JOHN DUFOSEE
John Dufosee (Duf to his many friends), a former jockey, was a livery yard proprietor and renowned breaker-in of horses at Nyland - just down the A30 from Henstridge. But he was more than that. What he didn’t know about horses was not worth knowing and he concentrated that knowledge into Point-to-Point racing. It was his life, and his 50-year career spanned the golden age of the sport. John started riding in races when he was just 14 years old and in the next 25 years rode 79 winners. He also finished second on Bantry Bay (winner of two consecutive Horse & Hound Cups) in the 1964 Liverpool Foxhunters and rode the famed Stalbridge Colonist, one of the few horses to beat Arkle, in his final racecourse appearance. John was a fearless rider. One of his favourite stories was of losing his front teeth on the course in a crunching fall at Larkhill. Every time the sixth fence was rebuilt he would ask the Clerk of the Course if his teeth had been found and could he have them back! After retiring from the saddle, he trained hundreds of winners – 37 in his single most successful season. Nyland was one of the largest livery yards in the Wessex Area but he was careful never to endanger Point-to-Pointing’s uniquely amateur appeal. His was never a showy stable, but from it Mike Felton won three national riders championships, notably aboard Sutton Prince, which was (at £10,000) one of the most expensive horses John ever bought – and arguably the best horse he trained. With Jane, John had three children, Sean, Jason and Nick. The older boys followed their father into the saddle and Jason rode 22 winners, including a hunter chase, but like his mother was to die tragically young, at just 32 (the ashes of both were scattered by the last fence here). In 1998 John married Teresa (Re), a family friend and, as an equine physiotherapist, a long-time member of the Nyland team. He always loved a party and was a popular and generous host. His sense of fun was legendary, though not always appreciated by those on the receiving end of his practical jokes – and his new wife was not spared. He died on 27 May 2010, aged 66, and a Hunter Chase named for him is a fitting remembrance, especially on this course which his grandfather played a prominent part in saving when it was unloved and nearly derelict after the War. Duf’s was not a long or easy life, he knew misfortune and tragedy, but he had joy too – and he shared it with everyone lucky enough to have known him. Terry Selby

ABANDONED RACING
EMERGENCY EVACUATION
In the event of abandonment before the conclusion of the first race, racegoers will receive a full refund. If racing is abandoned between the first and third races, 50% will be refunded. Thereafter no refunds will be made. Applications must be made in writing to the Racecourse Office within 14 days of the race meeting and must be accompanied by the paper admission ticket. No refunds will be available on the day of racing. If racing is abandoned prior to the raceday, or before gates open, all pre-booked tickets that have been paid for in advance will automatically be refunded in full.
Whilst we always endeavour to take appropriate steps to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment, an incident may occur which is beyond our control and it is, therefore, important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency. We employ Safety Officials whose job it is to ensure your safety. In the event of a situation which requires a partial or full evacuation of the Stands, announcements will be broadcast and the Officials will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the enclosure quickly and quietly under their guidance. The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area. It may give you peace of mind if you pre-plan and agree a meeting place with your party, just in case you become separated. If we are unable to reoccupy the Stands for any reason, you will be advised immediately, and, if it is considered safe to do so, you will be invited to return to your car or coach. These are precautionary arrangements which we trust will not be required. IMPORTANT
NOTICES
RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Wincanton Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
PRIZE MONEY
The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £297,624 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from 16th September to 31st December 2024.
HEALTH AND SAFETY NOTICE The Racecourse would be grateful if you would observe all Health & Safety requirements whilst you are at Wincanton Racecourse. The emergency exits from the bars onto the grandstand stepping are painted yellow and we would request that you do not stop whilst in this area. We would also request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing ramp and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting on to the actual racecourse. We would also like to remind racegoers that the first aid room is located adjacent to the weighing room.
IN-RUNNING BETTING Please note that in-running betting is not allowed in any public areas of Wincanton Racecourse. As expressly permitted by the Wincanton Racecourse Special Conditions, attendees may not use mobile telephones, laptop computers or any other communications device whilst on the Racecourse to communicate with anyone outside the Racecourse for the purpose of or in connection with any betting. Any racegoer found to be in breach of this rule will be removed from the Racecourse.
