13. Breeder 14. Trainer 15. Jockey 16. Sponsor 15

★★★✩✩ By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

★✩✩✩✩ Can be given little or no chance.

BHA Ratings Explained

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

The details of Owner, Trainer, Breeder, Sponsor & Colours are highlighted on the card. If you are unsure about reading the card, remember to ask at a tote window for advice.

Race Description

Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October This particular two miles and three furlongs novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards.

Race Description

The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two mile race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today

Horse Welfare

The Great British Bonus (GBB) offers multiple bonuses of up to £20,000 per eligible race for British-bred fillies and mares.

Official Photographers are wearing armbands. Members of the Public are not permitted to go onto the course to take photographs nor to take photographs inside the Parade Rings or Winners Enclosure. Flash may NOT be used at any time

Horse welfare is a priority at Taunton Racecourse. At every meeting there are 3 specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons appointed to look after the welfare of the horses in action. One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys.

A second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and horse some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

Race Description

This is a two miles and three furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 130. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best.

TOM DONIPHON and Sorceleur stand out. The former saw off a couple of in-form rivals in comfortable fashion on his handicap debut over C&D last week and gets the nod to go in again given he escapes a penalty for that success. Race Description

A Hunter Chase gives the regulars of the Point-to-Pointing world a chance to shine under National Hunt rules. A horse is only qualified for this type of event if it holds a Hunters’ Certificate, something provided by a Master of Hounds to prove that the horse has been regularly hunted throughout the season. This particular event is for five-year-olds and upwards, and is to be run over two miles, five and a half furlongs. All Hunter Chases are restricted to amateur jockeys.

Race Description

This two miles, four and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race/steeple chase has been designed for mares four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 100. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.
