WELCOME
WELCOME TO
Dear Friends Of Punchestown,
On behalf of the Kildare Hunt Club and the entire team here at Punchestown, I’m absolutely delighted to welcome you here for an excellent days racing.
We are delighted to welcome back BetVictor as they sponsor two of our races today. Both races on the card are part of the €50,000 BetVictor Graduation Bonus Series. With just four qualifiers left in this series, all roads lead to the 2025 Punchestown Festival for the winners of these races. The first one to win a qualifier and a GR1 at the 2025 Punchestown Festival will be the lucky winners of a €50,000 bonus courtesy of BetVictor
Additionally, the support of our sponsors, industry bodies and indeed our jockeys, owners, trainers, clients, staff, officials and loyal supporters is greatly appreciated and I thank you for that. Afterall, it is this which enables us to stage such high-quality racing at Punchestown.
It’s hard to believe that the 2025 Punchestown Festival is just over 13 weeks away and preparations are in full swing for the flagship event of the Irish Jumps Season. If you’re planning to join us from Tuesday 29th April to Saturday 3rd May, make sure to get in touch with the team so we can help you plan your trip.
2025 Punchestown Club Membership, Gift Vouchers and Festival 2025 Tickets and Hospitality are all available to purchase in the main entrance building where any of the team would be delighted to assist you or online at punchestown.com
I look forward to welcoming you back for our Bank Holiday meeting on Monday 3rd February where we host one of our world-famous Cross-Country Chases and the brilliant stable staff within the Industry take centre stage in the 2025 Up The Yard Challenge race.
In the meantime, I wish you a very enjoyable day and sincerely thank you for your support.
Kindest Regards,

RACE SUMMARY
KARBAU, a wide-margin winner of a French bumper, is entitled to come on from his fourth place on hurdling debut at Naas last month. He holds a couple of possible engagements at the Cheltenham Festival for Willie Mullins. Sticwiththeprocess outran his odds when fifth at Naas and can build upon that. Mullins also saddles Zillow, who was fifth at Punchestown and fourth at Leopardstown. Further progress could be on the cards. Paul Collins was found to be lame when he was a beaten favourite in fourth at Thurles in November so he is not out of it, while Henry de Bromhead’s newcomer Adaliz is one for a market check.

RACE SUMMARY
OUT FOR A STROLL made the breakthrough at Limerick and has a shot at following up in receipt of plenty of weight from Total Look. Joseph O’Brien’s Churchill filly travelled well in the first-time cheekpieces to score at Limerick and the runner-up franked the form on his next start. Total Look has to shoulder top weight after a close third at Cheltenham. The form of his Navan victory is working out well and he is a significant threat. Slurricane is a consistent sort who should be in there pitching for prize money. He was a place ahead of Out For A Stroll when they were third and fourth respectively in Punchestown in November WIN: OUT FOR A STROLL EACH-WAY: Total Look

RACE SUMMARY
This contest features a very interesting clash between Familiar Dreams and MAUGHREEN. Familiar Dreams cut a swathe through bumpers when handled by Anthony McCann and her winning spree culminated in a Grade 3 success at the Punchestown Festival. She makes her hurdling debut for Gordon Elliott and is a very talented mare. Slight preference is for Maughreen, who represents Willie Mullins. She was impressive on bumper debut at this track just over a year ago when powering 11 lengths clear of her rivals. She met with a minor setback last season, but was the subject of a favourable report in a stable tour Clody Diamond’s point-to-point victory is working out nicely ahead of her track debut. WIN: MAUGHREEN EACH-WAY: Cloudy Diamond

RACE TIME
HANDICAPS EXPLAINED
After three races on the track, the handicap rating system knows enough about a horse to give them an official rating, which in turn determines how much weight they carry in future contests.
For example, if one horse is rated 100, and the other is rated 95, the horse rated five points more than the other will essentially carry an additional 5lb in weight. Should the horse carrying 5lb extra continue to beat horses rated inferior to them or amongst those with similar figures, that horse would rise up the class system to tackle harder races against better individuals.
The aim of a handicap race is to give every horse an equal chance of winning, and the plan is to have every horse crossing the finish line at the same time - which is surprisingly yet to happen!

RACE SUMMARY
PORT JOULAIN won a point-to-point and a Gowran bumper on testing ground and, having suffered an overreach when disappointing here on his hurdle debut, advertised his claims when third to The Enabler in a 2m4f Leopardstown maiden. The selection had Bossofthebrownies about two lengths behind in fourth on that occasion and may now have most to fear from Sermandzarak. The Gordon Elliott-trained gelding won the valuable Goffs Defender Bumper at the Festival here last April and made a pleasing start over hurdles when narrowly denied by Butch Cassidy over C&D. He was found to be coughing when disappointing subsequently at the Leopardstown Christmas meeting.

RACE SUMMARY
The Gavin Cromwell-trained MYWAYOFTHINKIN and Fenway Park both need to bounce back after disappointing last time and preference is for the former The well-bred son of Flemensfirth showed promise in bumpers before winning a 2m maiden when switched to hurdles here last spring and was found to be lame after pulling up on his reappearance in a Grade 3 at Navan. Fenway Park also won a maiden hurdle here last May but was let down by his jumping last month at Leopardstown. Bayrann gained reward for his consistency when taking a 2m Thurles maiden just before Christmas, while Goraibhmaithagat also won a Navan maiden over 2m and has plenty of scope for improvement. DID YOU KNOW
Punchestown is the only racecourse in Ireland that hosts cross-country racing over 35 obstacles styled on natural countryside fences, banks and hedges.
ABBREVIATIONS EXPLAINED
You will occasionally see letters after a horses form figures in the racecard today - for example 45-2301 CD BF But what do these actually mean and why are they shown?
C Stands for course and simply means that the horse has previously won here at Punchestown. You may have heard the phrase ‘Horses for courses ’ which implies that some horses perform better at certain racecourses. Therefore, previous winning form here at Punchestown may suggest that it will run well again today.
D Stands for distance and means that the horse has won over the same distance it is racing over today but at another racecourse So today’s distance should suit.
CD Stands for course and distance so not only has the horse previously won here at Punchestown but when doing so it also won over the same distance that it is racing over today. So, winning form over today’s course and distance may indicate that another strong performance is on the cards.
C D If there is gap between the C and the D it means that the horse has previously won here at Punchestown and also won over the same distance that it is racing over today but at another racecourse So today’s distance should suit and the horse will also be suited by the course
BF Stands for Beaten Favourite. Advises that a horse was well fancied in the past but despite being sent off favourite it failed to win. This can be off-putting to some punters especially if it is sent off favourite again today.
So now when you run through today’s runners and riders, you can identify which horses run well here at Punchestown and those which will be well suited by the distance that they are racing over.

RACE SUMMARY
BRIDIE’S BEAU was placed on both bumper starts for Paul Nicholls and kept on into fifth on his first handicap outing at Limerick last month. That 2m event has thrown up a couple of subsequent winners and the selection is bred to appreciate this longer trip Silas Marner has yet to score in 16 career starts but did give some encouragement when fourth to Duffys Hodey in a similar 2m4f Fairyhouse handicap earlier this month, while Klassman was placed a number of times in November before going off favourite when unseating rider three out here on New Year’s Eve. Mighty Soldier, Mywayorthehighway and Dolly Watkins are others to consider WIN: BRIDIE’S BEAU EACH-WAY:

BETTING EXPLAINED
The first thing to consider is which type of bet you wish to place. The most common is a win bet, where if your selection wins, you win. It is a no nonsense, on the nose bet and if you are lucky enough to pick a big-priced winner, you will receive a nice return. For example, place €5 to win on a 10-1 shot and you will receive €55 back, €50 winnings plus your €5 stake.
Another common bet is each-way. This is effectively two bets in one One bet is on your selection to win and the other is on it to place. Depending on the type of race and how many runners are in the race will determine how many places are offered The industry standard bookmaker place terms are as follows:
All races of less than 5 runners – win only All
DID YOU KNOW
Regardless of their actual date of birth (or foaling to use a racing term), all thoroughbred racehorses in the Northern hemisphere sharethesame birthday- 1st January. IntheSouthernhemisphere all horses share 1st August due to the fact that the seasons are reversed
HEADGEAR EXPLAINED
Have you ever wondered why some horses wear headgear? Is it just a fashion accessory? Most definitely not. Headgear is a useful tool in the armoury of a trainer and is used to aid a horse’s performance on the track.
BLINKERS - Blinkers can be used to aid concentration. A half cup placed behind the horses eye helps them to keep looking forwards to focus on the job at hand - winning their race!
VISORS - Very similar to blinkers but with a slit cut in the side of the cup, which enables a horse to see the other runners around them.
CHEEKPIECES - Sheepskin Cheekpieces work on a similar principle to Blinkers and Visors but allow a slightly better range of vision.
EYE SHIELDS - Eye Shields are a fine mesh that covers the entire eye but they do allow full vision.
HOOD - Covering the ears and head, a hood is used for horses that are easily spooked by crowds or noises, rather than for concentration purposes.
NOSEBAND - A Noseband is designed to restrict the field of vision and encourage a horse to focus on the race, usually lowering their head in the process.
TONGUE STRAP - Horses do not breathe through their mouth but even so, it can hamper speed and performance to have their mouth open or tongue flopping about. A tongue strap prevents this by keeping the tongue in place for the duration of the race.

RACE SUMMARY
A chance is taken on the fitness of THAT’S ME FINISHED, who left all previous known form behind when getting off the mark at Sligo last summer There is the potential for plenty more to come and he can pick up where he left off Point-to-point winner Master Of The Sums caught the eye when keeping on into third in a 2m3f Limerick maiden last month and any market move would be interesting on his handicap debut. Stellar Symphony has won twice at around 3m and still looks on a competitive mark, while Westernersunrise is another to note WIN: THAT’S ME FINISHED EACH-WAY: Master Of The Sums
