MONDAY 18TH NOVEMBER 2024

WELCOME

Welcome to The Racehorse Sanctuary Raceday

Our fourth fixture of the season and I would like to welcome you to The Racehorse Sanctuary Raceday. The Racehorse Sanctuary and Rehoming Centre is based in Pulborough, West Sussex and provides a lifeline for horses who need time to adjust to a life after racing. As one of the leading organisations in this field, its work is vital to thoroughbred welfare and through their rehabilitation, retraining and sanctuary programmes can give ex-racehorses a second chance in life in the form of a number of equine disciplines; hacking, eventing, dressage, showjumping or even as a companion.

We have already had a great start to the season welcoming many thousands of people and seeing some fantastic horses and close finishes. We are sure today will be equally as exciting and I thank you for your continued support.

I would like to thank our Partners; Southern Cranes and Access Ltd, BetGoodwin and Strong Flavours for their tremendous support for the 2024/25 Season, along with today’s sponsors, Weatherbys and CPJ Field. We wish you all have a tremendous day.

We have a 6-race card today, with 24 runners declared worth £68,750 of prize money. Our feature on the track today is our 3rd race the £20,000 Class 3 Southern Cranes & Access Ltd Novices Handicap Chase which was won last year by Brave Kingdom, trained by Paul Nicholls and ridden by Bryony Frost defeating General Medrano. Although the renewal this year has only 4 going to post, they are a strong bunch and looks a competitive race. We also have The Royal Yeomanry Association Amateur Jockeys Handicap Hurdle where we have a total of 4 going to post.

We have pleasure in welcoming C Squadron, Royal Yeomanry. You will see several troops around the site along with a jackal vehicle that will be positioned outside the Final Fence Restaurant, so please visit and find out more about the Squadron. There will also be an Honour Guard for the 4th Race.

Our Retired Racehorse Stable has been very well received and today we are lucky to have Pete the Feat, who has enjoyed an accomplished career with 47 runs, 11 wins and 12 placings. He has run at Plumpton 9 times winning once, beating Beware Chalk Pit by 12 lengths. Pop down and give him a polo and a pat. Pete The Feat is a resident horse of The Racehorse Sanctuary.

Our next fixtures will be our two Christmas fixtures on Monday 2nd and Monday 16th December, so we hope to see many of you back here for the Christmas Parties as there is always such a great atmosphere both on and off the track, with the Christmas jumpers, Christmas market, live music and competitive racing. Christmas is always in high demand, so if you are thinking of booking hospitality for either the 2nd or 16th December make sure you contact our team now, not to miss out. Looking past Christmas we have our first Premier Raceday of 2025, the ever popular Sussex National on the 5th January so please make sure you book your tickets or hospitality early.

Have a great day.

Best wishes,

Stewards

Although a beaten odds-on favourite on his hurdling debut last month, ROMAN ROY can reward his supporters today. The son of Blue Bresil should appreciate a step up in trip on his second start following wind surgery and the yard have hit a real purple patch of late. Canal Court finished a distant second at Kempton recently but, with a tongue-tie applied for the first time, he is the main danger. Sign Again could chase the pair home.

totewin: Roman Roy

toteeachway: Canal Court

21lb clear of his nearest rival Kilcummin on official ratings and in receipt of 6lb, this ought to be a fourth hurdles success for the Jennie Candlish-trained MATCHLESS. Second in a 0-120 over 2m4f at Perth in September to solidify his claims further, the drop in trip should also suit. Tara Iti struck the woodwork in a similar event at Huntingdon six days ago and is most appealing of the remainder.

totewin: Matchless

toteeachway: Kilcummin

MENAGGIO made the perfect start to life over fences when winning a three-runner C&D event last month. It’s hard to know what he really achieved there and a 4lb rise will make things tougher, but he ought to progress and is taken to follow up. Sea Invasion makes his seasonal return/chasing bow and looks a likely type, although Everyonesgame, who held the highest rating of these over timber, might be well handicapped from a mark of 121.

totewin: Menaggio

toteeachway: Sea Invasion

Although still a maiden under Rules, Eaton Anne has done little wrong in his three placed efforts over hurdles to date. Olly Murphy’s gelding is only 2lb higher than his second-placed handicap bow at Stratford and another prominent role is forecast. However, SMUGGLERS HAVEN accounted for a subsequent winner when opening his account at Hereford last month and the five-year-old may prove to be the better handicapped of the pair. Highway One O Five can chase the duo home.

totewin: Smugglers Haven

toteeachway: Eaton Anne

Having tallied three victories over hurdles since racing under the tutelage of Olly Murphy in May, VOCITO could make the most of a lower mark over fences. The six-year-old ticks plenty of the right boxes and he is narrowly preferred to fellow in-form rival Nevendon. The Nathaniel gelding arrives on the back of a solid second at Fakenham and a 1lb nudge up in the ratings shouldn’t prevent him from going close once more. Koenigsstern is unexposed in this sphere and he cannot be ruled out either.

totewin: Vocito

toteeachway: Nevendon

The fitting of a first-time visor enabled a career-best victory from MAGICAL ARTHUR when coming home 11 lengths clear of his nearest pursuer at Kempton recently. A 7lb penalty may not be enough to stop the Jennie Candlish-trained six-year-old from going in again and he’s taken to continue his upward trajectory. Bella Cavalla has filled the runner-up berth on her last two outings and she may serve the most resistance to the selection, ahead of Chancellorstown.

totewin: Magical Arthur

toteeachway: Bella Cavalla

With cheekpieces added, HIGHWAY ONE O FIVE showed the benefit of his reappearance when third at this C&D 2 weeks ago and he could be ready to open his account for last year’s winning trainer of the race. Eaton Anne isn’t taken lightly upped further in trip, while Smugglers Haven could also still have more to offer.
