Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen and welcome to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse. Incredibly we have already reached the half-way point for our season, although the first four fixtures were Behind Closed Doors it’s been wonderful to have racegoers back with us of late and the weather has been very kind to us. Fingers crossed for more of the same this evening. Our feature race this evening is the ‘Ripon, Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse Handicap’ at 8 o’clock and although just the six runners go to post it looks a competitive heat. The versatile Bollin Joan was a dual winner here last season and bids to keep the prize in Yorkshire along with Skycutter and Leopardo with Kettle Hill, Ridgeway and Urban Violet bidding to take the spoils south. Thanks to our sponsors this evening, NE-Bet, Titanium Racing Club, Betzone and Sky Sports Racing. We are very grateful for their support. Thanks also to all Owners joining us this evening, we wish you the very best of luck not only tonight but for the rest of the season and beyond. Of course, there are still some restrictions on course so please respect those for the safety and comfort of yourself and others. We hope you have a fantastic evening with us and we hope to welcome you back later in the season. Many thanks and very best regards. JAMES HUTCHINSON Managing Director

TODAY’S TIPS RACE
1
El Maga found it tough in Group 3 company at Royal Ascot but the Redcar debut winner can easily be given another chance, while Ye Gud Thing brings plenty of experience to the table and will arrive full of confidence following her breakthrough success at Yarmouth. However, RIVERSWAY overcame the worst of the draw to make a winning introduction at Carlisle three weeks ago and could take some stopping in her bid to complete the double.
WIN: RIVERSWAY
RACE
2
Providing the ground doesn’t get too testing, ARRANMORE will prove tough to beat. He posted three solid efforts last month (a Carlisle win wedged between two placed performances) and another bold bid looks assured. Rum Runner is 7lb better off with the selection for a three-length beating at Carlisle three weeks ago and he warrants respect, while Redcar runner-up Willa also has a chance with first-time cheekpieces fitted.
WIN: ARRANMORE

DANGER: KETTLE HILL
TRUTH IN JEST won a touch more cosily than the winning margin may suggest when making it back-to-back victories at Redcar last month and looks more than capable of continuing his fine run of form following a 4lb rise. Nigel Tinker’s charge can edge out Impeller, who was just held when sent off at Pontefract last week and is likely to be competitive again off the same rating. He is the pick of Tim Easterby’s duo, with Richard Fahey’s Cooperation not disgraced when seventh in a competitive Royal Ascot handicap last time and interesting in calmer waters here.
WIN: TRUTH IN JEST
RACE
DANGER: KEEPER
RIDGEWAY thrived for the application of first-time cheekpieces when taking full advantage of a reduced mark at Lingfield last time and may follow up that emphatic eight-and-a-half-length victory despite a 10lb hike from the assessor. That headgear is retained here and he could take some catching if able to cut loose on the front end once again. Kettle Hill disappointed on handicap debut last time, but impressed in novice and maiden contests before that and could figure, while dual course winner Bollin Joan is also noted.
WIN: RIDGEWAY
RACE
DANGER: RUM RUNNER
There looks to be more substance to the form of CARRIGILLIHY’s Pontefract success than Keeper’s Brighton victory and Tim Easterby’s charge is fancied to follow up under a 6lb penalty. He looked an out-and-out stayer that day and David Allan will no doubt make plenty of use of his stamina here. Keeper is clearly improving and rates the biggest threat, ahead of Wolverhampton runner-up Outback Boy.
WIN: CARRIGILLIHY
RACE
DANGER: EL MAGA
DANGER: IMPELLER
ART DEALER was much improved when upped to a mile at Brighton last month and Mark Johnston’s Showcasing gelding could continue his progression to get off the mark at the third attempt. Makashi was disappointing when sent off favourite on handicap debut at Haydock recently, but is likely to be much more competitive back in maiden company. La Sensazione kept on well for third when debuting over 7f at Wolverhampton in May and the extra yardage of this could be to the liking of the Kodiac filly.
WIN: ART DEALER
DANGER: MAKASHI

STAR RATING EXPLAINED Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATING The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
LAST TIME WE MET
THURSDAY 17TH JUNE 2021 IT WAS FANTASTIC TO HAVE A CROWD HERE FOR LADIES’ DAY WHICH IS ALWAYS ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR SEASON AND WE WERE TREATED TO SOME EXCELLENT ACTION ON THE TRACK ACROSS A SEVEN-RACE CARD. The feature race of the day was the MansionBet’s Betstival Beaten By A Head Handicap and it saw Baryshnikov make it two wins from four races this season for David Barron. On his latest start the five-year-old had run creditably to finish fifth in the Zetland Gold Cup at Redcar and he built on that effort to justify favouritism here. He was given a confident ride by Connor Beasley, held up in last position before coming through powerfully up the inside of the field to win by a length. Earlier on the card, there was an impressive winner of the opening Secret Spa Bedale EBF Novice Stakes as Mot And The Messer got off the mark a by a wide-margin five and half lengths. Trained by Tom Dascombe, the son of Cotai Glory had finished fifth on debut and showed the benefit of that experience on his second career start with Paul Mulrennan in the saddle. He was always up with the pace before going clear in the final furlong for a comfortable success so he is an exciting prospect for his connections to look forward to. In the following Betstival Season at MansionBet Handicap, Coley’s Koko had been running well this season for Nigel Tinkler and gained her second win of the campaign with a nice turn of foot once out in the open. The filly had finished runner-up at Leicester five days earlier and she continued her good run of form here on the back of the quick turnaround. She could be spotted travelling easily through the contest but had to be switched out by Rowan Scott to get a clear run and once the gap came she took full advantage, looking value for more than the winning margin of half a length. In the third race of the afternoon, the MansionBet’s Summer Of Love-Ly Offers Handicap,
Connor Beasley rode the first winner of his quick-fire double as the lightly-raced Harlem Soul recorded a first career success. Having only his fourth race, the Mark Johnston-trained colt enjoyed the step up to a mile and half as he saw out the extra furlong strongly to score by two and three-quarter lengths. After Baryshnikov’s success had made it a fourth win from four races for the favourites, there was an upset in the Grantley Hall Handicap as Hurstwood landed the prize at odds of 16/1 in a thrilling finish. Trained by Peter Niven, the four-year-old returned to form dropped back to six furlongs on quick ground, although he needed the full distance as he just got the verdict on the line. The penultimate race of the day was the MansionBet Betstival Bet 10 Get 20 Handicap and it saw True Courage continue his improvement this season for Michael Bell to win for the first time. Having finished runner-up at Yarmouth eight days earlier over ten furlongs, he benefitted from the extra quarter of a mile this time as he won smoothly by two and a half lengths in the hands of Dylan Hogan. There was a winning favourite of the final race of Ladies’ Day, although Whitwell had to dig deep for success in the Quilter Private Client Advisers Ladies’ Derby Handicap. In the race for female amateur jockeys, Miss Serena Brotherton set the pace onboard the Michael & David Easterbytrained four-year-old and it took all of the jockey’s skills in the saddle to get Whitwell home in front. He had been headed over two furlongs out but Brotherton galvanised the gelding to come back with a renewed effort to win by a head in the end.

PLAY SMARTER
RIVERSWAY produced a polished display when making a winning debut at Carlisle 3 weeks ago and, with improvement likely, she looks the way to go. Whiteandblue was back in sixth in that Carlisle novice, but she’ll be more streetwise now and shouldn’t be far away. However, the selection may have most to fear from El Maga, who will appreciate this drop in class following her Royal Ascot assignment.

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap raGng which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure compeGGve racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

Horse
This is a one mile about four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 56 to 75. To qualify for a handicap raGng horses must have run at least three Gmes in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This raGng then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this parGcular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a one mile, one furlong about 170 yards handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap raGng this is regularly reassessed. A belowpar effort could result in a reduced raGng whilst a strong performance could see the raGng increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap raGng has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty which is based on the age of the horse in this race.

KETTLE HILL disappointed on his handicap bow at Redcar, but he was progressive prior to that and is well worth another chance with this step up in trip a potentially good move. This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 56 to 75. Like most handicaps on the Flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that parGcular band. However, all handicaps sGpulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespecGve of how low their raGng is. This is o•en described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

This one mile contest for three-years-old and upwards is a maiden stakes - a race for horses that have yet to record a racecourse victory. There are a variety of reasons why the older horses in this race could sGll be maidens. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career.

PLAY SMARTER
LA SENSAZIONE showed plenty under considerate handling when third at Wolverhampton on debut and the form has been boosted since, so she can improve enough to get off the mark at the second a·empt. Makashi is sure to be thereabouts if he’s back to the form he showed on his penultimate outing, while further progress from Art Dealer would give him a decent chance.
