Caretaker boss Jon Brady made two changes for the trip to Ipswich with Fraser Horsfall and Jack Sowerby replacing Cian Bolger and Ryan Watson as Joseph Mills donned the captain’s armband. Ex-Cobblers David Cornell and Luke Chambers were among the substitutes for the home side.

Sam Hoskins shot straight at Tomas Holy early on with the Ipswich keeper later doing well to deny Jack Sowerby after the midfielder was fed in by Danny Rose. It was a tight angle for Sowerby and, under pressure, his low shot was well saved by Holy.

Troy Parrott dragged a long-range free-kick wide and Freddie Sears fired over as the Cobblers really restricted Ipswich in the opening half an hour whilst posing a real threat going forward, Hoskins seeing a shot blocked at close range following a Sowerby lay-off and Peter Kioso denied by a combination of Holy and the post in a spell of concerted pressure leading up to half-time.

Myles Kenlock headed over from a corner early in the second half before another shooting opportunity for the Cobblers, Sowerby this time denied by a close range block after being played in by a defence splitting ball from Bryn Morris.

Jack Lankester came on as Ipswich boss Paul Lambert started to ring the changes, Teddy Bishop and Alan Judge also coming on to overhaul the home side’s midfield.

As the substitutions continued Ryan Watson and Benny Ashley-Seal replaced Mark Marshall and Danny Rose in a double change for the Cobblers with James Norwood on for Ipswich and the ex-Tranmere frontman was denied the game’s opening goal by a terrific save from Jonathan Mitchell, the on-loan Derby keeper getting down low to make the save with his legs.

The game was still delicately poised going into the last ten minutes and while Ipswich skipper Flynn Downes was sent off in added time, neither side were able to force a winner and the points were shared.

It’s a good point but when I look at the performance I’m a bit disappointed we didn’t get all three.

“If you look at the stats for the first half we had six shots to Ipswich’s none and we are the away side. Their keeper made an incredible save from Peter Kioso on to the bar and it won’t show in the stats but we also had a really good chance just after half-time. "This is an intelligent group, they will work hard for each other and they are expressing themselves.
