THE AL BASTI EQUIWORLD DUBAI D A N T E S T A K E S ( G R O U P 2) & THE TATTERSALLS MUSIDORA S T A K E S ( G R O U P 3)
Welcome Some fifty-seven days later than we planned for the start of York’s season, it is a pleasure to welcome the return of top flight thoroughbreds to the Knavesmire, it is just such a shame that, for completely understandable reasons, we are not able to also welcome the return of racegoers and supporters. However, I do hope that you are able to follow the action from afar whether that’s on the telly or a mobile device. I do hope you enjoy the ten race card (another sign of these unusual times). This is the first raceday opportunity to express our gratitude to the dedicated staff of the NHS and all the other key workers who supported us all during the darkest days of this pandemic, thank you from all at York Racecourse. Of course, in this most unusual of times, holding today’s Black Type races after Epsom and Royal Ascot takes a little mental adjustment however we are delighted with the quality of the fields and that they have filled a race planning need for these racehorses of such high potential. We are hugely appreciative of the support of Al Basti Equiworld Dubai, Tattersalls and the European Breeders’ Fund for their support of the Dante, Musidora and Marygate respectively, and for the support of connections in sending their horses. The Group 2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante has attracted some exciting declarations which include the unbeaten Highest Ground from the stable of Sir Michael Stoute, a man with a career tally of six Dante wins, at least one every decade since Shahrastani took the title back in 1986. Many observers have noted that champion jockey, Oisín Murphy, looks set to head north for the ride. Cormorant was an impressive Ballydoyle winner of the Group 3 Derrinstown Stud Stakes at Leopardstown, so is priced accordingly by the markets as Aidan O’Brien looks for win number five, since Saratoga Springs first obliged back in the nineties. Many Yorkshire yards have hit the fresh ground running since racing resumed, nowhere better seen than in David O’Meara’s operation that broke the 1,000 career winners barrier earlier this week, congratulations to all involved. The rest of the card is generously supported by our long-term partner Sky Bet and hopefully provides compelling and competitive contests for both two-year-olds and older horses over distances from five furlongs to two miles. For now I hope you enjoy the racing on ITV or Racing TV, of course, we look forward to the day when we can welcome our supporters back to the Knavesmire. Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90 rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race. Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

A message from Mr Malih L Al Basti Wherever in the world you are reading this message, your world has changed from what it was 12 months ago. We send our most sincere condolences to the many people across the globe who have lost loved ones in the most painful of circumstances. Their world will never be the same. And our thanks to those who have bravely in so many ways, tried to make our collective lives better in these challenging times. Our passion for horse racing has not changed. Our love of the thoroughbred has not changed. But how we all enjoy this magnificent sport has changed. And we have had to adapt. And so it is with great pride that Al Basti Equiworld Dubai, can continue to support The Chairman, Committee and every member of the York racecourse team by putting our name to the 2020 Gr2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai, Dante Stakes. We would like to thank the countless people behind the scenes who have made racing possible once more. We wish all owners, trainers, jockeys and stable staff the very best of luck today and throughout the season on The Knavesmire. Malih L Al Basti Owner and Founder Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai.

RACE DESCRIPTION The first Pattern race of this unusual York season is a race limited to 2-y-o horses so in their first season, meaning level weights for the runners that are all fillies. All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock. At this stage in their careers the form book is pretty slim, so perhaps rely on your choice of “P”s, pedigree or pin
LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: GOOD VIBES Trainer: David Evans Jockey: Harry Bentley Age/Weight: 2-8-12 Runners: 18 SP: 10/1 Held up for the first half of the race, Good Vibes sliced through the field in the final two furlongs and went clear in the closing stages to record an impressive Listed victory. One and a quarter lengths was the final winning margin for the smart David Evans-trained filly.

KNAVESMIRE TIP SARDINIA SUNSET sets a fair form standard having finished fourth in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot last month and could shed her maiden tag for Roger Varian now dropped in class. She has a lot of this field held on that form, though Different Face was second behind the eventual Windsor Castle runner-up at Yarmouth before beating Bungledupinblue at Lingfield and should at least confirm that form. Blackberry knew her job on debut at Hamilton and is also noted.

The Tattersalls Musidora Stakes
FACT FILE: WHO WAS MUSIDORA?
THE AUSSIE ANGLE? The Musidora was part of five Classic victories for the partnership of Charles Elsey and Edgar Britt. A lightweight rider who hailed from Sydney. A brace of Darley Yorkshire Oaks triumphs were also on a successful CV. Britt passed away in his native land, in January 2016, aged 103.
Distance One mile, two furlongs and 56 yards (2,050 metres)
Prize money £40,000
Musidora, named after Jeanne Roques who was a famous French star in the silent movies, was a real superstar of the late 1940s. She was trained at Malton by the legendary Captain Charles Elsey to win the 1949 1000 Guineas at Newmarket and the Epsom Oaks just a few weeks later.
WHY IS IT SPECIAL?
As one of the first Pattern races for 3-y-o fillies it lets connections see how their fillies have matured over the winter.
FIRST WINNER? Ambergris, trained by Harry Wragg and ridden by Lester Piggott, she was the 4-9 favourite sparking a five year winning run for The Jolly.
WHY USUALLY A CLASSIC TRIAL?
Lester Piggott
Simples - since 1961, six winners have won the Investec Oaks - Noblesse (1963), Bireme (1980), Diminuendo (1988), Snow Bride (1989), Reams Of Verse (1997) & Sariska (2009).
THE LUCK OF THE IRISH? Irish-trained fillies have won seven times overall. Paddy Prendergast secured a hat-trick from 1963 to 1965 with Noblesse, Ela Marita and Arctic Melody. Vincent O’Brien won it with Where You Lead in 1973 whilst Jim Bolger has also won it three times courtesy of Condessa (1981), Give Thanks (1983) and Lush Lashes (2008). However, today’s renewal doesn’t feature any runners that hail from the Emerald Isle. Lush Lashes
LEADING TRAINERS?
The late Sir Henry Cecil won an astonishing nine times –Fatah Flare (1985), Indian Skimmer (1987), Diminuendo (1988), Snow Bride (1989), All At Sea (1992), Magnificient Style (1996), Reams Of Verse (1997), Passage Of Time (2007) and Aviate (2010). Sir Michael Stoute has eight victories and John Gosden (Ricetta & Lake Lucerne) has six. The late Sir Henry Cecil
LEADING RIDER? Top US rider Steve Cauthen, was aboard Last Feather (1982), then benefitted as retained jockey to Sir Henry Cecil between 1985-89 so rode five winners. Of those riding today, Frankie Dettori (Ricetta) has five victories - Bahr (1998), Punctilious (2004) and the winners of three of the last six renewals; Star Of Seville (2015), So Mi Dar (2016) and Shutter Speed (2017).
HAT-TRICK HEAVEN
Garnie Bougoure rode a hat-trick of winners from 1963 to 1965 and Brian Taylor followed suit from 1966 to 1968. Twenty years later Steve Cauthen achieved the same remarkable treble from 1987 to 1989. Frankie Dettori became the latest trebleriding jockey in 2017 - could he make it four winners in the last six years today?
WHO ARE THE SPONSORS? Tattersalls are Europe’s largest Bloodstock Auctioneers and the world’s oldest, dating back to 1766. From Park Paddocks in Newmarket, Tattersalls offers more than 5,000 thoroughbreds each year. In a normal year, the nine different sales include market leaders in every category. Today will see another page written in the history of this significant contest.
Steve Cauthen
HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE? Since the Tattersalls Musidora Stakes was first run in 1961 only one Yorkshire stable has managed to win it. That accolade goes to Middleham’s Mark Johnston who saddled Secret History to victory in 2005. Johnston has Rose Of Kildare in the race today and local trainer David O’Meara saddles Golden Hind.

The Tattersalls Musidora Stakes (Group 3) One Mile, Two Furlongs About 56 Yards (2,000 metres) See page 43 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION Also part of the Pattern race pyramid is the Group 3 Tattersalls Musidora, restricted to 3-y-o fillies only, it provides a pure comparison. All are set to carry the same 9st weight. Traditionally regarded as a key trial for the Investec Oaks, six fillies have done the York/Epsom double, however, Covid-19 denied that chance to Love this season. The talented looking crop of 2020 may be eyeing a return to the Knavesmire for our own leading fillies contest, the Darley Yorkshire Oaks set for 20th August. At this time of year, in form stables or riders could be key, so check the stats table; the stand out being that John Gosden is chasing four Musidora titles from the last nine runnings, which of his trio is the most likely to oblige is your decision.

KNAVESMIRE TIP John Gosden has won this race five times in the last nine years and RICETTA, a daughter of Camelot who won going away in novice company over 1m at Newmarket last month, is expected to go very close. She is well fancied given she’s also bred to stay this longer trip. Pocket Square is more exposed than the selection but sets a decent standard on her juvenile Group 3 victory at Deauville, while chances are also given to Dubai Love and Rose Of Kildare.

The Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Distance
FACT FILE: Where does the race name come from?
Only two Northern-trained horses have won the Investec Derby; Pretender way back in 1869 and Dante. Both trained at Middleham, the latter by Matt Peacock to Classic success in 1945.
WHAT HOODOO? Only one horse beaten at York has ever won the Investec Derby, Workforce, second behind Cape Blanco in 2010, became a Blue Riband winner and so a hoodoo breaker.
OH LA LA TO BE SURE! After galloping to glory here in 2014 The Grey Gatsby landed the Prix du Jockey Club (or French Derby) at Chantilly. The following year saw Jack Hobbs second on the Knavesmire and at Epsom, but a Classic winner at The Curragh.
One mile, two furlongs and 56 yards (2,050 metres)
Prize money ÂŁ55,000
FIRST WINNER?
Bald Eagle justified favouritism in 1958 for Newmarket trainer Sir Cecil Boyd-Rochfort and his jockey Harry Carr.
Why is it usually considered a Classic Trial?
Simples - since 1958, ten York winners have won at Epsom; St Paddy (1960), Shirley Heights (1978), Shahrastani (1986), Reference Point (1987), Erhaab (1994), Benny The Dip (1997), North Light (2004), Motivator (2005), Authorized (2007) and Golden Horn (2015).
LUCK OF THE IRISH? ANY NEAR MISSES?
They drew a blank in the first 40 years and all bar Aidan O’Brien, still have; the Ballydoyle maestro scored with Saratoga Springs (1998), Septimus (2006), Black Bear Island (2009) then Cape Blanco (2010). The honour of both the Emerald Isle and Ballydoyle in particular rests with Cormorant today.
Tartan Bearer
Rheingold was beaten just inches by Roberto in 1972 and the Millennium winner Sakhee was only 150 yards from Derby victory before being headed late on by Sinndar. The 2008 renewal saw Tartan Bearer go down by just half a length to New Approach and Libertarian was fast finishing for his runners up berth.
LEADING TRAINERS?
The late Sir Henry Cecil
The late Sir Henry Cecil holds the record for having won this race seven times – Approval (1970), Lyphard’s Wish (1979), Hello Gorgeous (1980), Simply Great (1982), Claude Monet (1984), Reference Point (1987) and Tenby (1993). Sir Michael Stoute (Highest Ground), John Gosden (Encipher) and Aidan O’Brien (Cormorant) both have four wins in the race and will all be looking to close the gap on the great man.
LEADING RIDER?
Pat Eddery
The late Pat Eddery managed six wins whilst Ryan Moore has the best record of the current crop with three. Frankie Dettori would join him on that mark were Encipher to win this afternoon.
WHO ARE THE SPONSORS? Established in the year 1998, Al Basti Equiworld has, within a short span of time, become the pioneers in equine industry to Middle East and expanded across the globe. They have always recommended and introduced the best quality natural products which have had a very good response from the industry and are the distributors for leading companies such as Baileys Horse Feeds and Foran Equine Products.
How do local trainers fare? Poorly, until the turn of this decade. However, Libertarian broke the County’s duck for trainer Elaine Burke in 2013. The Grey Gatsby made it two in a row for the White Rose courtesy of Hambleton based, Kevin Ryan in 2014. He saddles Juan Elcano today. It was back to winning ways in 2017, when the Mark Johnston trained Permian prevailed. The Middleham-trained Thunderous will hope to strike for the same yard.

RACE DESCRIPTION The feature contest of this busy afternoon as a Group 2 contest. Much like our last race it is usually regarded through the prism of form ahead of the Investec Derby for, like the Epsom contest last weekend, this race is restricted to three-year olds and all are once again set to carry the same 9st weight. A return to York for the Group One Juddmonte International could be on the agenda for the winner, where Saturday’s champion, Serpentine, may await. To inform your choice why not study how they look in the Parade Ring, the television cameras do a pretty good job of showing them close up.

KNAVESMIRE TIP HIGHEST GROUND backed up the impression he made on his debut at Leicester when accounting for a well-regarded individual of John Gosden’s at Haydock last month, the two of them coming well clear of the remainder, and the son of Frankel is in the right hands to continue his progression. Juan Elcano’s fifth in the 2000 Guineas would set the form standard but he has to bounce back from a modest fourth at Royal Ascot, so perhaps the main danger could prove to be Newbury winner Al Madhar.

CARING FOR THE HORSES AT YORK RACECOURSE
Looking after the horses is a priority at York and every raceday there is a team of experienced equine vets on constant call. Much of their work is done before racing actually starts, being on hand to check horses over and reassure connections. As part of the Northern End Development the vets have their own office, a large treatment box and a dedicated “stock box” to help them assess and treat the stars of our show. If there is an incident during a race, prompt attention to horse and rider is provided by the modern ambulances, you will see them parked by the track, ready for a rapid response. Like most courses York will often use green screens during an incident, these offer privacy to those involved and their presence does not necessarily signify bad news. Keeping cool is important to a racehorse so you might see them using the horse showers in the new wash down area or the cold water provided in the parade ring and at every start. If a horse loses a shoe or ‘spreads a plate’, then there is a farrier at every start, as well as in their dedicated box by the pre parade ring, to put it right and let the racing commence. Remember a farrier shoes horses, a blacksmith makes gates or the impressive fretwork on the front of the future Weighing Room. As you watch from wherever you can, you can rest assured the horses are being well cared for by the racecourse team and their own dedicated stable staff.
