the leaders throughout, to come home a readily winner by 11 lengths. I bet everyone on the night was gutted about the 11/4 price after seeing such a wonderful performance by the young jockey.

Hurdle over 3m2½f as Gavin Sheehan completed a hat-trick on the night. Drumlee Watar returned to action in good style on his first run back from a wind operation and was always kept handy by his jockey throughout. The Warren Greatrex-trained gelding went clear two hurdles out and stayed on strongly to the line, to bolt home by 11 lengths and land the 5/2 odds which again looked a very fair price. And to conclude an excellent evening of racing here at Newton Abbot, we had the Tich Cleave Ladies Man Classic Novices’ Handicap Chase over 3m2f. Sean Bowen made sure he got the job completed on the short-priced Kingston King, who went off at 4/6, and it really was a great night for punters who backed the favourites. David Rees’ in-mate disputed the lead throughout and albeit not fluent at the 6th and 15th fence, he went clear after 3 out. Despite making a final error at the last, he stayed on gamely to win by 3¼ lengths and he will no doubt be winning again.

The penultimate race saw another winning favourite in the St Austell Brewery Handicap

PLAY SMARTER

BALLYEGAN HERO bolted up over C&D 11 days ago and makes obvious appeal in his bid to follow up under a penalty. Friends Don’t Ask looks the main danger, but market support for Danboru would look significant.
