RACEDAY

THURSDAY 3RD APRIL 2025

Welcome to Plumpton – Jamie’s Farm Raceday

Our fourth fixture of the year is here, and we are excited to host our third Jamie’s Farm Charity Race Day, organized and led by renowned journalist and legendary racing broadcaster Brough Scott, along with his dedicated committee. Although the original event was scheduled for February 24th, it had to be abandoned due to waterlogging. However, thanks to the hard work and dedication of all involved, we are pleased to announce that the event has been successfully rearranged.

For those that are not aware, Jamie’s Farm offers a preventative solution to young people at risk of social and academic exclusion. Small groups of young people are immersed into farm life during a weeklong residential, or series of day visits, tackling real jobs with tangible outcomes. Within a supportive family environment this encourages cooperation, boosts self-esteem, and builds positive relationships. Jamie’s Farm Lewes is just 3 miles from Plumpton.

I would like to thank our Partners; BetGoodwin and Southern Cranes and Access Ltd for their tremendous support throughout the 2024/25 Season, along with today’s sponsors, Ladbrokes, Hot To Trot Racing, The Jolly Sportsman, BetGoodwin, LGT Wealth Management and More radio. We wish you all have a tremendous day.

We have a cracking card for punters to get their teeth into today, with 35 runners declared across 6 races worth over £49,000 of prize money. Our feature on the track today is our fifth race The LGT Wealth Management Handicap Hurdle Race worth £11,400. Today’s race looks to be very competitive with a select field of 4 and we wish all the owners, trainers and horses the very best of luck across the card.

Our Retired Racehorse Stable was very well received last season and today we are lucky to have Who Dares Win who has run 60 times and has amassed over £360k earnings across both codes (flat and jumps). Who Dares Wins ran at Plumpton in January 2020 finishing second, being denied by a neck. Pop over and give him a polo and a pat.

Our next fixture will be Sunday 6th April, followed by our Easter Festival (Premier racedays) which will be held on Sunday 20th and Monday 21st April. By booking now you will secure our best ticket prices as this is a popular racing weekend with both tickets and hospitality always in high demand.

Have a great day at Plumpton, Heart Of The Community.

Best wishes

Jargon

Bit - A piece of metal that sits in the horse’s mouth and is attached to the bridle and reins

Blinkers - A type of headgear fitted to a horse that limits its field of vision, mainly from each side. Blinkers are designed to help horses concentrate in races.

Boxed in - When a horse cannot obtain a clear run during a race due to other horses being in close proximity.

Bridle - A piece of tack that fits over a horse’s head and to which the bit and reins are attached.

Bumper - Also known as a National Hunt Flat race, this race has no obstacles. Used as a way to give horses race experience before tackling hurdles and fences.

Chase - A race run over fences.

Cheekpieces - A form of headgear which consists of pieces of sheepskin placed on either side of the bridle and performs a similar job as blinkers in helping the horse to concentrate.

Clerk of the course - The person responsible for the overall management of a racecourse on a raceday.

Fences - The type of obstacle jumped during a chase race.

Furlong - A unit of measurement. A furlong is an eighth of a mile or a little more than 201 meters.

Going - The underfoot conditions at the racecourse.

Going Stick - A device used to measure the underfoot conditions at the racecourse.

Handicap - A type of race in which horses carry different weights depending on their overall rating, which is determined by the handicapper.

Hood - A type of headgear fitted over the horse’s head to cover its ears and muffle the noise of a raceday.

Hurdles - The obstacles jumped during a hurdle race. They are smaller than fences and therefore take less jumping. Sometimes referred to as flights.

Length - The length of a horse from its nose to the start of its tail, and a measurement used to describe the distances between horses at the finish line.

Maiden - A horse who has yet to win a race.

Neck - A measurement used to describe a winning margin in a close finish.

Non-runner - A horse withdrawn from a race for which it had been declared.

Novice - A race for horses who are in their first season in that code of racing.

Off the bridle - A term to describe a horse not travelling well.

On the bridle - A term to describe a horse travelling well.

Open ditch - A fence with a ditch on the take-off side.

Outsider - A horse whose chance of winning is considered unlikely.

Parade ring - The area of a racecourse where horses are paraded before each race.

Photo finish - A close race finish, requiring the raceday judge to consult a photo before declaring the winner.

Pulled up - A horse who is brought to a halt during a race by its jockey.

Pulling - A horse who is keen during a race and wants to go faster than its jockey is allowing.

Pushed out - Describes a horse who has gone clear of its rivals in a race after minimal urging from its jockey.

Staying on - A phrase referring to a horse who finished strongly during the closing stages.

Stewards’ inquiry - An inquiry held at the racecourse on a raceday after any given race

Tongue-tie - A strap used to tie down a horse’s tongue to prevent the tongue getting over the bit which affects a horse’s breathing.

Turn of foot - A term to describe marked acceleration during a race.

Under starter’s orders - Before a race, the starter brings the field of horses into order to prepare them for the start of the race

Weighed in - Every horse in a race has to carry a certain amount of weight. To ensure it does, all jockeys must weight in/out both before and after a race. The ‘weighed in’ announcement made after the race means the result stands.

1 This represents a good opportunity for JOLYJUMP to build on a couple of more promising efforts posted since he was pulled in a deeper race over C&D in February. Having jumped with more fluency when second at Southwell last month, the Moores’ top-weight is fancied to go one better. Delpotro took a step back in the right direction when third at Sedgefield and rates a key player, while track-and-trip winner Miss Fedora is weighted to go well.

totewin: Jolyjump

toteeachway: Delpotro

BLACKSAMSSENORITA impressed when making all in a maiden at Exeter recently and is hard to oppose after coasting to that 12-length success. A 7lb penalty shouldn’t be an issue and, as a half-sister to a couple of winners over this sort of trip, the additional yardage is a natural step. Dance The Moon is the pick of the rest, although Back In The Bay merits a betting check now returning after wind surgery.

totewin: Blacksamssenorita

toteeachway: Dance The Moon

3 The betting should be a good source of clues and while Ballela Blaze and Abbeyhill are likely to be key players, it could be worth taking a chance that PURE THEATRE is up to giving weight away all round. A respectable second to an in-form opponent at Wincanton on Monday, a repeat of that performance could suffice if this doesn’t come too quickly.

totewin: Pure Theatre

toteeachway: Ballela Blaze

LEADING SWOOP went in by over five lengths at Fontwell on his latest outing and the handicapper may have been kind to only put him up 6lb. The nine-year-old might only need to reproduce that level of form in order to complete a double. Dear Ralphy was well beaten into third in heavy conditions on his return to the larger obstacles, but this better ground should see him in a different light off 5lb lower. Delgany Monarch is the pick of the remainder. totewin: Leading Swoop

toteeachway: Dear Ralphy

NARRAGANSETT justified favouritism on his handicap debut in this sphere at Sandown last month and may have been worth more than the winning margin suggests. Neil Mulholland’s juvenile has only been put up 5lb for that victory and could improve for this step up in distance. Shengai Enki filled the runner-up spot at Wincanton last week and is fancied to go well again. Last-time-out C&D scorer Lumi Plugin also needs to be taken seriously.

totewin: Narragansett

toteeachway: Shengai Enki

Jorebel made the frame over 2m at Uttoxeter last weekend and this step up in distance could bring about more improvement so he has to be considered. However, the vote goes to LEAVE HER TO ME, who put a Huntingdon spill behind her when striking by a neck in a conditionals’ event at Hereford and escapes a penalty so is 4lb well-in. Macari completes the shortlist.

totewin: Leave Her To Me

toteeachway: Jorebel

USE OF SCREENS

It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy, and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery.

Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse.
