KEITH CURLE
Northampton Town manager Keith Curle says the squad want to reward the amount of hard work that has gone in to taking part in the play-offs from many different people at the club.
"The players and coaching staff are the focal point and the part of the club who most people see but we are very appreciative of the support the club gives us, allowing us the platform to go and do our jobs."
From protocols to testing, PPE and more, a huge club wide effort has given the manager, his staff and the players the platform to take part in these play-offs, and Curle is hoping the efforts of all concerned will be rewarded.
Curle also says the spirit in the squad is good as they prepare for Monday's play-off final with Exeter City at Wembley.
"A lot of hard work has gone into both taking part in the play-offs and the season as a whole from everyone," he said.
"Within that there is a focus and a desire to get the job done. The players enjoy their time together but when we get on the training pitch it is time to switch work mode on and we do that well.
"We are really lucky. The staff here have received many documents about these play-offs that run to pages and pages of protocols and regulations but they work their way through them and then come to me and the players with the rules and the regulations that impact on us. "That allows us to concentrate on what we need to concentrate on. BUY TICKETS ONLINE AT ntfcdirect.co.uk
"The spirit is first class and you could see that from the performance we put in at Cheltenham," he said.
"The first job on Monday is to make sure the players have clear heads. There is a game of football to be played and we all have our jobs to do and our responsibilities. That is something we instil in the players, if we want to be successful we have to do the fundamentals well and that is what we work really hard on."
Honours are even between the Cobblers and Monday night's opponents so far this season, with the Grecians coming out on top at St James Park in December, while the Cobblers won 2-0 at the PTS Academy Stadium in February. "We have had two good games against Exeter this season and it will be tough again on Monday," said Curle. "We know they are a good team and like most teams, they have strengths and weaknesses. We will pay them every respect but we will be looking to do all we can to get the right result on Monday. "No matter how many times you have been to Wembley and even though it will be behind closed doors, it is a special place to play. We will go there and embrace things after the game, but we will be going there to try and win a game of football. "Everybody understands we want our supporters with us. That won't be possible on Monday, that is a huge shame but they will be with us in spirit, we know that." 3

past and really gave us the belief that we could go and get the result we needed.
will be favourites to win the game but we will go there looking to do our job and give it all we have.
The Cobblers take on Exeter City for a place in Sky Bet League 1 next season of course, and Adams said they will be looking to take the level of performance from the play-off semi-final second leg in to Monday's final. "The win at Cheltenham in the semi-final second leg was unbelievable and it showed what we are about as a team," he said.
"We felt, after the first leg, there wasn't much in it, we felt we didn't have much go our way in the first game and we thought we were very much still in the tie. We had the belief, we had to respect Cheltenham and their defensive record but we know we have some big performances in us as a squad and last Monday was a very special night.
"The real shame in all of this is that the supporters can't be with us. I'm a football fan. I want the supporters with us but all we can do is do our best to give them something to shout about while they are watching or listening back at home and hopefully we can get the job done on Monday.
"We went there with not many people thinking we could do it but the Gaffer was great with us, he showed us all the inspirational videos of how teams have achieved results like that in the
"It was a great night, but it has gone now and it had gone straight after the game. We have to try and finish the job off now but it won't be easy. Exeter are a very good side and they

"I have never been to Wembley. I have got to a lot of semi-finals but never a final until now. It is the dream of any footballer to play at Wembley but we aren't going there just to enjoy the occasion, we are fully focussed on a difficult task ahead." 5

Sam Hoskins, back from suspension, replaced James Olayinka in the only change made by Keith Curle while Alfie May and Jonte Smith came in for Cheltenham. Hoskins had an early shot blocked and Callum Morton saw a header saved by Owen Evans in a bright start from the Cobblers and they were rewarded for their efforts with the 6
opening goal on nine minutes, Vadaine Oliver on the end of a tantalising cross from Nicky Adams to head home. Firmly in the ascendancy, the Cobblers then had a chance to level the tie on aggregate but after being played through by Alan McCormack, Morton couldn’t keep his shot down. Adams had a shot blocked at close range and Hoskins saw an effort deflected behind as the Cobblers kept their foot on the pedal. Smith curled wide for Cheltenham while Adams volleyed just over in another chance created by the Cobblers. A cross from Charlie Goode
then found goalscorer Oliver well-placed but this time he couldn’t keep his header down and Cheltenham kept their noses in front 2-1 on aggregate going in at half-time. Reuben Reid replaced Jonte Smith in a change for Cheltenham at half-time and it was the home side who had the first sight at goal in the second half, Steve Arnold saving from Jake Doyle-Hayes while the Cobblers keeper also did well to gather in a header from Will Boyle after a scramble in the box. SEMI-FINAL REFLECTIONS CALLUM MORTON REFLECTS ON THE PLAY-OFF SEMI-FINAL SECOND LEG VICTORY AT CHELTENHAM TOWN LAST MONDAY 10
FOLLOW US ON TWITTER @ntfc
One of the countless heroes from last Monday's play-off semi-final second leg win at Cheltenham Town was striker Callum Morton. Morton scored twice in the second half of that game to turn around a 2-0 first leg deficit, and he said although most people had written the Cobblers off ahead of that second leg, the belief in the squad remained high. "We know all about how tough a 2-0 lead can be to defend," he said. "We knew that if we went to Cheltenham and performed we gave ourselves a good chance, and that's how it worked out. "When you looked at the stats ahead of that second leg you would think it is going to be impossible, but we knew that we had it in us to score three goals."
What made the result all the more commendable was that the Robins had only lost six games all season and had only conceded twenty seven goals in total. "Cheltenham is one of the toughest places to come in the league, and I don't know when the last time was they conceded three goals, but we pounced on that," he said. "We went there with a plan, and we couldn't have carried it out better. We executed the plan perfectly, and I don't really remember them having a meaningful chance. "We knew we had to score three goals, and that is what we did, and I think we deserved it." Asked to reflect a little more on the turnaround, Morton said playing at the right tempo was key.

"It is well known that 2-0 is one of the most dangerous scorelines in football, and we knew that if we went there and didn't give them a breath, then we have the quality in us defensively and going forward that we can win the game, and we did," he said. While neither goal will necessarily trouble the Goal of the Season contenders list, no one was worried about that last Monday! "For the first I was stood by the keeper, and I would like to say I aimed it in, but the ball just hit my head and it went in. "As a striker, you will take goals like that all day. "For the second, they have obviously had a mix-up in the defence and I was first to it and put it in, and it has turned out to be the winning goal in the tie." 11

NORTHAMPTON TOWN COMMUNITY TRUST: BLACK LIVES MATTER
COBBLER IN THE CROWD
The Northampton Town Community Trust Stand for Equality, Inclusion and Justice. We stand with the black community globally as we create a better world together. As a charity, the mission of Northampton Town FC Community Trust is to connect communities and improve people’s lives, ensuring that all parts of our community are treated equally. We stand against the racism and injustice our black community endures and are committed to playing our part in raising awareness and evoking change.
After having around 930 Cobbler in the Crowd cut outs at the play-off semi-final first leg with Cheltenham Town, a few hundred more will be added to that number for Monday’s game at Wembley.
It is important we show our support but we are also committed to taking action where we are in a position to do so. Our work over the past few years has seen us deliver a variety of workshops to young people to promote inclusion working with partners such as Kick it Out, Show Racism the Red Card and The Big Ideas Company. NTFC and NTFC CT have also supported the Kick it Out matchday as a regular fixture each season.
Among those making the trip are Harry Dunn, the young Cobblers supporter so tragically killed in a road accident last August, club legends Walter Tull, Frank Large and former Club Historian Frank Grande.
The story of former Northampton Town FC player Walter Tull is one of a number of ways the message is being shared locally. Northampton Town FC Community Trust have been delivering Walter Tull educational workshops in local schools which look to counter discrimination by promoting equality and inclusion, through exciting and engaging activities. These activities promote conversation and raise understanding around the issues Walter faced, many of which are just as relevant today. Earlier this year over 100 pupils took part in a special event at the stadium.
Comedian Alan Carr is also joining the Shoe Army, alongside actor Tom Rosenthal and of course, basketball legend Shaq O’Neal. To anyone who purchased a Cobbler in the Crowd, either for yourself, someone else or to remember a loved one, thank you.
FOLLOW US ON TWITTER @ntfc
We know though that more needs to be done to address this global issue. We pledge to do our part by continuing and expanding on this work to reach and educate even more people, to raise further awareness and promote positive conversations across the Northamptonshire community and in turn to help tackle racism and inequality. We welcome discussions with organisations who would like to work with us too.

A WEMBLEY WINNER
JOHN FRAIN TO DATE, ONLY ONE MAN CAN SAY THEY HAVE SCORED THE WINNING GOAL FOR NORTHAMPTON TOWN AT WEMBLEY
That man was of course John Frain, and he famously struck a dramatic last minute winner against Swansea City in the 1997 Division 3 play-off final underneath the old twin towers. That day, that moment, lives on in Northampton Town folklore, and for Frain himself, even though that day was a little over 23 years ago, he still has very fond and very vivid memories of that afternoon. "I really enjoyed my time here at Northampton Town, it is such a friendly club," Frain said on a visit back to the PTS Academy Stadium. "It is frightening to think that day at Wembley was so long ago. I think back and it really does seem like yesterday, the memories are so clear and so vivid. "I think back and it isn't just the moment of the free kick that I can recall, it is the whole day and the two days afterwards as well with the celebrations and the bus parade. It was one of the best moments of my career and I was very fortunate to go through that. Not many footballers do and to not only play at Wembley but to win and to score the winning goal was very special indeed. "I always look out for Northampton Town's results and hopefully things are in place for the club to kick on. The Chairman seems to have the club and the club's interests very much at heart, it looks like the club is heading in the right direction and that's something I am very pleased about."

EXETER CITY After missing out on the play-offs by a single point in 2018/19, for periods of this season the Grecians looked on course for a top three finish. However when football was halted by the Coronavirus pandemic in March they were 4th in Sky Bet League 2 and when the final standings were worked out on points per game Exeter dropped a place to fifth, setting up a two legged play-off semi-final against Colchester United. Like the Cobblers, Exeter went into the second leg needing to come from behind after Cohen Bramall’s free-kick saw Colchester edge a tight first leg 1-0 in what was the first EFL game to be played since football was suspended. Exeter started the second leg strongly and Aaron Martin levelled the tie up with an early strike. Jayden Richardson then scored just before the hour mark only for the U’s to battle back and Courtney Senior scored twelve minutes from time to set up extra-time. Top goalscorer Ryan Bowman was the match winner for Exeter in extra-time and it was his goal on 111 minutes that sent the Devon side through to their third League 2 play-off final in four years. Having been unsuccessful in those previous two finals, losing to Blackpool 2-1 in 2017 and Coventry City 3-1 in 2018, Matt Taylor will be hoping for a change in fortunes when he experiences Wembley for the first time as a manager. Taylor has however previous promotion success to draw upon and in 2008 he was part of the Exeter City side that won promotion back into the EFL by beating Cambridge United 1-0 in the National League play-off final at Wembley. Exeter have three former Cobblers players in their ranks, goalkeeper Lewis Ward spent the first half of last

MEET THE MANAGER
MATT TAYLOR
MATT TAYLOR WAS APPOINTED MANAGER OF EXETER CITY ON JUNE 1, 2018 FOLLOWING THE DEPARTURE OF LONG-SERVING BOSS PAUL TISDALE. The tough tackling physical defender made more than 150 appearances for the Grecians, playing a key role as City recorded back-to-back promotions from the Football Conference to League One during his first spell at the club before going on to play for Charlton Athletic and Cheltenham Town. Matt started his playing career with non-league Burscough as a goalkeeper, helping the Linnets to an FA Trophy win over Tamworth in the 2002/03 season.
He went on to spend a number of years at non-league level, before getting his break at Exeter City in 2007. Matt returned to Exeter in the autumn of 2016 as a defensive coach and as under-23s manager he led City to a successful Under-23 Premier League Cup campaign in 2017/18. In his first season in charge of the first team Exeter finished 9th in Sky Bet League 2, just a point outside the play-offs.

JOHN MORRIS
At half time at the Jonny-Rocks Stadium in Cheltenham last Monday the Cobblers were 1-0 up. Was I getting excited? Not yet, but with a real feeling of anticipation after watching a team working top to bottom, back to front – call it what you like – to take control of the game. Next decision – coffee or wine? I opted for coffee. Too early for alcohol. Back in time to get set for the re-start. I am never one for the pundits, I like to go straight to the action. Keith Curle, showing he can be adept in the mind games, had stressed beforehand that conceding a two-goal lead would be nothing new in football. At the 45-minute stage Vadaine Oliver’s dominance in the aerial dog fights had snatched a nine minute lead, thanks to yet
another spot-on assist from Nicky Adams, leaving the Robins shaken, stirred but still ahead in the tie. At the PTS Academy Stadium their football had been smooth, their finishing clinical. In the second leg, Keith’s heroes stepped up the pace and with the constant pressure cracks appeared. Callum Morton, having the best time so far of his tender years, settled it with two goals. First a neat header in a goalmouth tussle – who cares but I am not sure he knew too much about it – and then a sharp reflex finish to snatch the winner as the ball came back off the post. Manager Keith Curle was asked how he managed to motivate his players and explained that he had shown them videos of Arsenal going to face Liverpool at Anfield and achieving when they needed to overturn a 2-0 deficit back in 1989.
John, Chairman of the club’s Charitable Foundation, a lifelong Cobblers fan, former journalist and the retired general secretary of the British Boxing Board of Control, takes you behind the scenes at the PTS Academy Stadium.

I am sure it helped but for me Keith really hit an answer when he thanked the club staff for all their support through the lockdown. The feel-good atmosphere started at the top with chairman Kelvin Thomas and his board and continued through senior staff to Keith and his squad. The players showed their appreciation by waiving their bonuses for the play-offs, and delighted Keith by returning to training very close to peak fitness. The togetherness through the club was there for us all to see at Cheltenham as every player delivered near 100 per cent. It was a terrible shame none of us could be there to salute a slice of Cobblers’ history, but all shared it thanks to Sky Sports or perhaps Tim Oglethorpe’s emotional commentary for BBC Radio Northampton – you do a great job Tim. I spent much of the second half on my feet and leapt with a roar at the end – no mean feat at the age 84. No champagne close at hand so the wine had to do. The Jonny Rocks triumph was a great comeback, and in my life in boxing I have seen quite a few. ADD US ON SNAPCHAT officiallyntfc

1937-2020 Northampton Town Football Club are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Cobbler Theo Foley. Theo was born in Dublin and began his career with Home Farm. He spent some time on trial at Burnley before moving to Exeter City who were then in Division Three South and he would go on to spend five seasons at St. James Park.
In January 1970 he was promoted to assistant manager and three months later he was acting manager, being promoted to team manager in the close season. He was sacked in April 1974 just days after receiving a rose bowl from the supporters and ten days before Charlton were awarded £4,000 for being one of the highest scoring clubs.
In 1961 Dave Bowen signed him for the Cobblers for a small fee. Theo captained the Cobblers as the club rose through the divisions but in Division One injury took its toll. He also missed a large chunk of the following season (66-67) and was released at the end of that campaign.
After a spell with Dulwich Hamlet as coach and advisor he joined LBC radio station and took on broadcasting duties. After a short spell with Dartford he moved to Millwall as coach and was promoted to caretaker manager when Gordon Jago left but when George Petchley was put in as manager three weeks later, Theo resigned.
Theo made over 220 appearances for the Cobblers, scoring over 11 goals and although Theo was offered a coaching job with Northampton he instead decided to continue playing, joining Charlton as player coach.
Loftus Road was the next stop as he coached the QPR reserves side before returning to Millwall as assistant to George Graham. Both manager and coach moved to Arsenal in 1986 with tremendous success.

Theo felt he wanted to become a team manager again and applied for the vacant job at the Cobblers with the club back in to Division Four by this time, and he built a side that was challenging for a promotion spot until the last few games when injuries struck. The following season there was a change of board, the better players were sold and the administrators sacked Theo. He joined Fulham as their youth team coach then became a coach at Southend United under Ronnie Whelan. Theo’s final coaching position was at Tottenham where there was a strong Northampton connection. Graham Carr was Chief Scout, John Alexander was secretary, Colin Calderwood, who would later be a Northampton manager, was also a coach and Justin Edinburgh was a player. We send our condolences and best wishes to Theo’s family and friends. 35
