Foreword My family and I would like to welcome you all to the 10th Wellington International Horse Trials and Country Fair. We are particularly pleased that we can include public spectators this year as the Covid-19 restrictions are eased. The Country Fair has proved to be a great success in recent years, generating much increased interest due to the range of family attractions and the extended trade stand village. We hope it has become a thoroughly enjoyable experience for visiting families. We are so pleased that a number of our Olympic competitors have returned from Tokyo and will be competing at Wellington International Horse Trials, as well as other experienced Riders from around the world. This year we have made exciting changes to the cross-country course which will challenge both horse and rider. Adrian Ditcham and the ground team have done their best to ensure that the going is at its optimum. The event has been awarded international status from 2020 to 2025 by British Eventing and the schedule for other classes in 2021 has been extended. These additions will allow local riders the experience of competing alongside world class riders in the new arenas created throughout the site. We are also proud to host the prestigious PC110 Championship which welcomes Pony Club competitors from across the country. The Brooke have been nominated as Wellington International Horse Trials “Event Charity of The Year 2021”, which is an extremely deserving organisation. There are many people to thank who assist in the smooth running of this event. The sport simply could not continue without the support of volunteers who generously give their valuable time. We also thank the officials, judges and of course the owners and riders. We welcome back sponsors who have long standing relationships with The Estate and also new companies who have joined our affiliated sponsorship programme with Wellington Riding. The support of sponsors enables our Event Organiser, David Sheerin, to create an outstanding competition for the riders. Finally, I would like to wish everyone involved an enjoyable weekend of sporting action. We hope that this event becomes a firm date in the diary for all those who enjoy attending these horse trials with their family and friends.
The Duke of Wellington
WELCOME
PLEASE READ We want to make sure your weekend is one to remember, here are some top tips and a couple of polite requests too: • • • • • • • • • • • • •
The weather is set to be great! Don’t forget to pack sunscreen. Wear suitable footwear, we’re in a big field and the ground is undulating. No glass is permitted on-site. You can bring a picnic but please clean up your rubbish and take it with you, animals graze on the land after the event. No BBQ’s are allowed. There will be food and drink stalls but there is no public drinking water on-site. We suggest bringing water with you. We have hand sanitising stations by our toilets, however we recommend bringing an additional sanitiser with you. Please use before and after taking part in any of the daily activities. All dogs must be on a lead at all times & under control, paying special attention to competing horses. We suggest sharing vehicles where possible to reduce show traffic congestion. Leave plenty of time for parking, queuing on arrival and departure is to be expected. Forward parking is only available for blue badge disabled holders. Please ensure you have read and abide by the health and safety statement set out in the attractions programme. All dog mess must be picked up & disposed of properly or the organiser reserves the right to request exiting from the event. In the unlikely event of rain, please be aware horses can spook with umbrellas. Please be considerate when putting them up & kindly wait until the horse passes if you are ringside.

Brooke Action for Working Horses and Donkeys Brooke is an international animal welfare charity dedicated to relieving the suffering of more working horses, donkeys and mules than any other organisation. For more than 600 million people worldwide, in some of the poorest countries, working equines are the backbone of the community. Sadly, more than half of these animals suffer from exhaustion, dehydration and malnutrition as a result of excessive workloads and limited animal health services. Brooke works with owners, communities, governments and international organisations to reduce suffering and make lasting improvements to animal welfare. Operating in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, Brooke has adopted a ‘ground up’, sustainable approach to change. Instead of purely offering veterinary relief to suffering animals, Brooke works to educate communities on how to better care for their animals and provides them with the infrastructure of good local animal health providers, through the training of vets and farriers. They also work with governments and to improve animal welfare policies and get working equines on the agenda. This approach will lead to longer-lasting change and allows Brooke to move onto other areas once their work is done. Event Charity of The Year for Wellington International Horse Trials and Country Fair 2021.

What is this “Eventing” lark all about? In simple terms it is the equine equivalent to a Triathlon. Three disciplines, same horse and rider, the combination with the best score at the end of all three wins simple! The first Eventing competition was recorded in France in 1902 and it became an official Olympic sport in 1912. Eventing in the UK started in 1949 when Badminton Horse Trials were held for the first time. The object of the event was to test Cavalry Officers' chargers for their fitness and sustainability.
Dressage Dressage originally demonstrated the horses ability to perform on the parade ground, where elegance and obedience were key. Dressage comprises of a set sequence of compulsory movements in a marked arena. Each movement is marked out of ten with the total being added up. In pure dressage the score is converted to a percentage and highest percentage wins. In Eventing the score is converted into penalties where the lowest is the best.
Show Jumping
Cross Country
Designed to test the agility and obedience of the horse; this phase of the competition is held in an arena where horse and rider tackle a round of 8-12 jumps.
Cross country began as a test of stamina, courage and bravery over difficult terrain. It was important for a charger on long marches or if a horse was needed to carry a dispatch across country.
If the horse knocks a pole off the jump it will incur four penalties, which are added to the dressage penalty score. Penalties are also added if the horse refuses to jump, the rider falls off (elimination in some cases) or if the time limit is exceeded. A refusal or a knock down incurs four penalties.
Don’t forget to follow our social media for all the great photos and news from this weekend! @Wellingtonhorsetrials #WIHT21
A BEGINNERS GUIDE TO EVENTING
Today riders have to jump a course of solid obstacles within a time limit, refusals, rider falls (which can result in elimination in some cases), going too slow and going too fast all result in gaining penalties. This phase can be very influential as a refusal incurs 20 penalties. Everyone wants a “clear within the time”, so no points are added to their score. After competing in all three disciplines, the person with the lowest score wins.
