ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF, I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU BACK TO NEWTON ABBOT FOR OUR ELEVENTH FIXTURE OF THE 2021 SEASON.
We have an all hurdle card today, as we have been working on our chase track. Our ground staff together with a couple of contractors have been working this week in very tough conditions. The courses was mowed and baled. Scarification and decompaction relief. Spring harrowed and further scarification and finally direct drilled with 100% rye grass. All credit to the team for their outstanding work. I would like to thank all the Owners with us today and those that will be at home watching on Sky Sports Channel 415 for running their horses. I have sent you all a digital racecard via Weatherbys which you should have received yesterday. We remain having the number of badges for the Owners to 3, this has been agreed in line with the latest Government guidelines and with the Safety Advisory Group and the local Environmental Health Officer. I would like to thank all our sponsors today: The Racing Partnership, Attheraces, St Austell Brewery, Talk Tidy Marketing. Since our meeting on 12 July I have been in talks with the Safety Advisory Group and the Environmental Health Officer regarding the possibility of getting back to normal following the Government’s announcement of getting back to normal. We have agreed that the meeting on 26 July will be the last fixture where we have a limited crowd of 500. We will therefore have a month to reconfigure the racecourse to go back to some sort of normal. The meeting on 21 August will be a normal meeting but still be protecting our Jockeys. Further news of those protocols we have to adhere to, will be shared when we have finalised those. However we will have our facilities back for the general public. Once again, I thank all the Owners that supported Newton Abbot last season and we hope that continues this year. We certainly hope at some point soon that we can all get back to normal operations as safely as possible. Best wishes PATRICK MASTERSON MANAGING DIRECTOR

HOW TO PLACE A BET
HOW DO ‘THE ODDS’ WORK?
If you’re new to horseracing and are daunted by the prospect of placing your first bet, then our guide to betting will help you. WHERE CAN I BET? There are two places to place a bet: the Tote and the Bookmakers. The Tote: Usually placed throughout the course, theTote doesn’t offer a fixed priced for a bet.The money is pooled together and shared between those with a winning ticket. The Bookmakers: Usually located in the front of the ground, Bookmakers display their odds and offer a fixed price. The amount you can win is printed on your betting slip.
HOW MUCH SHOULD I BET? If you are new to betting, start off with smaller bets until you get used to it. Betting between £2 and £5 means that you can enjoy the thrill of betting, without denting your wallet.
The odds are the probability of a particular horse winning the race. Odds against: Horses with less than 50% probability of winning. Displayed as 2/1, 5/1 Odds on: Horses with more than 50% probability of winning. Displayed as 10/11, 4/6 The tote will show its probable prices in decimal format. The Bookmaker’s prices reflect a price for your winnings. ‘Evens’: means your horse has a 50% probability of winning. It looks like 1/1 and you get your stake plus the same amount in winnings back.
HOW TO PICK A WINNER Usually dependent on observation, knowledge and luck, there are some ways of determining the best horse to bet on. The Favourite: The horse judged most likely to win the race, and on which the most money has been bet. Offered at the shortest odds. The Form: The race card will print details of all the runners and riders for each race. The 6 figures at the end of a horse’s name, such as 420131, shows where that horse was placed in its last six races. So, it would have been 4th, 2nd, not placed, 1st, 3rd and 1st. The Jockey: With 500 professional jockeys, some well-known such as Richard Johnson, many bet on their favourite jockeys to win. The Trainers: Trainers are as important as the jockeys. The ‘Racing Post’ will help give more background about the trainers. The Odds: The shorter the odds, the more chance there is of winning. Tips and Tipsters: ‘Abbot Whispers’ will give inside tips and information about the runners and riders. The Going: The state of the ground the horses will be racing on. Dependent on the weather, the going can be heavy, soft, good to soft, good, good to firm or firm.
newtonabbotracing.com
HOW DO I PLACE MY BET? At theTote: Simply say how much, the type of bet and the horse’s number, for example ‘£5 to win on number 4 in the 4.25 race’.The amount you’ll win will only be known after the race has finished but screens will give an approximated amount. At the Bookmakers: You’ll receive a fixed bet which will tell you how much you’ll receive if you win. Again, say how much, the type of bet and the horse’s number. Not all bookmakers accept Each Way bets, so ask before placing. Keep your betting slip safe, and collect from the same bookmakers you made your bet with.
HOW DO I FOLLOW THE RACE? Five minutes before the race starts, find somewhere with a good view and settle in for the race. Look out for your horse; the horse’s number and the jockey’s colours will be printed in the race card.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I WIN? Take your betting slip up to the Tote/ Bookmakers and collect your winnings. They’ll check your betting slip and pay out the amount you’re due to receive. You can also go the Winner’s Enclosure and watch your winner being presented with their prize.
HORSE WELFARE AT NEWTON ABBOT At all race meetings held at Newton Abbot Racecourse there are three specially qualified Veterinary surgeons appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. One vet will attend the start and follow the race in his/her vehicle and attend fallen, lame or pulled up horses. Another vet will observe the finishing straight from the small stand beside the last fence in the final straight. They will immediately attend fallen or lame horses at this last fence or flight of hurdles. If directed, they may be required to attend other incidents in the final straight. The third vet will be available to complete the treatment of urgent cases within the stable yard. This third vet will, if not otherwise occupied, observe the race from the bank at the outside of the track by the ‘in-line’ steward’s box and be available to attend horses finishing the race. In the event of two vets being occupied treating an emergency case, the SVS will follow horses. Whenever possible, one of the Veterinary Surgeons should be present in the Unsaddling Enclosure after each race.
USE OF SCREENS It is now standard practise for screens to be erected around any horses when receiving veterinary attention. This does not reflect the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse a calm environment in which to make a recovery. Please do not therefore assume the worst if you see the screen erected around a fallen horse.

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
You must be 18 or over to place a bet You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

LAST MEETING REVIEW |SUNDAY 18TH JULY 2021 3 - SCRAPPY JACK
2
1
It was a fantastic day at our last meeting for the trainer and jockey combination of Bill Turner and Harry Kimber as they teamed up for a treble on the card, which also included the feature juvenile hurdle race. The newtonabbotracing.com Juvenile Hurdle was the third race of the afternoon and it saw Scrappy Jack make it back-to-back wins over course and distance. Having had one run on the Flat the three-year-old has taken well to hurdling with all three of his races over obstacles coming here at Newton Abbot. He had to carry a penalty for his win at the start of the month but it did not stop him from recording another victory, up against four of the same rivals who he had beaten on the previous occasion. Scrappy Jack confirmed the form with a half a length success, coming home strongly after the last to get up close home. Bill Turner and Harry Kimber had already gotten off the mark for the day in the opening NewtonAbbotRace On Twitter Maiden Hurdle as Oscars Fame
4
opened his account under Rules at the second attempt. The winning pointer had finished third over two 5 miles and five furlongs here on his stable debut and he built on that effort down in trip this time around. The seven-yearold took over the lead two hurdles from home and then he was not for catching, going on to win nicely by five and a half lengths in the end. The treble for Turner and Kimber was completed by Youvebrokenmydream in the fifth race on the card, the Follow @WillHillRacing On Twitter Novices’ Handicap Hurdle.
newtonabbotracing.com
It was a well-judged ride by Kimber as he held up the mare towards the rear of the field before producing the six-year-old to lead at the final flight. Youvebrokenmydream then went on to see off her challengers by a length and a quarter to make it a memorable day for the trainer and jockey. Earlier on the card there was success for Peter and James Bowen as Courtland ran out an impressive winner of the Tribute To The Honourable Mike Bolitho Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase. Sent off as the 5/4 favourite following his win at Ffos Las the previous month, Courtland backed up that performance with a powerful display, keeping on strongly after the last to score by five and a half lengths. In the Happy Birthday Cath King Handicap Chase, Dido enjoyed the step up in trip by trainer Alexandra Dunn to gain his first win over fences at the age of eleven. Over the extra distance he travelled smoothly through the race but Jamie Moore
would have had a nervous moment when the saddle slipped. However, it was not enough to stop Dido and he stayed on to record a three and a quarter length success. Jamie Moore made it a double in the Happy 60th Birthday Gill White Mares’ Handicap Chase as he made all onboard Achy Breaky Heart. Having been last seen over hurdles in April, the seven-year-old was gaining a first win over fences on only his fourth run over the bigger obstacles. He did jump to his right during the contest but he showed a good attitude to see off his rivals and go on to win by two lengths for trainer Milton Harris. In the closing Racing Partnership Handicap Hurdle, Milton Harris ended the day on a high as he made it a second win in a row courtesy of Presenting Yeats. The five-year-old was up to three miles and two furlongs for the first time but he had no trouble with stamina under James Best, always doing enough to make it a first win over hurdles by two and a quarter lengths.
