ETHAN GRANDE LOOKS BACK AT NORTHAMPTON TOWN MATCHES ON THIS DATE IN YEARS GONE BY.
2016 YORK CITY 1 NORTHAMPTON TOWN 2
The Cobblers started brightly with John Marquis charging clear of the defence on 17 minutes only for home keeper Scott Flinders to smother at his feet. York were chasing shadows for long periods of the first half, although Jake Hyde shot wide from 20 yards just before the half-hour mark. James Collins broke the deadlock, however, on 40 minutes when he headed in from six yards at the far post following Brendan Moloney's right-wing cross. Northampton doubled their advantage six minutes into the second half when James Collins burst down the right and his low cross was converted from a yard out by John Marquis. Penn, brought on as a substitute on the hour-mark, thumped in a 25-yard dipping volley in the 93rd minute, but there was no time to make it change the final outcome. The Cobblers extended their run to a club record 10 wins in a row.
2002 CHESTERFIELD 2 NORTHAMPTON TOWN 2
On this day in 2002 the Cobblers took a trip to a snowy Saltergate to play Chesterfield in League 2. The Cobblers side had one change from the side that had beaten Peterborough 2-1 just 4 days before, Richard Hope replacing the injured Roy Hunter. It didn’t take long for the goals to come and in the third minute, the recalled Hope stooped to head in James Hunt’s free kick. Just ten minutes later Chesterfield equalised as the ball fell kindly to Marcus Ebdon who drilled in a low cross. The score didn’t stay level for long as on the 22nd minute Jamie Forrester was on hand to net a Marco Gabbiadini knock down which gave the Cobblers the lead for a second time. However after half time, Chesterfield equalised for a second time as Burt nipped in ahead of Chris Marsh to net the equaliser.
1991 WREXHAM 0 NORTHAMPTON TOWN 2
DIVISION 4
Both of the Cobblers goals came in the first half. In the 26th minute, Wayne Williams crossed for Steve Terry to hammer home a goal from close range. The second goal game just 10 minutes later as Bobby Barnes turned Hardy and slipped the ball under the keeper.
