he headline act on day two of Royal Ascot is the Prince of Wales’s Stakes, the only Group 1 on the Wednesday run over 10 furlongs. Originally contested in 1862 over one mile and five furlongs, it is named after Queen Victoria’s son and disappeared from the programme in 1946 when the post of the Prince of Wales wasn’t held. It returned in 1968, a year before the current Prince of Wales’s investiture and appeared with a new distance that remains to this day. Upgraded to Group 1 status in 2000, it has been won twice by just three horses – Connaught, Mtoto and Muhtarram. In recent year’s high-class horses such as Poet’s Word and Crystal Ocean have won the race and it remains one of the best middle-
distance races in the calendar. Three Group 2 races also feature on Wednesday, with the Queen Mary Stakes for two-year-old fillies over five furlongs getting proceedings underway. American trainer Wesley Ward has saddled the winner four times, including Campanelle last year. He is likely to have a strong hand again in what is always an open race. The Queen’s Vase is a valuable staying prize for three-year-olds over one mile and six furlongs. Estimate and Stradivarius have collected this race before going on to Gold Cup glory and this test of stamina often reveals some very nice staying horses for the future. The Duke Of Cambridge Stakes offers a Group 2 opportunity for older filles and mares having been added
to the programme in 2004 as part of an industry-wide initiative to encourage connections to keep fillies in training. The first handicap on the card is one of the biggest betting heats of the week with a full field of 30 expected to line up for the Royal Hunt Cup over the straight mile. It will be a tale of luck, drama and no doubt a dramatic finish as is often the case. The concluding race of the day is new for this year, the Kensington Palace Stakes, a handicap over the Old Mile course for four year olds and upwards fillies. It has been permanently added to the card as part of the expanded programme and is named after Kensington Palace, which has been a residence for Members of Royal Family since the 17th century.

hanks to a combination of factors: the Royal presence, the top-class racing, and the prestige and glamour, Royal Ascot has become something of an international icon. The essence of Englishness. But it isn’t just people that travel from all over the world to come to Ascot in June. Horses do, too. In 2016, a mare named Lady Aurelia made the journey across the Atlantic to race at Ascot’s Royal Meeting. Bred by Stonestreet Stables in Kentucky, by Scat Daddy out of D'Wildcat Speed, she won her first race over four and a half furlongs on Keeneland’s dirt track by seven and a half lengths – setting a track record at the same time. “We always knew she was special from the time we broke her at the farm

a nose in a dramatic finish. In 2018 Lady Aurelia had one more crack at Royal Ascot, hoping to make it an annual celebration. Despite having been beaten in her last two US races, she still had the support of her huge fanbase, starting the race as the 2-1 favourite. Sadly third-time-lucky didn’t apply in this case, and against some tough opposition including Battaash and Blue Point, she finished a respectable 7th. On the 18th of July 2018 it was announced that Lady Aurelia had been retired from her racing career. Having won five of her 10 races and earnt over £600,000 in prizemoney, no one could deny it was a career to be proud of. But it was far from the end for her breeder, the Royal Ascot Insider

Barbara Banke. In November 2018, Banke’s Stonestreet Farms bought back Lady Aurelia in full at the Fasig-Tipton sales for $7.5 million, buying out her partner Peter Leidel. “Since 2005 we’ve been building a broodmare band based on worldclass pedigree and performance attributes”, says Banke on her decision to buy back the mare. “This isn’t a static process; it continually evolves through the purchase of top-class young performers and proven producers, as well as high-caliber retirees from the racing stable. Lady Aurelia was one of the leading two-year-old fillies of her generation, so certainly fit the bill.” The question, then, was how to proceed with her new career as a brood @ascotracecourse |
mare. “we're trying to figure out if we go American or European first”, said Banke in November when she bought out her partners. But the decision was then made to send her to Curlin; Stonestreet’s dual American Horse of the Year. “Curlin was incomparable as a racehorse, and he is incomparable as a stallion”, says Banke, explaining their decision. “He brought us much excitement when he raced in the Stonestreet silks and has also been fabulous for our breeding program. He passes on soundness, durability and classic-distance potential. He gets both great colts and fillies, and they are in demand at the sales.” And in fact, Stonestreet-bred, Curlin-sired Malathaat

Banke says: “Though we do keep some to race we are primarily a commercial yearling breeder. We’ll make sales decisions on current foals next summer.” Perhaps she might retain a stake in the foal, as she did with his dam.

Sectional Timing System
S
ectional timing and tracking data has been available from all Flat races at Ascot since the start of the 2019 Flat season thanks to our partnership with Longines.
The Longines Timing System in operation at Ascot is one of the most sophisticated tracking systems in the world. It is based on GPS and chip technology with a transmitter located in the saddle cloth of each horse providing instant data on the exact position of horses with accuracy down to five centimetres. As you will see from the data, the nature of the systems, which are in use across the world, means there will always be a slight difference to the timings provided by the official photo finish times which are based on the nose of the horse rather than the saddle cloth. This difference is normally less than 0.2 seconds. The data does not therefore replace the photo finish times but it provides an additional tool to understand the performance of each horse and sophisticated analysis of every race. Statistics

collected for every horse include: • Finishing position • Running order at all points in the race • Race time • Distance travelled • Sectional times for each furlong of the race • Top speed • Fastest furlong • Last three furlongs finishing time New for this year the system is also now collecting stride data and able to illustrate how many strides a horse takes per second and also how large those strides are. This fascinating new world of data of horse racing will help to develop the analysis provided by media and broadcasters while also taking the sport to new audiences in a world where everybody is more and more interested in data. All the data from the Longines Sectional Timing System will be available to download after each day of Royal Ascot here www.ascot.co.uk/longinessectional-timing-at-ascot

Longines and the E
L
ongines and the equestrian world have enjoyed a long history of close ties with their relentless passion and shared values. Tradition, Elegance, Performance and the quest for exploits: an unwavering commitment that dates back the nineteenth century, only a few years after the inception of the company’s factory in the Swiss village of Saint-Imier. Today, this passion is more alive than ever, with the brand’s presence in major equestrian institutions and events across the world. This time, Longines shows its firm dedication to the highly anticipated meeting in horseracing - Royal Ascot. Longines’ passion for the equestrian world dates back to 1869, when the brand created its first equestrian pocket watch found to date. Not long after, in 1878, Longines developed a famous chronograph movement, fitted in a case engraved with a jockey and his mount.
Seen on the American racetracks since the late nineteenth century, this type of timepiece proved extremely popular among jockeys and horse-lovers, as it enabled its user to time performances to the second. Designed in the workshops of the factory in Saint-Imier, these first creations marked the beginning of Longines’ very early involvement in the equestrian world. The name of Longines thus very quickly became associated with sports timekeeping. While the brand was constantly pushing the boundaries of precision, its involvement in the equestrian world progressively intensified. In 1912, a further step was taken when Longines concluded its first official partnership with a show jumping event in Lisbon, Portugal, marking

Equestrian World the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship with the discipline. Throughout the years, countless equestrian competitions enjoyed the qualities and reliability of the chronograph calibres and automated instruments that Longines had developed to time sports performances. As a result of its legitimacy and expertise, Longines’ involvement in equestrian sports today includes Flat racing, show jumping, dressage, driving and eventing disciplines. Today, Longines’ engagement with the equestrian world has been further enhanced by its dedicated support for major equestrian institutions such as the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI), the International Federation of
Horseracing Authorities (IFHA) and the International Federation of Gentlemen and Lady Riders (FEGENTRI). With these partnerships, Longines permeates all levels of equestrianism by presenting important awards in flat racing and jumping competitions such as the Longines World’s Best Racehorse and Horse Race Awards and the Longines World’s Best Jockey Award. The brand’s presence at the pinnacle of the sport is often highlighted by its presence at the most demanding competitions of equestrianism, such as Royal Ascot, that require the highest level of precision and excellence.

I have covered many sports including whippet racing and cycle speedway, NFL and many more but racing has always been the number one. Shooting Royal Ascot is always a long day but the rewards are great, apart from the class racing there are so many different aspects of the day that are worth photographing, fashion, celebrities, the whole social scene and the Royal procession to name but a few. There are so many great moments in a week that it’s hard to pick a favourite one, I like to see the not so big names winning as it seems to mean so much more to them.

n a world where technology has come to be central to everything we do, it is notable that ‘horsepower’ remains the globally recognised unit of power. Though cars may long have outstripped horses on the spec sheet, the horse remains a universal symbol of finely tuned speed and force. It is no surprise therefore that the emblem of Porsche features a rearing black horse, instantly capturing the imagination of those with a need for speed while also referring to the crest of Stuttgart, the German city where Porsche’s headquarters are located. No horse embodies power and majesty as strongly as the thoroughbred. Like the smoothly sculpted body of a Porsche, a racehorse’s harmonious outward appearance conceals an immensely powerful engine. Harnessing this power is an intense experience for any jockey, requiring the same delicate blend of decisiveness and dexterity demanded of the world’s elite racing drivers. Multiple Group Onewinning rider Tom Marquand puts these skills to work every day in guiding half-tons of horseflesh to victory against some of the very best in the business. As the son of a rally driver, he is better placed than most to appreciate the comparisons that may exist between tackling Swinley Bottom or Silverstone. We spoke to him about how he gets his engine revved for racing and the incomparable rush of roaring past the winning line in front. What physical qualities does it take to be a great jockey? Primarily you have to be able to do the weight. Typically at places like Royal Ascot we tend to push our weight that little bit further as the races are more competitive and the prize money is higher. So it’s worth it for those days. In general of course we have to be very fit and people probably underestimate the strength element of it. Strength can be quite tricky to manage as you’re trying to control your weight and at the same time keep up pound-for-pound strength. What mental qualities does it take to be a great jockey? You definitely have to be resilient. You are subject to a lot of judgement and criticism. We win at a strike rate of about 15% on average. That’s a lot of losing to take. Also, I haven’t met a successful the Royal Ascot Insider

jockey that isn’t extremely driven because it is a relentless life. We are up extremely early, working extremely hard, and doing the weight, so if you’re not driven you just wouldn’t be able to get up in the morning and do it. How much is natural ability and how much is hard work? Like anything there is an element of natural ability, but I’m not the biggest believer in natural-born talent. Obviously if you’re six foot five you’re not going to be a jockey and if you’re five foot two you’re not going to be a world-class 100m sprinter, but talent can only get you so far. For anyone anywhere near the top of their game in any sport, talent starts to become less significant when you get to the upper echelons. What is your routine on raceday? How do you prepare physically and mentally? @ascotracecourse | #RoyalAscot
35
Today I got up at 5.10am, went to William Haggas’s to ride out. I was done there at about 10.15am. After that I would normally go home where I have a Wattbike. I’d normally do anything from
twenty minutes to over an hour on the bike, then have a sweat in the hot tub to lose the rest of the weight, and then head racing. So that hour and a half after riding out is important to knock the weight off, but also mentally it puts you in the zone. I would also run quite a lot when I want to mix it up from the bike. That weight-making process really serves to get you in racing mode. How do you keep fit during the offseason? We don’t really have an off-season to be honest. With all-weather racing through the winter now, it only backs off a touch. If I stay in Britain during the winter, I am still riding six days a week so it doesn’t feel like a break. If I go to Australia for a couple of months in the winter, I use that as my break. I ride three of four days a week over there and it’s a bit like active recovery from the rest of the year. I find a couple of months there does me the world of good and just doing something different reinvigorates your mind.

What victory in your career has given you the greatest thrill? Why? It has to be Addeybb in this year’s Queen Elizabeth Stakes over in Australia. It was the first big winner that I rode over there where there were crowds. I’m not sure if the crowds were one hundred percent of the reason it felt special, but there was a lot of build-up and press attention with Addeybb versus Verry Elegant. She had beaten him on his return in the Ranvet Stakes after him beating her twice last year. When he won the emotion and relief after all the build-up was pretty insane. Having a first Royal Ascot winner last year with Who Dares Wins was brilliant too. He’s a horse that has played a big part in my career and it was really nice to get the first Royal Ascot win on him. It was just a shame not to have crowds there.
horse racing. He often compares them. In fact, I think racing is a lot more like other competitive sports than people might think. There’s the tactics, positioning, and awareness of what is around you. And then there’s the business side too. You are riding these horses that are worth millions of pounds and the margin for error is extremely small. So decisionmaking and dealing with high pressure are there across all racing sports too. If you weren’t a jockey, what other sport would you like to practice professionally?
There are a lot. My Dad drove competitively when he was younger and he has always been amazed by the similarities between motorsport and
There was one point when I was a kid that skiing was a big option. Whether anything would have come of it I don’t know, but we always went skiing every year and it was something I grew up with. Then there was a decision to be made when I was around 13 whether it was going to be kicking on with the pony racing or skiing. Fortunately Mum and Dad pushed the racing side of it, which was bold of them considering they knew nothing about racing, but it was the right decision.

he 2021 Dress Code requires a little more thought than usual. Or does it? Had a pre-loved, conscious fashion theme been tabled for a dress-to-impress event even five years ago, options would have felt somewhat limited. Charity shop scouring for something really special may have felt like it required a crack-level of expertise. Clothing rental was only just getting started. Of course, we all have wardrobes full of gems, but our shopping habits were at peak consumption until quite recently. To not buy something new might have felt a shame, perhaps even inhibited us from feeling our best.
Not anymore. We’ve all reframed a bit, haven’t we? And not just because of the pandemic, a period that saw many of us sifting through our rails, emptying cupboards and wondering how much we really needed (especially when we had nowhere to go). More so, because the options available to us when it comes to event wardrobe planning have changed. By which I mean to say, they have the Royal Ascot Insider

diversified - and improved. Now, it is not only the outfit (or label sewn into the back of it) that makes a statement, but where it came from. Pre-loved, rented or eco-friendly are the watchwords this summer. Put it this way: if the Prime Minister’s bride can rent her wedding dress to walk down the aisle, you can certainly do the same in the Royal Enclosure. All that being said, shopping consciously can still feel less than straightforward. It takes a bit of education (don’t stop reading! I promise

The fundamental truth is that in order to shop better, we must simply shop less. If you really want to buy something, you should envisage yourself wearing it more than thirty times. If you are buying something to wear just once, don’t. That’s what the rental platforms are for, on which more anon. Another tool to use is more deeply considering the price tag of what you have your eye on.

There are too many brands that stick an ‘eco-friendly’ label onto their clothes as a marketing tool and so many places to buy second hand that it can feel overwhelming. As for wardrobe rental, the concept can feel a bit alien - what, heaven forfend, happens if you spill wine on the dress?
Yes, the label might say ‘sustainable’, but can you be sure? Buying a jolly dress from H&M’s Conscious range might just trump a Zara purchase, but is really just the lesser of two evils. You can’t make any item of clothing cheaply or on a mass scale without sacrificing ethical standards somewhere in the production line.

on a budget. It is fine for me to recommend Stella McCartney as a green label - and I do. She was doing sustainability when we all thought the word translated as ‘hemp’ - but few of us have the desire to spend that sort of money on clothes. This is where the rental platforms come in. Let’s start with Carrie Johnson (nee Symonds)’s pick. My Wardrobe HQ hit headlines over the May bank holiday when it was revealed that she had rented her wedding dress from them. But it comes highly recommended in fashion circles, too. “My Wardrobe HQ has everything you need,” says personal stylist Annabel Hodin (annabelhodin. com). “Outfits, hats, bags, jewellery - and it all gets delivered to you.”
one here for £35 a day. Another rental name to know is Hurr, which now has an excellent concession in Selfridges. This is where I am planning to stock my wedding guest wardrobe from this summer. Gone are the days of buying a new Rixo dress everytime a friend says, ‘I do’ - I can just borrow one of Hurr’s for £40 a day. It also offers hats, shoes, handbags and hair accessories, plus damage protection and next day delivery. By the time September rolls around, I hope to have worked my way through a rail of designers I could never afford to buy myself: The Vampire’s Wife, Alessandra Rich and Emilia Wickstead for starters.
The platform is fronted by ex-Topshop and Whistles honcho Jane Shepherdson, which speaks volumes. It hosts over five hundred designers that are checked for authenticity and you can rent items for between four and fourteen days. If a Stella McCartney frock is your thing, you can get
Other good outlets to know in this arena are Endless Wardrobe (for rental and the purchase of second hand pieces), Selfridges (from which you can now rent designer outfits) and, on another of Hodin’s expert recommendations, Dress2-impress.com: the only hat hire outlet at Royal Ascot. free returns and a full refund if you don’t end up wearing what you rent. I’m struggling to find a reason for you not to use them. Perhaps, though, you get a buzz from a charity shop or vintage find. After all, ‘pre-loved’ might be a new term, but it’s not a new idea. You just need to know where to look. “It always pays to think about postcode,” says second-hand aficionado and How To Break Up With Fast Fashion author Lauren Bravo on where one might dig up an Ascotworthy outfit. “It's a cliché but the more illustrious neighbourhoods do tend to have the fancier labels and the more formal stock. I love the Mary's Living and Giving shops, founded by Mary Portas for Save The Children, which always have a beautifully curated selection and seem to attract really high-quality pieces. They sell online too.” She also namechecks Oxfam, Depop (ask your nearest teenager on that one), Ebay and Thrift+ for further online investigation, where it's easier to narrow down your options by size, colour and type of clothing.

Celebrating the success of

hose horses often came to the fore at Royal Ascot with the likes of Kingman, Byword, Banks Hill, Danehill and of course the incomparable Frankel carrying his colours to victory.
Prince Khalid Abdullah owned 41 Royal Ascot winners in total, starting with Abeer in the 1979 Queen Mary Stakes, his first Group winner. That was just two years after he purchased his first yearlings which kick-started his plans for @ascotracecourse |
what would become an international breeding operation. The Royal Ascot winners flowed fairly regularly from the early 1980s, including a remarkable six at the 1989 Royal Meeting. They included several of the highest profile races with Warning in the Queen Anne Stakes, Two Timing in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes and Danehill in the then Cork and Orrery Stakes (now the Diamond Jubilee Stakes).

Frankel
Those three races were not run at Group 1 level at the time though and his first top-level success at Royal Ascot came in 2001 when Banks Hill, trained by Andre Fabre, won the Coronation Stakes. Fabre was also responsible for Byword, who won the 2010 Prince of Wales’s Stakes, leading home a memorable 1-2 in the Group 1 feature race on the Wednesday for Prince Khalid with Twice Over second. In 2011 he was Champion Owner for the third and final time helped of course by Frankel in his threeyear-old career under the guidance of Sir Henry Cecil. Having blown the field away in the 2,000 Guineas he arrived at Royal Ascot for the St James’s Palace Stakes as a red-hot favourite to extend his unbeaten run to a perfect seven. All seemed to be going to plan as Tom Queally sent him to the front and he was six lengths clear with two furlongs to run. It turned out to be a dramatic finish though as Zoffany stayed on strongly and got to within three parts of a length of Frankel who just held on.

He returned a year later as a four-year-old to contest the Queen Anne Stakes and produced one of the most jaw-dropping performances ever seen at Royal Ascot. Positioned perfectly behind his pace maker, Bullet Train, Queally edged Frankel to the front from the halfway point before he opened up in stunning style to produce a brilliant 11 length victory. Frankel continues to have an impact on the sport through his progeny and he recorded a first Royal Ascot winner as a sire when Without Parole won the St James’s Palace Stakes in 2018
James Doyle. Retired at three, Kingman has since produced three Royal Ascot winners himself in Palace Pier as well as Sangarius and Calyx in the Juddmonte colours, so his legacy lives on and will continue to grow.

In total, Prince Khalid recorded more than 500 Group level victories around the world, including 118 at Group 1 level with five of those coming at Royal Ascot. His colours continue to be carried under the Juddmonte name and no doubt there will be many more Royal Ascot victories to celebrate.

Star Quality Five Michelin-starred chef Simon Rogan returns to the Royal Enclosure. Here, he explains what’s on this year’s menu – and how lockdown led to a new enterprise
I
f you’re looking for perfection from Royal Ascot, placing your lunch choice in the hands of a chef whose restaurant group is the only one in the world to hold green Michelin stars in different continents is likely the safest bet you’ll make all day. Simon Rogan, the chef renowned for his love of foraging and seasonal, organic ingredients, is returning to the Royal Enclosure, and race-goers savvy enough to have reserved a table at his eponymous restaurant can expect some sensational food. “We’re looking to impart as much flavour as we can into the experience,” Rogan explains. “Ascot’s something that we take very seriously. It’s a week we look forward to in the year, very much. So we try to really push the boat out.”
the Royal Ascot Insider
@ascot |
@ascotracecourse |
What does ‘pushing the boat out’ mean for Rogan? It means offering a type of truffle pudding – as a snack. Glazed in birch sap – “nice, and sticky, and sweet”– the dish is topped with grated aged Berkswell cheese and a vinegar gel made with stout. The other ‘snack’ consists of a smoked cod roe and broccoli tart, with a smoked cod mousse and shaved broccoli florets. Then, to the starters. Cured Scottish salmon with horseradish, radish and oysters, and a vegetarian dish made from spring bean succulents with a summery garnish. For the mains, there will be Lakeland beef sirloin, served with roasted lettuce, black garlic puree and pickled shimeji mushrooms, accompanied by an oxtail ragu, crowned with potato mousse. There’s something for fish lovers too; Cornish turbot, plated with mussels, broccoli and a loveage sauce, accented by Rogan’s “own blend” of caviar. Pudding puts gooseberries front and centre, sweetened with sweet cecily – a herb prominent in the Lake District where Rogan resides. “It’s a very nice, aniseed flavour and it gives a lovely sweetness to the gooseberries,” he explains. “With that we’re going to serve a raw milk ice cream and we’re going to have components of elderflower on there as well – so a light, floral end to the meal.” (Although a strawberry tart petit fours will follow on from the grand finale – because who doesn’t love an encore?) “[We use] British, seasonal ingredients, a lot of them organic [and] most of them we’re bringing down from our farm up in the Lake District,” Rogan explains. “So @ascotracecourse | #RoyalAscot

real quality ingredients, cooked with a lot of flair.” “We’re there to give the customers of Ascot a taste of what we do,” he adds. So, what is it that Rogan does? Well, in addition to producing award-winning food, the answer is: a lot. L’Enclume is Rogan’s flagship restaurant, located in the village of Cartmel in Cumbria, which serves up dishes made largely from ingredients grown in its nearby farm. It has Michelin stars – two to be precise – and also boasts a coveted green Michelin star, in recognition of its dedication to sustainability.
lockdown forced all of the UK’s restaurants to close, one might imagine he took some time out to relax, but on the contrary. While initially it appeared all his team’s hard work over the years “seemed like it was going to count for nothing” he says, shutting his kitchens ultimately paved the way for his next venture: Simon Rogan At Home.
“As soon as we knew we were going to have to close, we launched straight into an early version of the At Home range,” Rogan explains. “We had a lot of produce on the farm that was ready to be used and the restaurants weren’t going to be open, so what “It’s become a bit of an institution could we do with it?” and it’s been a breeding ground

Elsewhere in Cartmel, diners can find Aulis Cartmel (a six-seater cost to residents in the neighbourhood. “The small profit we made on [that] chef’s table) and also Rogan & Co – the was there to give out free meals to the informal, sister restaurant to L’Enclume. elderly, the vulnerable [and] the local There is also Aulis in London, run by Oli essential workers,” he said. BBC’s Great British Menu), who heads up Rogan’s two restaurants in Hong Kong as well – Aulis Hong Kong and Roganic (which has both a single and a green Michelin star). And finally, there is Henrock – the restaurant attached to Linthwaite House hotel in the Lake District. So yes, Rogan does a lot. When 54

The range developed from there. It now includes three-course ‘cook at home’ meals delivered to customers’ doors; ‘chefs at home’ experiences, where chefs from Rogan’s restaurants visit guests’ houses to cook one of their menus; and luxury hampers. “It’s opened new avenues for us with some retail and some deals with third parties as well,” Rogan @ascotracecourse | #RoyalAscot

reveals. “It was unlikely a year ago, but it’s been quite a bizarre year. Who would have thought that we would branch into this and [it would be] such a successful area of our business now?” With other top UK restaurants offering similar ‘cook at home’ meal kits, it seems this new style of high-end hospitality might be around for some time. Rogan is confident it will be, in any case. In spite of lockdown lifting, “there’s still a demand for it,” he confirms, but adds, inrestaurant dining isn’t going anywhere.

@ascot |
@ascotracecourse |
It’s no mean feat for a man who owes his success entirely to hard graft and determination. Rogan was born in Southampton and developed his love for cooking as a child, making creations out of the “weird and wonderful” ingredients his father – a fruit and vegetable wholesaler – used to bring home. In his early teens, while still at school, he found a part-time job at a Greek restaurant which earned him £24 a week – “a fortune in those days, I was the richest lad in my year!” he remembers. Such was his passion, he left school at 16 to work there full-time and also attended catering college. There, his competitive spirit was “ignited”. He realised he wanted to be a better cook than his peers and left the restaurant

to work as an apprentice at the New Forest’s Rhinefield House Hotel. His boss there was Paul Norman – a chef with 12 years’ experience at The Savoy. “He gave me the most amazing, classical grounding to then go off and either choose a more modern approach or find somewhere similar,” Rogan says.
He ventured out on his own in 2002, opening L’Enclume in Cartmel after a friend alerted him to the site. In 2005, it was awarded its first Michelin star, and in 2013, its second. To date, Rogan holds four Michelin stars across his restaurant group, not including his prestigious green accolades.

Embraer Praetor 600 Combines Technology, Efficiency and Performance
The new Embraer Praetor 600 doesn’t just raise the bar for performance in the super-midsize class of private aircraft, it redefines what a super-midsize aircraft should be.

F
rom its intercontinental range and smooth fly-by-wire controls to its ergonomic seating and ultra-quiet environment, the Praetor 600 provides passengers with the comforts of a large cabin aircraft in a more agile package. This agility is a key differentiator for the Praetor 600. While the aircraft is equipped with the same Honeywell HTF7500E engines as its predecessor, the Legacy 500, Embraer added a software update to the Praetor 600 that boosts thrust by nearly 500 pounds. The Praetor 600 also features a new winglet design that increases wingspan and improves airflow. When combined with advancements in the cockpit, these power and structural upgrades give the Praetor 600 exceptional short-field performance. That means it can go to places other super-midsize aircraft can’t go to, including some of the world’s most challenging airports in city centers and mountainous regions such as London City or La Mole in South of France. This ultimately puts passengers closer to their destinations and substantially reduces transit time. No matter where they are flying, Praetor 600 passengers benefit from Embraer’s Active Turbulence Reduction, the first system of its kind ever fitted to a super-midsize aircraft. Active Turbulence Reduction is made possible because of the Praetor 600’s full fly-by-wire controls. It automatically senses and dampens the effects of turbulence, providing a smoother ride that is more conducive to relaxing or working. The Active Turbulence Reduction system also helps make the Praetor 600 the most fuel-efficient aircraft in its class. The Praetor 600 is so efficient that it can
fly nonstop from London to Muscat or New York to Geneva on one tank of fuel, something that cannot be done in other super-midsize aircraft like the Bombardier Challenger 350. This fuel efficiency also allows passengers to fly knowing they have chosen an industry leader in sustainability for their travel needs. In fact, Embraer designed the Praetor 600 using its DIPAS (Integrated Development of Environmentally Sustainable Products) methodology, which evaluates a product’s sustainability for its entire lifecycle. Under this programme, technologies that reduce fuel consumption, carbon dioxide emissions and noise are favoured for further development. In the cabin, the Praetor 600 is equipped with class-exclusive Viasat Kaband and Gogo AVANCE L5 high-speed Wi-Fi to keep passengers connected to the world below them. Also, classexclusive in the Praetor 600 is Embraer’s touchscreen Upper Tech Panel that displays flight information and cabin management controls in an elegant, unobtrusive manner. Flexjet clients who fly on the new Praetor 600 can relax in a custom Red Label by Flexjet cabin knowing that an additional HEPA filter removes 99.97 percent of all particles in the air, including bacteria, viruses and fungi. These exceptional features and capabilities make the Praetor 600 a truly unique, groundbreaking aircraft. It rises above everything else in the traditional super-midsize category, while also offering better short field performance than large cabin aircraft. That’s why Flexjet is proud to make this aircraft available as part of our European fleet.

He made his final racecourse appearance in early 2014 and was then retired to the Godolphin rehoming centre. A powerful ex-racehorse and a para rider might not seem the most suitable - or, for that matter, the safest combination. But with calm and careful handling, the pair have gone on to form a formidable partnership, becoming national para dressage champions and representing Great Britain.
“though embarrassingly, I didn’t know how famous he was!” Julie recalls that “Barney”, as he is now known, impressed her with “an absolutely stunning trot”, the first time she sat on him. “I felt as though I needed to pinch myself,” she recalls, “though embarrassingly, I didn’t know how famous he was!” A retired RAF Wing Commander, Julie is a classified Grade IV para rider, following an accident that resulted in limited use of her right hand. For an ex-racehorse to “accept a different leg aid, a different sport, takes time and quiet patience,” Julie stresses. Nevertheless, Namibian “picked up the challenging dressage stuff quickly and we ‘played’ with lots of lateral work, stretching and bending.” Julie was also aware of the horse’s body changing as his musculature adapted to the new sport. She is a great fan of the “immense capability for versatility” of former racehorses 74

and speaks eloquently of her relationship with “Barney”, of “the joy of growing together, helping him excel in a second career and forever being astonished at his ability and kindness”. The horse that once galloped past the winning post to the roar of the Royal Ascot Grandstand now adores an audience of a different kind. He “lifts” at competitions and puts “a proper swagger in his walk; I swear he @ascotracecourse |
actually smiles at the gallery when people clap,” says Julie. He also boasts the party piece of being able to “count” with one foreleg - notably in front of an international judge in his first appearance for Great Britain, Julie recalls ruefully. hether it be the horsebox driver, the stable lad or lass or the stud hand, racing could not happen without them.
Across this wonderful five days of racing we highlight just a few of the industry's personalities and they share their favourite Royal Ascot moments. The Watership Down Stud has been responsible for the early days of many winners and the home to some of the United Kingdoms most exceptional broodmares - Terry Doherty has been at the helm of this successful breeding entity since the start. With over 40 years in the breeding industry Terry knows more about the breeding and care of the wonderful thoroughbred breed than most and his love of the horses and the satisfaction of seeing some of his young charges succeed is just part of what keeps Terry in the industry. How long have you worked in the racing industry? Just over 40 years. Where did it all begin? I started at Garrowby in 1979 for the Earl of Halifax under John and Patricia Johnson, who were lovely people and gave me a good grounding in this industry. What has been your favourite Royal Ascot memory so far from one of the stud’s offspring? It has to be The Fugue. She holds the course record for the Prince of Wales’s Stakes and she beat Magician and Treve that was a big moment for a small stud. Do you have a favourite broodmare?
Yes, it is hard to choose but I would have to say Dar Re Mi these days, but her mother was also a gorgeous mare. The hours are very long, and the dedication needed is unlike any other job, what keeps you in the industry? Working with these beautiful animals, especially in the summer.
the Royal Ascot Insider
@ascot |
@ascotracecourse |
The favourite moment of your career so far? Darara producing back-to-back Dubai Sheema Classic winners, Rewilding and Dar Re Mi. It was a lovely moment and very special. Do you always try and follow the progeny of the stud? Yes, we always look down the pedigree first before looking at the names - we especially look for the dam. What is the best bit about your job? In June and July when everything is turned out and I can walk around the paddocks talking to all the horses.

2020: CAMPANELLE (IRE) 2 9 0 Frankie Dettori 9-2 (Wesley A Ward) 18 ran
Race Summary: Wesley Ward has won four runnings of this Group 2 event since 2009 and in the speedy Belmont Park winner Twilight Gleaming he has another very lively contender. Aidan O’Brien, on the other hand, has yet to train a Queen Mary winner, but in the imposing and blue-blooded YET he surely has a good opportunity to put that right. The selection made a deep impression when edging out Orinoco River at Dundalk. In a strongly contested renewal, Artos, Desert Dreamer, Get Ahead and Nymphadora are all respected but the best each-way claims may be held by Quick Suzy who boasts a useful level of form and may be suited by dropping back to 5f. Race Predictor: NYMPHADORA QUICK SUZY YET

The Queen’s Vase (Group 2) - continued
Race Summary: Mark Johnston and Aidan O’Brien have both won this race on seven occasions but with Johnston not having added to his tally since 2014, during which time O’Brien has won it four times. Dancing King is a serious player for the former, with Wordsworth looking tailormade for the race and probably just ahead of Arturo Toscanini among the Ballydoyle runners. However, watch out also for Jessica Harrington’s TAIPAN, who could be a revelation now that he moves up from 1m2f, and he gets the vote in front of Wordsworth. Ruling, Kemari and Stowell also demand a mention. Race Predictor: DANCING KING

Race Summary: Lady Bowthorpe holds leading claims on the back of her excellent second to Palace Pier in the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes at Newbury. If there is a negative today it’s the possible lack of a strong pace for this hold-up mare, and at the forecast prices it’s worth siding with VALERIA MESSALINA instead. Her short-head second to One Master in the Group 3 Oak Tree Stakes at Glorious Goodwood last year is form that reads well in today’s context and the soft to heavy ground excuses her reappearance defeat at The Curragh. Agincourt was second in this race last year and is next on the list, with the very lightly raced Double Or Bubble another interesting contender. Group 1 winner Champers Elysees needs to bounce back from two substandard efforts, while Queen Power impressed at York but the drop back to 1m may not be ideal for her. Race Summary: Lord North was imperious in this race last year and in the Dubai Turf in March, although he reportedly bled in the latter. He will be hard to beat if in that form but last season wasn’t all plain sailing for him and he faces a top-quality rival today in LOVE, assuming she reappears in the form that saw her sweep all before her against her own sex last term. Armory, also trained by Aidan O’Brien, looks their most plausible threat, although My Oberon has improved this season and Audarya did so last year. Race Summary: It remains to be seen how the draw will pan out but MATTHEW FLINDERS (nap) gets the verdict and Oisin Murphy has options from stall 15. The selection should settle better than last time and remains the type to win a race of this nature. Second choice is Magical Morning, who ties in with Matthew Flinders on Doncaster form last September and is open to further progress. Finest Sound is short in the betting for good reason and he has to be feared, while Astro King and Haqeeqy are other obvious players. Inevitably, several others also have possibilities in a very hot handicap.

Race Summary: The hat-trick-seekers Tipperary Sunset and Dig Two are key form contenders, along with Woodcote runner-up Flaming Rib who looks interesting on his drop back in trip. Aidan O’Brien’s Amalfi Coast is respected, while Richard Hannon’s Armor recorded a good first RPR when scoring at Doncaster and has plenty of scope for progress on his second start. However, there are also two fascinating US contenders in the line-up in Wesley Ward’s pair Golden Bell and RUTHIN, and the vote goes to the latter. She looked inexperienced on turf at Keeneland in April but still managed to win by 6l under a positive ride and that was a striking debut. Race Predictor: KABOO GOLDEN BELL ARMOR

Race Summary: She didn’t give her running last time but MOSTLY appeared to have a bit left in the tank when quickening to win a 1m AW handicap on her seasonal debut in March and, given the stamina in her pedigree, there is hope that today’s stiffer test at this trip can unlock significant further improvement. She gets the verdict ahead of Stunning Beauty, who bounced back to form with a win this month and is still lightly raced. Lights On and Dreamloper are others to consider, having fought out a tight finish on the straight 1m here last month. Race Predictor: LIGHTS ON PHOLAS SEPARATE
