Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

Official BHA Rating

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

The figures in red display the horse’s previous form, with the number denoting finishing position. The number on the right shows the runners most recent result, with abbreviations used also. A layoff from racing is shown with either - or / CD - Course and distance winner; BF - Beaten favourite; F - Fell; B - Brought down; P - Pulled up; R - Refused; S - Slipped up; U - Unseated rider; R - Ran out.

RACE ONE

RAINBOW SKY was well held in conditions company at Kempton last time but she made a big impression on her debut at the same track. Bred to get further this trip looks right up her street and she can get the better of Anjo Bonita, who ran a promising race on her return at Thirsk earlier in the month. Tarraff looks the pick of the newcomers for a team who can ready one first time out.

RACE TWO

DANGER: Anjo Bonita

Denied by the narrowest of margins on his most recent start at Nottingham, OBAMA ARMY can gain compensation down in trip despite a 3lb rise. Jack Channon’s charge was behind both H Key Lails (second) and Golden Maverick (third) at Southwell earlier in the month, but he is taken to triumph on this occasion. Seraphia could be on a decent mark as well on her handicap debut.

DANGER: Golden Maverick

The Ralph Beckett yard can do little wrong at present and CRESTA DE VEGA must hold every chance if bouncing back to the form that saw him narrowly denied at Lingfield on his penultimate start. He may have too much for Westernesse, who showed a decent level of ability in Ireland last year, while Mahanakhon has the form to also get involved in proceedings.

RACE FOUR

DANGER: Westernesse

Nine Elms has found another level of late and his latest 4lb rise shouldn’t prevent another bold display. Roy Bowring’s inmate, however, does have stall 15 to overcome and CLEAR ANGEL may thwart him in his bid to land a hat-trick. The five-year-old was far from disgraced when finishing sixth in the Spring Mile at Doncaster at the beginning of the month and he makes plenty of appeal off 2lb lower. Perfect Swiss completes the shortlist.

RACE FIVE

DANGER: Nine Elms

TWELFTH KNIGHT appeared to win with something in hand on his stable/seasonal debut for Ruth Carr at Redcar earlier in the month and the handicapper may have let him in lightly off only 4lb higher Hiya Maite lost little in defeat when placing third at Thirsk recently and he should be in the mix once more running off the same mark. Black Friday should appreciate this extended 5f trip and is another to note.

RACE SIX

DANGER: Hiya Maite

HIGH OPINION drops in class following a below-par run over 5f at Doncaster earlier this month and he can build on that now rated just 3lb above his last winning mark. Any market support should not be ignored for the gelded son of Hellvelyn, but Canaria Prince can give the selection plenty to think about on his return from a break. Variety Island is another to bear in mind.

RACE SEVEN

DANGER: Canaria Prince

An emphatic winner over this trip at Southwell last time out, it could be worth siding with CINNODIN on his turf debut. He is rated 6lb higher for the aforementioned success, but that may not be enough to stop him landing a treble here Queenmambo filled the runner-up spot on her last outing, also at Southwell, and is feared most, while Red Bird completes the shortlist in first-time blinkers.

We began the first of eight competitive races with a Handicap Hurdle race over two miles, five and a half furlongs trip. City Derby won for Thomas Dowson and trainer Lizzie Quinlan narrowly ahead of short favourite Butch. City Derby led going into three out and was going best and he was always just doing enough to win.

In the next, the favourite Resplendent Grey showed why he was favourite winning by over a length under Sean Bowen for trainer Olly Murphy. He sat midfield, biding his time before being nudged to pick up the pace. As he went into the closing stages, he began to wander but was always doing enough.

First Class Return secured a quick fire double for Bowen and Murphy winning gamely by three lengths going away with ease from Astroman. He made all and simply couldn’t be caught.

The next race saw an impressive winning margin of five lengths by the 22/1 outside Sword Of Fate. He quickly made all and looked like he was struggling with his jumping three out as his fluency dropped but had the best jump over the last and went on well for Derek Fox and trainer Leonard Kerr.

The winning margins of the next were far closer as Dillarchie and Grand Du Nord battled in out in the closing stages of the three-mile handicap hurdle. Both heading each other at various stages in the race before Dillarchie rallied under Emma Smith-Chaston to secure

the win by a neck for trainer Joanne Foster. Another outsider won the next with the 12/1 shot Silver In Disguise getting a nice toe into the race by the leaders, he led after the 13th and began being ridden three out. He went well clear for Tim Vaughan and jockey Charlie Price and stayed on well to win by over two lengths.

In the penultimate race and the first division of the wetherbyracing.co.uk Open National Hunt Flat Race, Toby Lawes and Harry Bannister had a stylishly easy win by twelve lengths to Telemetry. This favourite clearly has lots of potential as he made all was shaken up three furlongs out and went well clear. He was even eased down, a very impressive win.

To conclude another amazing day of racing, Harry Skelton and Dan Skelton secured a winner by Coco Mademoiselle sitting nicely in midfield before becoming in touch with the leaders and three furlongs out she led. Harry Skelton had to keep reminding her to stay on task and went clear inside the final furlong, Paddy O’Mahler began to chase but couldn’t close the gap. Providing a nice win by two and a quarter lengths to finish off our Easter Raceday.

HORSE WELFARE

Here at Wetherby Racecourse we are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. At every meeting we have three specially qualified Equine Vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. There is also a British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer in attendance.

During the race three vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend to a horse in the same response time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating the injured jockeys.

It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected round the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.
