Royal Ascot 2020 – Taking place safely behind closed doors Following government approval, British racing resumed along with several other professional sports on 1st June, under strict guidelines and protocols established by the British Racing Authority (BHA) with Public Health England. Those attending will be required to travel directly to and from the fixtures, with the vast majority able to do this via car and without using public transport. Attendance at Royal Ascot is extremely limited only to those who are absolutely required to operate the meeting. This includes essential BHA and racecourse staff, medical personnel, vets, one trainer per yard, one racing groom per horse, jockeys, horsebox drivers and a limited number of media. All attendees at Royal Ascot will have to pass a mandatory three-stage health screening. This includes: 1 - An online education module to ensure attendees have a baseline understanding of COVID-19. 2 - An online health questionnaire – completed at least seven days prior to planned attendance. 3 - Screening/temperature checks on arrival at the racecourse. Everybody will also be required to have adequate photo ID to prove identity. If anybody fails the screening, they will not be allowed entry to the racecourse. As a non-contact sport taking place outdoors, the risk of virus transmissions are recognised to be lower. The vast majority of the race meeting can be run whilst maintaining social distancing guidelines and dedicated social distancing officers will be on site to ensure these guidelines are maintained at all times. There are a small number of situations where social distancing will not be able to be maintained, albeit very briefly, such as legging up or loading horses into the stalls. PPE and/or face coverings will be worn within the racecourse by personnel who are unable to maintain social distancing. This will include jockeys, stalls handlers, stable staff, trainers and veterinary teams. Field sizes have been limited to 24 at Royal Ascot to help ensure social distancing throughout the site. For more information on how racing at Royal Ascot and other racecourses is taking place safely, please visit the British Horseracing Authority website: https://www.britishhorseracing.com/regulation/covid-19-coronavirus-industry-guidance-and-updates/

Royal Ascot - Race Histories 1.15pm

The Golden Gates Stakes (Handicap)

Today’s opening contest is among the six prizes to have been added to the Royal Ascot race programme in 2020 and is one of three new contests to be staged only this year. The Golden Gates are the ceremonial entrance point as the Royal Procession arrives at the top of Ascot’s famous Straight Mile; Her Majesty The Queen has graciously consented to this temporary name for a race to be run by three-year-olds over a mile and a quarter.

1.50pm

The Wolferton Stakes (Listed Race)

The Wolferton Stakes was introduced to the Royal Ascot programme in 2002 when the meeting was extended to five days, and was run as a Listed contest for the first time in 2018. It is usually held on the opening day of the Royal Meeting. Newmarket trainer John Gosden holds the best record in the race, with the latest of his four victories courtesy of Monarchs Glen in 2018. Last year’s winner Addeybb was beaten by just three-quarters of a length by the classy mare Magical in the Group 1 QIPCO Champion Stakes here that October, and has since gone on to win a pair of Group 1s in Australia this term.

2.25pm

The Jersey Stakes (Group 3)

First run under its current title in 1919, The Jersey Stakes is named after George Bussey, the 4th Earl of Jersey, who was briefly Master of the Buckhounds in the 1780s. Run over seven furlongs, usually on the final day of Royal Ascot, the race is framed for three-year-olds who have yet to win a Group 1 or Group 2, but have often competed at that level. The race has been won by some top milers over the years, most notably Zilzal (1989) and Observatory (2000), both of whom progressed to win the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, while the 2016 winner Ribchester returned to Royal Ascot a year later to land the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes. Last year’s renewal saw Danny Tudhope ride his fourth winner of the week when guiding the Richard Fahey-trained Space Traveller home to win by just a head.

3.00pm

The Chesham Stakes (Listed Race)

This race, usually the opener on the final day of the Royal Meeting, is named after the 3rd Baron Chesham, who was the last Master of the Buckhounds from 1900 to 1901. First run in 1919, it replaced the first leg of The Triennial Stakes, which had been run over five furlongs for two-year olds. Now a Listed contest, the race is staged over the longer distance of seven furlongs and restricted to youngsters whose sires won at ten furlongs or more. Pinatubo proved himself one of the most exciting horses in training when breaking the juvenile course record to win last year’s renewal, the colt ending last season as Europe’s champion two-year-old, unbeaten and with a higher rating than even the legendary Frankel achieved at the equivalent stage in his faultless career.

3.35pm

The Gold Cup (Group 1) (British Champions Series)

Founded in 1807, The Gold Cup is the oldest and most prestigious race of the whole week. Staged over the marathon trip of two-and-a-half miles, it is a stiff test of stamina and attracts Europe’s very best long distance horses. Many have distinguished themselves with multiple Gold Cup wins, enhancing the race’s reputation as a specialists’ event. Sagaro won three times in the 1970s but the Aidan O’Brien-trained Yeats did better still, landing a remarkable fourth Gold Cup victory under Johnny Murtagh in 2009. The Queen’s Estimate was a hugely popular winner four years later, providing Her Majesty with her 22nd of 23 Royal Ascot successes. In 2019, the John Gosden-trained Stradivarius once again proved himself to be the finest stayer in Europe, showing class and resilience to secure back-to-back victories under Frankie Dettori, the jockey sealing a memorable four-timer in the process.

4.10pm

The Britannia Stakes (Heritage Handicap)

First run in 1928, The Britannia Stakes has a similar profile to The Royal Hunt Cup but is confined to three-year-old colts and geldings. A notable name on its roll of honour is the 1983 winner Teleprompter, one of Flat racing’s most popular geldings of all time. Irish-based trainer Joanna Morgan, the first woman to ride at Royal Ascot in 1975, saddled her only winner at the meeting when Roca Tumu won in 2013, while last year saw jockey Harry Bentley enjoy his first ever Royal Ascot win when swooping late aboard Biometric to deny Frankie Dettori a five-timer on the day.

4.40pm

The Sandringham Stakes (Handicap)

Originally run as The Fern Hill Stakes, this race was part of the traditional Heath Day card on the Saturday after Royal Ascot. It was renamed after the Norfolk royal residence when the Royal Meeting was expanded to five days as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002. The competitive mile handicap, limited to three-year-old fillies, has seen some excellent winners over the years, including Timepiece (2010), who went on to land the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket, and 2006 winner Red Evie, who subsequently won two Group 1s over a mile. Last year’s renewal was a particularly memorable one, as Hayley Turner became the first female jockey to win at the Royal Meeting in 32 years, delivering a perfectly timed ride on Thanks Be to hold off the challenge of Her Majesty The Queen’s Magnetic Charm.

“Our Zoustar fillies are absolutely gorgeous and we couldn’t be happier. They have everything you want; tremendous presence, correct, incredibly well-balanced with a lovely way of moving and a strong backend and hindleg.” Sara Cumani, Fittocks Stud

“We’re over the moon with our Zoustar colt. A handsome & exceptionally well put together individual with a tough but very lovable character. He really is the perfect package.” Tracy Vigors, Hillwood Stud

“I’m excited about Zoustar but I’m even more excited about him now that I’ve seen his foals. We foaled 9 here and they are a cracking bunch. Scopey, muscled and with a good walk they should go down very well at the sales.” The Hon. Peter Stanley, New England Stud

A History Of Ascot Over three centuries Ascot has both set and raised the standard for racecourses. It has evolved from the far-sighted vision of a Queen from a distant era into a byword for horse racing of the highest quality. The palpable sense of glamour, pageantry and history, underpinned by Ascot’s outstanding modern facilities, offers an experience like no other. It all began more than 300 years ago, in 1711, when the first horse races were staged on a piece of heathland that Queen Anne had identified as a suitable place to run horses. On Saturday 11th August of that year, seven horses lined up to compete for the inaugural ‘Her Majesty’s Plate’. That piece of heathland has evolved into one of the world’s most iconic sporting theatres. Ascot’s first four-day event, from which the formal ‘Royal’ Ascot meeting would eventually spring, took place in 1768. In 1825, King George IV suggested that the reigning monarch could travel in a horse-drawn carriage from the racecourse’s Golden Gates, and down the Straight Mile, to open Royal Ascot each day. And so the Royal Procession – one of Royal Ascot’s most famous and beloved traditions – was born. 1910’s Royal Meeting, which came a few weeks after the death of King Edward VII, became known as ‘Black Ascot’. Racegoers attended in mourning attire as a mark of respect to the late monarch, who occupies a place in Ascot’s history as one of its most passionate supporters. In 1939, the first racing fixture staged separately from the Royal meeting took place at Ascot. 1951 saw the launch of The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, which is staged every July and is one of the most prestigious middle-distance races in Europe, and since 2011 Ascot has hosted QIPCO British Champions Day – the star-studded championship finale to the flat season. The Queen’s Silver, Golden and Diamond Jubilees have all been celebrated at Royal Ascot. In 2006, Her Majesty opened a new Grandstand, heralding a new era for the racecourse and consolidating its position as one of the finest racing venues in the world. From Frankel to Black Caviar and from Yeats to Brigadier Gerard, Ascot has crowned so many champions across so many eras. It’s been some story so far, and we can’t wait to find what the next chapters hold.

Race Summary: SIR DRAGONET, who started favourite for last year’s Derby, finished fifth there and fourth in the St Leger. Despite being beaten on his return, he can step up here. Last year’s Eclipse third Regal Reality has since been gelded and could be a big player for a stable that excels at improving older horses. Fox Tal is still lightly raced after only six career starts and shaped like a horse to follow when fourth to Magical over this course and distance in the Champion Stakes last October. John Gosden, who has sent out the winner of this race four times in the last ten years, saddles Crossed Baton and Dubai Warrior, winner of the Winter Derby in February but yet to prove his effectiveness on turf. The Impact Of Coronavirus As a result of the unprecedented impact of the global coronavirus pandemic across the world in 2020, we are unable to welcome racegoers to join us for this year’s Royal Ascot. Following ongoing discussions with the UK government, racing will take place behind closed doors - with the safety of the public, staff and participating connections taking priority over everything else. We look forward to welcoming our racegoers to Royal Ascot 2021 but are pleased to be able to provide racing fans with the opportunity to watch the five-day meeting on television. Royal Ascot 2020 will go ahead across the five days originally planned, from Tuesday 16th June to Saturday 20th June inclusive. All of the historic events remain on a revised timetable, with the addition of an extra six races resulting in a total of 36 contests across the five days: seven on the first four days and eight on the final day. With racing only resuming in Great Britain on 1st June, the decision has been taken to make some changes from the traditional schedule. The St James’s Palace Stakes and The Coronation Stakes have been moved to the final day to maximise the amount of time between those races and The 2000 and 1000 Guineas, which took place on 6th and 7th June. Four of the six two-year-old races will take place on the Friday and the Saturday, providing this year’s juveniles with as much time as possible before contesting key races at Royal Ascot. All 36 races will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Racing and 30 will be shown live on ITV1. As well as being able to watch the action live, you can join us in celebrating Royal Ascot 2020 via our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram channels and the official Ascot app.

Longines, The Official Timekeeper of Ascot Racecourse, are generously offering one of their watches to the connections – owner, trainer, jockey and groom – of a horse which breaks a track record here during the 2020 Flat season. The records prior to this year’s Royal Ascot are as listed above.

CATEGORIES EXPLAINED... QIPCO British Champions Series showcases 35 of the UK’s finest Flat races, and last year included three of the world’s top five contests. The Series races are contested across five different categories – sprint; middle distance; long distance; fillies & mares and kicks off with the mile division and the first Classic of the season, the QIPCO 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.

SPRINT For horseracing’s speed merchants, the Sprint category comprises two races over the minimum distance of 5 furlongs and five races over 6 furlongs, including the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.

MILE The Mile category kicks off with the QIPCO 2000 Guineas and is followed up by the St James’s Palace Stakes and the Queen Anne Stakes. The category culminates in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on QIPCO British Champions Day. With prize money of £1.1 million, it is Europe’s richest mile race.

MIDDLE DISTANCE The Middle Distance division consists of a number of hugely valuable and iconic races run between 10 and 12 furlongs. Highlights from the seven-race series include the world-famous Investec Derby run at Epsom and Britain’s richest ten-furlong race, the £1.3m QIPCO Champion Stakes at Ascot on QIPCO British Champions Day.

LONG DISTANCE In the QIPCO British Champions Series Long Distance category come the stamina-sapping races for horses that can stay the trip - the “stayers”. The category features seven races in total across the calendar including the 2 1/4 mile Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and the QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup on QIPCO British Champions Day.

FILLIES & MARES The very best fillies and mares battle it out to become queens of this division throughout the year, with seven Group 1 races run between 8 furlongs and 12 furlongs. This kicks off with the QIPCO 1000 Guineas in May and culminates in the QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes in October.

Racing Notices Position Of Stalls Straight Course - Centre Round Course - Inside Form Guide And Rating Under each horse the form is given, followed by a star rating and its official BHA Rating. The form guides and star ratings are compiled by the Racing Post. Horse Welfare At every race meeting at Ascot there are four specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses racing on these days. During each race, vets follow the horses by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is now standard practice for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse. The procedure for the allocation and operation of the reserves protocol will be as detailed in the notice headed ‘Reserves’ which appears in the important notices following the Standard Conditions on the Racing Bulletin area of the BHA Racing Administration Internet site www2.racingadmin.co.uk.
