ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF, I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU BACK TO NEWTON ABBOT FOR OUR TENTH FIXTURE OF THE 2021 SEASON.
We have on offer £49,759 with seven competitive races this afternoon. I would like to thank all the Owners with us today and those that will be at home watching on Sky Sports Channel 415 for running their horses. I have sent you all a digital racecard via Weatherby’s which you should have received yesterday. We remain having the number of badges for the Owners to 3, this has been agreed in line with the latest Government guidelines and with the Safety Advisory Group and the local Environmental Health Officer. A copy of the digital racecard has been sent to the ROA and hopefully posted on their website. I would like to thank all our sponsors today: St Austell Brewery, TRP The Racing Partnership, William Hill, Talk Tidy Marketing, Sky Sports Racing and Attheraces. The past 15 months have been extremely difficult for everyone in the country and most businesses. All racecourses have their own stories to tell and Newton Abbot Racecourse is no different. Last season when we were about to start racing Covid-19 raised its ugly head, this meant losing eight meetings. Jump racing started a month later than the flat on 1 July. Newton Abbot started on 7 July and we managed 10 meetings all behind closed doors and therefore no crowds, no hospitality and no happy faces. A huge effort was made behind the scenes to get the course compliant with Covid regulations. The weighing room was moved to the betting hall. Owners when allowed were moved upstairs in the Paddock Suite. Move forward to April 2021 and we have hope with the roll out of vaccines. However, from a business point of view, we have racing back but no crowds, no in-house catering, and little income. The four point plan to get back to normal will for almost all racecourse rely on the removal of the 2m distancing rule. We are planning for crowds and smiling faces, but there remains a nervousness. Since our last meeting on 2 July I have been in talks with the Safety Advisory Group and the Environmental Health Officer regarding the possibility of getting back to normal following the Governments announcement of getting back to normal. We have agreed that the meeting on 26 July will be the last fixture where we have a limited crowd of 500. We will therefore have a month to reconfigure the racecourse to go back to some sort of normal. The meeting on 21 August will be a normal meeting but still be protecting our Jockey’s. Further news of those protocols we have to adhere to will be shared when we have finalised those. However we will have our facilities back for the general public. Once again, I thank all the Owners that supported Newton Abbot last season and we hope that continues this year. We certainly hope at some point soon that we can all get back to normal operations as safely as possible. Best wishes

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

LAST MEETING REVIEW |FRIDAY 2ND JULY 2021
2
It is often said that racing is a sport of up and downs and we saw a prime example of this at our most recent fixture on 2nd July. Conditional rider Mitchell Bastyan found himself a surprise winner of the Sky Sports Racing On Sky 415 Open National Hunt Flat Race despite the fact that his intended mount, the Milton-Harris trained Aussie Moon was declared a non-runner. But fate was to intervene. On the way to post, the favourite of the three runners, Kubinski unshipped Bryan Carver and racing was delayed whilst he received medical attention on the track. Sadly, he was unable to take the ride but the four-year-old was declared fit to run and Bastyan stepped in as a last-minute jockey change. Kubinski lined up 15-minutes after the scheduled start time and despite the unusual preliminaries won by an impressive five lengths, giving Bastyan his first winner of the season on his first ride for trainer Chris Honour. Scrappy Jack left his rider Jay Tidball speechless when providing him with his first winner under rules in the Racing Partnership TRP Juvenile Hurdle. Having opened on course at 40/1, the
3
Bill Turner-trained runners’ price soon contracted into 22-1 and the three-year-old duly rewarded his backers.
5
There was a glimmer of what was to come when a staying on fourth here in June and he clearly benefited from that experience with an improved performance. After the race, his 20-year-old rider told Sky Sports Racing: “I’m speechless, I can’t believe it’s come. The horse has been great at the yard, I broke him in as a two-year-old. He’s a gutsy little horse and I’m over the moon. Mr Turner has been fantastic to me and if it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here today.”
newtonabbotracing.com
THAT’S A GIVEN winner of The St Austell Brewery Novices’ Handicap Chase Promising conditional Kevin Brogan found himself successful aboard the Adrian Wintle-trained Espinator in the second division of The Emily Davies 21st Birthday Race Handicap Hurdle. Always prominent, Brogan had finished in the placings onboard the horse on the three previous occasions, and Espinator saw off the late challenge of Valentino to win by just over a length. Paul Nicholls continued his fine form by saddling Chez Hans to victory, although it wasn’t all plain sailing for the 1/2 favourite. Ben Bromley had to keep his mount straight over the hurdles on a few occasions from in the saddle and although he was well in handicapping-wise, he had to fight for victory, seeing off the Alexandra Dunn-trained Thahab Ifraj by just under a length. The small yard of trainer Claire Hatch celebrated the success of Every Breakin Wave, who shed his maiden tag at the second time of asking over hurdles under Ben Godfrey. Always in the front pair, the winner made his final push for home three out and kept on well, despite making a slight mistake at the last, and was good value for his half a length win.
That’s A Given was an easy winner of the St Austell Brewery Novices’ Handicap Chase, running out a 12-length victory under Robbie Dunne. The closing stages of the race saw Whiskey Lullaby and Fat Sam drop out of contention and The Bees Knees was left as the winner’s closest challenger. Although he tried to challenge, the winner was too good and saw out the race easily to provide trainer Noel Williams with a win. Paul Nicholls recorded a double on the day with Stanley Stanley, who took division two of The Emily Davies 21st Birthday Race Handicap Hurdle. Harry Cobden kept his mount close to the pace and challenged two out, drawing away over the penultimate hurdle and leaving the field toiling in his wake. He had a good look at the hurdle going to the last but got over it and although running around in the closing stages he won by a length over favourite Lapford Lad. The penultimate race saw the best winner of the day, Martin Smith’s Friends Don’t Ask. He made all under Nick Schofield in the nine-runner field and won nicely, eased down in the end and crossing the line five and a half lengths in front. He maintained a commanding lead throughout the race and his rivals couldn’t challenge, with the 7/2 chance winning in a canter.
