Once a horse’s ability has been assessed by the Official BHA Handicapper it is given an official rating. This is an assessment that determines how much weight it shall carry compared to the other runners. In simple terms a horse rated 100 carries 2lbs less than a horse rated 102. A rating over 130 is well above average and the winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup is normally rated over 160 Most handicap races have an upper rating limit to encourage runners of similar ability to take part and make a competitive race e.g 0-110, and a 28lb weight-range
One Fit Padded Hurdle: The ‘One Fit’ design is a modified hurdle frame with a custom fitting close-cell foam pad replacing the traditional birch. The hurdle was developed with the objective of reducing both the faller rate and the risk of injury as the result of a fall. They are 3ft high and placed in the ground at an attractive angle to encourage horses to jump them fluently
At Perth there are five flights of Hurdles on the course Eight are jumped in a two mile race, nine in a race over two miles and five furlongs and eleven in a race over three miles.
Steeplechase fences are made from hardwood frames stuffed tightly with birch When making a fence the birch is packed in at a height of approximately 6ft, then cut down to a maximum height of 4ft 6”. There are five ‘plain fences’ on the course at Perth and two ‘open ditches’ An Open Ditch is the same height as a plain fence but has a small ditch in front of the fence to make them a bigger test for the horse and rider
At Perth there are two open ditches on the course, the first fence in the straight and the first down the back straight. Perth is one of the last remaining racecourses to have a Water Jump, this is situated in front of the main Grandstand and is much smaller than the other fences, with a 6ft wide water jump behind a small birch fence. There are eight steeplechase fences on the course Twelve are jumped in a race over two miles, fifteen over two miles and four furlongs and nineteen in races over three miles.
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
These races are designed to provide a fair and competitive contest before a horse is allocated a weight, according to his ability, to run in a Handicap These races are therefore normally for young horses aged from 3 to 5-y-o. As a 5-y-o is deemed to be stronger than a 3-y-o he/she will be made a to carry a little more weight. Once a horse has won a weight for age race he/she will be asked to carry a ‘penalty’; this is normally an additional 7lbs. Once a horse has won or run three times in a Weight for Age race he can be assessed and given a weight in a Handicap Race.

Racing’s top priority is the safety and welfare of horse and rider People join the racing industry because they share a genuine love for horses. Like most sports, racing carries risks, however, we work to ensure that no death or injury occurs which could have been prevented. Horses have the right to a decent and fulfilling life, both during their racing career and afterwards. We are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected round any horse receiving veterinary attention on the course This does not reflect the severity of the injury but allows the vet some privacy in which to administer treatment and provides the horse with a calm environment in which to make a recovery Please therefore do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse

Successful on his only start in points, SPADESTEP shaped like a sure-fire future winner under Rules when runner-up behind one boasting much more experience on hurdles bow at Carlisle 47 days ago. He can confirm the promise of that effort and come out on top. Junker d’Allier should appreciate the return to calmer waters and is a definite threat. PLAY SMARTER
The most interesting of these is WAL BUCK’S, who has low-mileage for a 6-y-o and he did the job well when getting off the mark over fences at Haydock during the winter His jumping wasn’t so slick next time but it’s easy to forgive that given his otherwise progressive profile Olivers Travels and One More Stroke may emerge as the main dangers, assuming Next Left, who ran here on Wednesday, doesn’t take his chance.

Probable S.P’s: 5-4 Wilstar (IRE), 8-1 Spectacularsunrise (GB), 10-1 Sanilam (IRE), 11-1 The Hatchet (IRE), 12-1 Kool Raoul (FR), 14-1 Sleedagh (IRE), 16-1 Linalene (FR), 22-1 Joeybottles (IRE), 25-1 Tree Top Tyson (IRE), 66-1 Mavetherave (IRE), 80-1 Ryebridge (IRE), She Rocks The Park (IRE), 200-1 Uncle Al (IRE)
This is all about WILSTAR, who is from a top-class family and while he failed to justify favouritism on debut at Warwick, it was still a highly promising debut in finishing third in that 14-runner bumper, without being given a hard time Spectacularsunrise wasn’t discredited in what looked a borderline-useful contest at Kempton and he is next on the list. The Hatchet was fourth in the Ayr bumper won by Sanilam but he arguably possesses the greater potential and should also have a part to play.
The Great British Bonus (GBB) incentivises and rewards with breeding, buying and racing of British-bred fillies by paying out bonuses of up to £100,000 per filly And now with GBBPlus to further incentivise staying fillies and chasing mares, there are more reasons than ever to breed, buy and race British. Majority funded by the HBLB.
