Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse. We have a busy month ahead with this the first of six meetings in August. We’ve been blessed with some excellent weather so far this season so fingers crossed for more of the same. Our feature race this afternoon is the Armstrong Memorial Handicap at 3.42, run in memory of all members of the Armstrong family who have contributed greatly to the racecourse since its inauguration. Our thanks to them and good luck to the contenders. Today we also remember Robert Armstrong, one of the leading trainers in the country across his 27 years as a license holder. Robert expertly handled some top equine stars from his Newmarket base including Moorestyle, Never So Bold, Maroof and Shady Heights, who you will see have races in their name this afternoon. We extend our thanks and a very warm welcome to Robert’s family and friends who are with us today. We’re back in action next Monday evening 9th August and the following Saturday 14th is our biggest meeting of the season, the William Hill Great St Wilfrid. We hope you have a great day with us today and hope to see you again soon. JAMES HUTCHINSON Managing Director

TODAY’S TIPS RACE
1
With the recent form of the Charlie Appleby stable and the boys in blue, Summer’s Day looks to have obvious claims in this line-up. He shaped with some promise on debut at Doncaster but was very green and still has a lot of learning to do. LITTLE MISS DYNAMO lived up to her name earlier in the month when winning nicely and she is selected to follow up, with May Punch expected to chase her home now 3lb better off with the selection for a 1 1/4l defeat.
WIN: LITTLE MISS DYNAMO
RACE
2
Triple Jaye and MORTY met over C&D in June with the latter coming out on top by half a length. The David O’Meara-trained gelding may be 2lb worse off now but can get back to winning ways here having run well the last twice following that success. Conversely, Triple Jaye’s form seems to have fallen off a cliff since then. Rose All Day is also respected on her first run for new connections.
WIN: MORTY
RACE
3
4 5
6 7
DANGER: BRIARDALE
Doctor Parnassus produced another good run when a neck second over the extended 1m3f at Haydock off 2lb lower last month and had two subsequent winners in behind that day. However, he remains a maiden after five starts and may have to play second fiddle again, this time to MAHRAJAAN, who confirmed the promise of his debut when landing a 1m2f novice stakes at Leicester 18 days ago. This longer trip should suit and he looks up to conceding weight all round with the promise of more to come. Sukarno is a respected newcomer for Mark Johnston out of a 1m-winning dam.
WIN: MAHRAJAAN
RACE
DANGER: INTRINSIC BOND
Briardale ran out a very comfortable five-length winner over C&D last month, but he got the run of the race in a small field that day and has an 8lb rise to deal with here, so it could pay to take him on with RUM RUNNER. The six-year-old was doing his best work at the finish when returning to form with a half-length second over 1m here latest and should relish the step back up in distance, while he remains 15lb lower than his highest winning mark. Big Boy Bobby produced a career-best effort when held by just a neck in second over this trip at Nottingham last month and there could be more to come, especially now cheekpieces are tried for the first time.
WIN: RUM RUNNER
RACE
DANGER: NAKEETA
Weight could be the key to this trappy contest and as impressive as top-weight Intrinsic Bond was on his most recent start, he must now give a hefty 18lb to fellow last-time-out winner MACHO PRIDE. The son of Camacho has been progressing throughout the season and everything seemed to click at Haydock last month. Off a 6lb higher mark today, he can follow up, with the inconsistent but capable Gale Force Maya also making the shortlist.
WIN: MACHO PRIDE
RACE
DANGER: TRIPLE JAYE
Like his stable, TEESCOMPONENTSFLY has been in tremendous form of late and if not for wandering around late on at Thirsk on his most recent start, he would be coming here in search of the hat-trick. Back down in trip today, he can regain the winning thread. Former Ebor winner Nakeeta stands out as a big threat having run well at a higher level on his most recent start, while Cogital is another that has been in excellent form this season.
WIN: TEESCOMPONENTSFLY
RACE
DANGER: SUMMER’S DAY
DANGER: DOCTOR PARNASSUS
ASCOT DAY is in fine form and rates the safest bet. The seven-year-old went up 4lb for his Epsom success before making a bold bid for a 1m4f double when only finding one too good at Chepstow last month, and may have a little less on his plate today. Act Of Magic continues to run well in defeat and another bold bid could be on the cards, while Sudona is slipping back down to a workable mark.
WIN: ASCOT DAY
DANGER: ACT OF MAGIC

STAR RATING EXPLAINED Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATING The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a five furlongs selling handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 60. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap raGng which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure compeGGve racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130. The horses compeGng are available for sale immediately a•er the race.

Robert Walter Armstrong (15 January 1944 – 4 February 2021)
Robert was born in 1944 into a famous racing dynasty first founded in 1885 by his grandfather, Bob, who was a famous jockey and trainer in Yorkshire. Robert’s father, Sam, continued the family tradition and trained horses in Middleham, Yorkshire. In 1945, Sam moved with Robert’s mother and their children, Susan (then aged 6 years’ old) and Robert (aged 1 year’s old), to Warren Place in Newmarket
to become the trainer for the Maharaja of Baroda. Shortly afterwards Sam moved down the road to Saint Gatien which became Robert’s home and stables until his retirement in 2000. During Robert’s 27 years as a licence holder, he became one of the leading trainers in Newmarket and the country. He was best known for his handling of top sprinters
Moorestyle and Never So Bold in the 1970s and 1980s and in later years was famed for training 66/1 shot Maroof to land the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot in 1994.
the patronage of the late Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, for whom he trained very successfully until his retirement in 2000 with particular highlights being Mujtahid and Mujadil.
In 1980, Moorestyle became the top rated horse in Europe after Group 1 triumphs in the July Cup, Prix de l’Abbaye and Prix de la Foret as well as Group 2 victories in the Haydock Sprint Cup and Challenge Stakes at Newmarket.
Upon Robert’s retirement, he moved to Jersey with his wife, Jane, and his stepson, Max where they spent many happy years. Robert very much liked Jersey as it was private and peaceful whilst also allowing him quick access to the South of France to enjoy his love of fast cars and good food and wine.
Five years later, Never So Bold received the same accolade after scoring 3 times at the highest level in the King’s Stand Stakes, the July Cup and what is now known as the Nunthorpe Stakes at York. It was at about this time that Robert received
Robert is survived by Jane, Max, his sister, Susan Piggott, and his nieces, Maureen Haggas and Tracy Piggott.

Horse
This is a one mile and six furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75. To qualify for a handicap raGng horses must have run at least three Gmes in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This raGng then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this parGcular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a sixfurlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap raGng this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced raGng whilst a strong performance could see the raGng increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap raGng has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

This looks very competitive, despite the small field. MACHO PRIDE took a step forward when striking at Haydock recently and while this demands another personal best, Ben Haslam’s charge may well be equal to the task. Intrinsic Bond is greatly respected, for all that a 10lb rise for his decisive Ca·erick success won’t be easy to shrug off, and Bossipop needs considering, too.

This is a one mile, one furlong and 170 yards handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that parGcular band. However, all handicaps sGpulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespecGve of how low their raGng is. This is o•en described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

This contest is another Novice Stakes, this Gme run over a distance of one mile and four furlongs. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds and upwards in this race are sGll light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career.

MAHRAJAAN should have more to offer on the back of his Leicester success and will likely take a bit of stopping. Doctor Parnassus is the obvious threat if showing up here rather than at Thirsk on Sunday. Mark Johnston newcomer Sukarno could also play a part if the market suggests he’s fancied.

PLAY SMARTER
While SUDONA has failed to fire the last twice, she is now 1lb below her last winning mark and may be worth chancing in a trappy-looking race. David O’Meara’s charge appears to be pre·y versatile ground-wise, whereas Act of Magic ideally needs a fast surface and, in contrast, Firewater’s connections will be hoping that conditions deteriorate. Ascot Day is second choice.
