Chase - A race run over fences.
Cheekpieces - A form of headgear which consists of pieces of sheepskin placed on either side of the bridle and performs a similar job as blinkers in helping the horse to concentrate.
Clerk of the course - The person responsible for the overall management of a racecourse on a raceday.

Maiden - A horse who has yet to win a race.
Neck - A measurement used to describe a winning margin in a close finish.

Pulled up - A horse who is brought to a halt during a race by its jockey.
Pulling - A horse who is keen during a race and wants to go faster than its jockey is allowing.
Pushed out - Describes a horse who has gone clear of its rivals in a race after minimal urging from its jockey.
Staying on - A phrase referring to a horse who finished strongly during the closing stages.
Stewards’ inquiry - An inquiry held at the racecourse on a raceday after any given race
Tongue-tie - A strap used to tie down a horse’s tongue to prevent the tongue getting over the bit which affects a horse’s breathing.
Turn of foot - A term to describe marked acceleration during a race.

MARK OF GOLD stuck to his task and capitalised on his rival’s last-fence blunder when making a winning chase bow in a Grade 2 at Ascot 16 days ago. The eight-year-old makes grand appeal now going handicapping over fences and this looks a suitable opportunity for him to complete a brace. The biggest threat may emerge from Lord Of Thunder, who shaped well on his first completed start over fences when finishing fourth at Exeter last month. Classic Anthem is noted too. totewin: Mark Of Gold
toteeachway: Lord Of Thunder
Morning Air justified favouritism when making a winning hurdles/UK debut at Leicester last month and another bold bid looks likely. However, the form of that race could have worked out better and Venetia Williams’ filly will need to improve to defy a 6lb penalty. With that in mind, it could be worth taking a punt on 84-rated Flat performer GIBBS ISLAND, who could take some stopping if taking to this discipline. Narragansett and Risk It All are also noted.

A wind procedure worked the oracle for last month’s Doncaster scorer JAX JUNIOR. Lucy Wadham’s gelding impressed with how quickly he put his rivals to bed and a 6lb penalty may not be enough to prevent him from following up. As The Fella Says made a respectable hurdles bow when runner-up at Warwick 24 days ago and the son of Soldier Of Fortune can put up the most resistance to the selection, ahead of the hat-trick seeking The Bluesman.

Pertemps Final winner Monmiral improved from his return effort in a qualifier for the same series at Newbury to finish runner-up in the Long Distance Hurdle at the same venue. The eight-year-old warrants plenty of respect but he does face a stiff task against some interesting opponents with CLOUD DANCER getting the nod. The step up to 3m at Doncaster last time saw him take a big step forward and a 6lb rise doesn’t appear overly harsh. Transmission bids to repeat his remarkable success in this event from 12 months ago.
totewin: Cloud Dancer
toteeachway: Monmiral

UNANSWERED PRAYERS won the Southern National on his penultimate start before following that effort with a decent third in the London National. The handicapper left him alone for the latest of those efforts and an ease in grade may see the nine-year-old back to winning ways. Dom Of Mary returns to the scene of his finest hour having won this by 10 lengths 12 months ago. Others to note are Minella Blueway and Jerrash.
totewin: Unanswered Prayers
toteeachway: Dom Of Mary
I Shut That D’or has won over course and distance on two of his last three starts and beat Theonlywayiswessex on the first of those occasions. The latter has won here subsequently and there is little to choose between that pair on these revised terms, but SUN JOY is less exposed over fences. This six-year-old was having only his second start in a chase when runner-up at Sedgefield in November and a bold bid is expected from Ben Pauling’s charge.
totewin: Sun Joy
toteeachway: I Shut That D’or
BUCEPHALUS bounced back to form when finishing a respectable second at Chepstow last week. He could go close if able to back that up and is taken to edge an open affair. A winner at Lingfield last time, Snapius arrives in fine form and is likely to prove competitive once again, despite a 5lb rise, while Inferno Sacree is not out of it either returning to a shorter trip. Moab is the least exposed and is another to note.

Joe Tizzard and Brendan Powell combined to take this last year, and they can repeat the trick with LORD OF THUNDER, who ran respectably at Exeter last month and remains a chaser to view positively with a first-time tongue tie applied. Mark of Gold, who took advantage of Personal Ambition’s last-fence blunder to make a winning start over fences at Ascot just over a fortnight ago, rates as the obvious danger.

2024: DOM OF MARY (FR) 8 10 11 Caoilin Quinn 9-2 (David Bridgwater) 11 ran Blinkers worn by No. 5. Visor worn by No. 3. Tongue Strap worn by No. 1. Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn by No. 4. Stewards Note: GOLD CLERMONT: Following its run on 22/12/2024 it was reported that the horse was never travelling.
Probable S.P’s: 4-1 Unanswered Prayers (IRE), 9-2 East Street (IRE), Minella Blueway (IRE), 11-2 Jerrash (GB), 10-1 Broken Halo (GB), 11-1 Dom of Mary (FR), 12-1 Animal (IRE), 16-1 Gold Clermont (FR)
Evan Williams’ progressive MINELLA BLUEWAY is the least exposed chaser in the field and gets the vote with this first try beyond 3m likely to yield further improvement. Last year’s stylish victor Dom of Mary looks primed for another bold showing and is next on the list, although Animal, Unanswered Prayers, Broken Halo and East Street are all worthy of consideration too in a competitive Sussex National.

GOODWIN FACE: Following its run on 21/12/2024 it was reported that the horse hung left-handed.
Probable S.P’s: 7-2 Snapius (IRE), 4-1 Bucephalus (GER), 11-2 Schmilsson (GB), 7-1 Moab (IRE), Goodwin Face (FR), 8-1 Aggagio (FR), Inferno Sacree (FR)
A competitive 7-runner handicap. AGGAGIO could be the answer to this puzzle, having shaped better than his finishing position last time, so he’s on a winnable mark if back on-song. Any market support for the selection would be significant. Recent runner-up Bucephalus and C&D winner Inferno Sacree both like to front run, and they can fill the placings and give Aggagio a nice lead into the race.
