★★★★✩ Good chance of being placed.
13. Breeder 14. Trainer 15. Jockey 16. Sponsor 15
★★★✩✩ By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
★★✩✩✩ Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
★✩✩✩✩ Can be given little or no chance.
BHA Ratings Explained
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
The details of Owner, Trainer, Breeder, Sponsor & Colours are highlighted on the card. If you are unsure about reading the card, remember to ask at a tote window for advice.

JACKPOT DES BORDES got away with a drop in trip around this sharper track when scoring here last month and, with improvement on the cards back up in distance, Paul Nicholls’ 5-y-o could take some stopping. He gets the vote over Katana, who showed ability amidst greenness in a Wincanton bumper a couple of months ago and warrants considerable respect now hurdling. Bank On Frank can edge out Devon Dude for third.

KIT’S COTY: Following its run on 1/12/2024 it was reported that the horse would prefer a faster surface.
HORIZON D’OR: Following its run on 3/11/2024 it was reported that the horse ran flat.

A winning chase debut could be on the cards for RI NA CUIRTE, who looked an improved model over hurdles last month, striking at Fontwell prior to finishing a solid third at Ascot. The latter form has been boosted (the winner of that handicap has won again since, and the second also scored next time) and the fact that this 6-y-o was runner-up between the flags augurs well ahead of this switch to fences. The in-form Langley Hundred and likely improver Tout Sur Moi rate the main dangers.

Race Description
Listed races are high class and only bettered by a Grade 1, 2 or 3 contest. In effect, it is an intermediate level; many of the runners in this two miles and 104 yards hurdle race will now have an official rating that makes it no longer feasible to run them in handicaps and will be using this race as a springboard to even better things. Initially, weight is allocated according to age and sex, before penalties are given to horses that have previously won at this level or above. These penalties range from 2lb for a Listed success to 8lb for a Grade 1 victory.

Race Description
This is a two miles, seven furlongs and 198 yards handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 130. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

Race Description
This is a three miles and two furlongs handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 100 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95.

Horse welfare is a priority at Taunton Racecourse At every meeting there are 3 specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons appointed to look after the welfare of the horses in action. One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys.
A second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and horse some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

Race Description
This is a two miles and three furlongs handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 115. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.
