MONDAY 10TH MARCH 2025

WELCOME

Welcome to Plumpton – Cheltenham Preview Raceday

Sadly, we lost our last raceday to waterlogging, which was both disappointing and frustrating for everyone, but I am pleased to welcome you to the Cheltenham Preview Raceday.

With the biggest Jumps Festival of the year in the same week, we of course want to acknowledge this at our fixture and as such we run our traditional Cheltenham Preview in the Final Fence Marquee.

This year, the event will be hosted by Dave Orton from Sky Racing, and the expert panel is packed with experience and insight, making it easy to find winners for the Festival! The panel will feature Tom Cannon, Mike Cattermole, Aidan Coleman, Chris Gordon, Charlie Poste, Julian Head and Alan King, ensuring a fantastic hour of expert analysis. Additionally, the event will be streamed throughout the racecourse and on YouTube, so you can tune in even if you’re not in the marquee. With the preview starting at 12:45pm, be sure to arrive early to catch all the action!

I would like to thank our Partners; BetGoodwin and Southern Cranes and Access Ltd for their tremendous support throughout the 2024/25 Season and today’s sponsor The Family of John Ellis. We wish you all have a tremendous day.

We have a cracking card for punters to get their teeth into today, with 38 runners declared across 6 races worth over £54,000 of prize money. Our feature on the track today is our fifth race the £11,000 Class 4, The Book Our Season Finale Raceday Handicap Steeple Chase. Today’s race looks to be very competitive with a select field of 4 and we wish all the owners, trainers and horses the very best of luck across the card.

Our next fixtures will be Thursday 3rd April and Sunday 6th April, followed by our Easter Festival (Premier racedays) which will be held on Sunday 20th and Monday 21st April. By booking now you will secure our best ticket prices as this is a popular racing weekend with both tickets and hospitality always in high demand.

Have a great day at Plumpton, Heart Of The Community.

Best wishes

Jargon

Bit - A piece of metal that sits in the horse’s mouth and is attached to the bridle and reins

Blinkers - A type of headgear fitted to a horse that limits its field of vision, mainly from each side. Blinkers are designed to help horses concentrate in races.

Boxed in - When a horse cannot obtain a clear run during a race due to other horses being in close proximity.

Bridle - A piece of tack that fits over a horse’s head and to which the bit and reins are attached.

Bumper - Also known as a National Hunt Flat race, this race has no obstacles. Used as a way to give horses race experience before tackling hurdles and fences.

Chase - A race run over fences.

Cheekpieces - A form of headgear which consists of pieces of sheepskin placed on either side of the bridle and performs a similar job as blinkers in helping the horse to concentrate.

Clerk of the course - The person responsible for the overall management of a racecourse on a raceday.

Fences - The type of obstacle jumped during a chase race.

Furlong - A unit of measurement. A furlong is an eighth of a mile or a little more than 201 meters.

Going - The underfoot conditions at the racecourse.

Going Stick - A device used to measure the underfoot conditions at the racecourse.

Handicap - A type of race in which horses carry different weights depending on their overall rating, which is determined by the handicapper.

Hood - A type of headgear fitted over the horse’s head to cover its ears and muffle the noise of a raceday.

Hurdles - The obstacles jumped during a hurdle race. They are smaller than fences and therefore take less jumping. Sometimes referred to as flights.

Length - The length of a horse from its nose to the start of its tail, and a measurement used to describe the distances between horses at the finish line.

Maiden - A horse who has yet to win a race.

Neck - A measurement used to describe a winning margin in a close finish.

Non-runner - A horse withdrawn from a race for which it had been declared.

Novice - A race for horses who are in their first season in that code of racing.

Off the bridle - A term to describe a horse not travelling well.

On the bridle - A term to describe a horse travelling well.

Open ditch - A fence with a ditch on the take-off side.

Outsider - A horse whose chance of winning is considered unlikely.

Parade ring - The area of a racecourse where horses are paraded before each race.

Photo finish - A close race finish, requiring the raceday judge to consult a photo before declaring the winner.

Pulled up - A horse who is brought to a halt during a race by its jockey.

Pulling - A horse who is keen during a race and wants to go faster than its jockey is allowing.

Pushed out - Describes a horse who has gone clear of its rivals in a race after minimal urging from its jockey.

Staying on - A phrase referring to a horse who finished strongly during the closing stages.

Stewards’ inquiry - An inquiry held at the racecourse on a raceday after any given race

Tongue-tie - A strap used to tie down a horse’s tongue to prevent the tongue getting over the bit which affects a horse’s breathing.

Turn of foot - A term to describe marked acceleration during a race.

Under starter’s orders - Before a race, the starter brings the field of horses into order to prepare them for the start of the race

Weighed in - Every horse in a race has to carry a certain amount of weight. To ensure it does, all jockeys must weight in/out both before and after a race. The ‘weighed in’ announcement made after the race means the result stands.

MORE COKO maintained his unbeaten record when coasting home at Carlisle last month and a double penalty is unlikely to halt his progression, Willie Mullins’ charge looks capable of more and he’s taken to fend off chief threat Old Cowboy. The son of Blue Bresil should prove more competitive than his latest effort in a class 2 event at Ascot. Drumheller may fare best of the remainder.

SELECTION: MORE COKO

Danger: Old Cowboy

PESCATORIUS lost little in defeat when finding only an unexposed rival too strong at Huntingdon 18 days ago. A 1lb nudge up in the ratings may prove inconsequential for Harriet Dickin’s inmate and a second career victory could be on the cards. J’habite En France finished behind the selection in third and the six-year-old isn’t taken lightly racing off an unchanged mark. Celtic Ned and Taxus Baccata are also noted.

SELECTION: PESCATORIUS

Danger: J’habite En France

4

A spin on the Flat when finishing fourth at Wolverhampton 13 days ago should have put EARLY MORNING DEW spot-on for this return to hurdles. The nine-year-old is lurking on an attractive mark and a breakthrough victory in this discipline looms. Graham hasn’t cut much ice in three timber outings to date, but he enters handicaps off a workable-looking rating. The son of Time Test is feared most, ahead of Character Testing.

SELECTION: EARLY MORNING DEW

Danger: Graham

RICKETY BRIDGE, a creditable second in a class 2 series qualifier at Chepstow last month, is readily suggested as the one to be with as he drops in class. Despereaux rounded last year off in good form and can figure despite being being held off this mark at Taunton last time out. La Dolce Dolly is the least exposed of these in handicaps and could be the surprise package on these terms.

SELECTION: RICKETY BRIDGE

5

Danger: Despereaux

HAVAILA likes a stamina test and a first-time hood could be instrumental in the six-year-old doubling his tally over fences. Drying ground would be a slight concern, but the son of Le Havre otherwise holds a major chance off just 4lb higher for his Lingfield success in January. Basford ran a couple of nice races in defeat before a disappointing latest effort at Market Rasen and he looks the main threat, ahead of I See You Well.

SELECTION: HAVAILA

Danger: Basford

The still low-mileage SMUGGLERS HAVEN impressed when landing the second leg of a brace of wins with a smooth effort over C&D most recently and has strong credentials back fresh on the back of a break. Lumi Plugin has been knocking on the door of late and is another solid contender back in trip despite failing to justify favouritism over 3m2f here last month. Two To Tango completes the shortlist.

SELECTION: SMUGGLERS HAVEN

Danger: Lumi Plugin

Willie Mullins has his first runner at Plumpton in MORE COKO and the Carlisle winner can make it 4-4 with further improvement on the way. Old Cowboy hasn’t convinced in the finish the last twice but is the obvious threat for the Moore yard.

HORSE CARE AT PLUMPTON

At every race meeting at Plumpton there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action.

During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Paramedic team responsible for human casualties.

The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race.

Having raced off a BHA mark of 80 on the Flat, GRAHAM is an interesting contender rated only 93 for his handicap hurdle debut and he may be able to leave behind the form he has shown in maiden hurdles now back on a sounder surface. He’s worth a market check, as is Early Morning Dew who is potentially well-treated returning to this sphere for the first time for current connections. Lady Caro set a good gallop when narrowly denied at Hereford in December, and she’s a player if back on song.

Probable S.P’s: 2-1 Rickety Bridge (FR), 7-2 Despereaux (FR), 4-1 La Dolce Dolly (IRE), 11-2 Limerick Leader (FR), 7-1 Warranty (FR)

None of these can be ruled out but LA DOLCE DOLLY took a step forward on her first go in handicaps when fourth at Market Rasen and can now add to her pointing success with her stamina unlocked more. Paul Nicholls’ lightly-raced Chepstow runner-up Rickety Bridge is feared most, although Limerick Leader, Despereaux and Warranty all command plenty of respect too in an intriguing contest.

TIMEFORM VIEW Fair winner at 3m over hurdles. Has taken to fences quite well this season, second of 4 at Fakenham (29f) last month. Needs to shrug off a lesser effort at Market Rasen (27.6f, good) 6 days ago however, and first-time blinkers are given a whirl. TFRHHHHI BHA104

Stewards Note:

2024: NO CORRESPONDING RACE LAST YEAR

HAVAILA: Following its run on 11/2/2025 it was reported that the horse ran too free.

BASFORD: Following its run on 4/3/2025 it was reported that the horse hung right-handed.

Probable S.P’s: 8-15 Havaila (IRE), 9-4 Basford (IRE), 14-1 I See You Well (FR) PLAY SMARTER

Preference is for HAVAILA, who opened his account in this sphere at Lingfield on penultimate start and shaped as if still in good form despite pulling hard when third back there since. A first-time hood should help him settle and he can get the better of Basford, who has taken to fences quite well this season but needs to leave behind a below-par effort at Market Rasen last week.
