SKY BET SATURDAY 2020 F E A T U RING
THE SKY BET YORK STAKES ( G R O U P 2)
Welcome From wherever you are watching the racing action from York, a very warm welcome to Sky Bet York Stakes day. As we look forward to a consecutive weekend of racing “behind closed doors”, we now know the atmosphere in the stands will be very strange but that the action on the track itself is likely to be fast and furious. So far in this unusual season, all four of the Group Races have gone to Yorkshire Stables, as Mark Johnston took a day one double courtesy of Thunderous in the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante and Rose of Kildare in the Tattersalls Musidora, the fresh air of Yorkshire saw Eagles By Day soar to success in the John Smith’s Silver Cup for David O’Meara whilst the Kevin Ryan trained Queen Jo Jo made it a weekend to remember for Steve Parkin by winning last Sunday’s William Hill Summer Stakes. Add in a victory in the 61st John Smith’s Cup for Yorkshireman-in-exile, William Haggas, means it will be interesting to see if David O’Meara’s Lord Glitters or Mark Johnston’s Elarqam can extend the sequence by winning our feature. The latter is the defending champion in the Group Two (plus a third place in his three year old season) and his opposition includes the 2019 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante winner in Telecaster as well as a German Group One hero in Aspetar. It is a contest that showcased Twice Over before his return to land the Group One Juddmonte International, with the victor now a regular participant in our flagship contest, set this year for Wednesday 19th August. In a week that saw the sad passing of his Owner, Geoff Turnbull MBE, it would be a fitting tribute were Lord Glitters to add to the Queen Anne title of last year. Geoff was a fantastic supporter of York and racing in Yorkshire. He was the son of the miner who built an engineering empire and took great pleasure from his racehorses and stud operation. His success at the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival, Royal Ascot and around the racing globe was a wonderful reward for the time, money and love he put into our sport. I will miss him hugely and our condolences go to his widow, Sandra, and all his family and friends who will miss Geoff the most. All this afternoon’s races at York are run at prize money above the new industry approved values as part of a £1.5m investment by York into the sport. While the Government imposed restrictions on how we can operate are having a significant impact on our business and the services that we are able to provide on a raceday, we are trying to put our best foot forward and keeping the show on the road, in these challenging times for all areas of the sport. We remain appreciative for all owners and horsemen for their continued support and hope we will soon be able to welcome back spectators. As this week usually sees the extra excitement of the Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival, it is the right time to reflect on the social and indeed economic impact of the sport on our home county. Yorkshire has nine superb racecourses, over 120 training yards, the Northern Racing College, Jack Berry House and Goffs Bloodstock Sales employing many hundreds of skilled and dedicated people, all making for a successful industry in this county. Each racetrack has its own unique attributes, so we all look forward to a time when you can again enjoy what each has to offer in person. The unstinting support of Sky Bet has helped stage every race this weekend as well as several feature contests next month at enhanced prize money. We are hugely grateful to them and the European Breeder’s Fund for their backing. After this weekend, our preparations will go up a gear as we are very much looking forward to staging our flagship meeting, the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival (19-22 August) where some of the best horses from around the world look set to compete over four days of top class racing. Thank you for the support from afar this afternoon. William Derby, Chief Executive and Clerk of the Course: York Racecourse

Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90 rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race. Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW? THE SKY BET YORK STAKES Many of us spent hours during lockdown doing quizzes - well here’s a bonus racing question or two. Which British Group 2 race, first run in 2006, has never been won by an Aidan O’Brien trained inmate, has been won by a different jockey every year and has seen only one trainer land the spoils more than once? The answer - the Sky Bet York Stakes, the feature of this weekend’s two-dayer on the Knavesmire, and just like last week’s highlight, the John Smith’s Cup, to be run over the extended mile and a quarter. Ryan Moore was the first jockey name on the winner’s podium, and that with the only three-year-old so far to have claimed the prize - Best Alibi. That afternoon he was always too good for his rivals, and the Sir Michael Stoute inmate led after a furlong and stayed there. His form had been top class - second in the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante, sixth to Sir Percy in the Derby and third to Dylan Thomas in the Irish Derby. This is a race that, through the years, has always made up for in quality what it may lack in quantity. Saeed Bin Suroor is the only trainer to have won it twice.
Twice Over
Born out of the remains of the discontinued Scottish Derby the race has attracted some of the best, and in 2011 a notable double was achieved when Twice Over, ridden by Tom Queally for Sir Henry Cecil and Prince Khalid Abdullah, claimed the prize only to return three weeks later and seal his love affair with the Knavesmire by landing the Juddmonte International.
L to R: Tom Queally, Sir Michael Stoute & Prince Khalid Abdullah 8
And here’s another quiz question - who saddled the only Irish trained winner of the race? Step forward….wait for it…..Ken Condon, who just last weekend had a memorable Group 2 double highlighted by Romanised at The Curragh. Back in 2017, he and Shane Foley combined to burgle the big prize from the front, just scrambling home on Success Days from Danny Tudhope on Mondaliste by a nose.
L: Ken Condon receiving the trophy from Conor Grant of Sky Bet
R: Success Days
Every year this race throws up a great story. Here’s another quiz question - how many seven-year-olds have won Group 2 races? One, Tullius, ridden by Phil Makin, did just that in this race in 2015. The grey Thundering Blue landed it for Fran Berry two years ago and 12 months back the prize stayed in Yorkshire at last, courtesy of Elarqam, a lover of all things York since winning his maiden at the track in September 2017, trained by Mark Johnston and with Dane O’Neill on board. Set to defend today, the horse could become the first dual winner but the jockey hoodoo would remain as Jim Crowley takes the reins today. Looking at the other jockey bookings, there will be a new name on the Roll of Honour, but will Hollie Doyle (Regal Reality) continue her fine form and become the first female pilot on that list?

This contest is always intriguing and informative - the 2020 renewal is set to be no different. Based on an article by Mike Vince - originally published on sportinglife.com Elarqam, last year’s winner

CARING FOR THE HORSES AT YORK RACECOURSE
Looking after the horses is a priority at York and every raceday there is a team of experienced equine vets on constant call. Much of their work is done before racing actually starts, being on hand to check horses over and reassure connections. As part of the Northern End Development the vets have their own office, a large treatment box and a dedicated “stock box” to help them assess and treat the stars of our show. If there is an incident during a race, prompt attention to horse and rider is provided by the modern ambulances, you will see them parked by the track, ready for a rapid response. Like most courses York will often use green screens during an incident, these offer privacy to those involved and their presence does not necessarily signify bad news. Keeping cool is important to a racehorse so you might see them using the horse showers in the new wash down area or the cold water provided in the parade ring and at every start. If a horse loses a shoe or ‘spreads a plate’, then there is a farrier at every start, as well as in their dedicated box by the pre parade ring, to put it right and let the racing commence. Remember a farrier shoes horses, a blacksmith makes gates or the impressive fretwork on the front of the future Weighing Room. As you watch from wherever you can, you can rest assured the horses are being well cared for by the racecourse team and their own dedicated stable staff.

TOP JOCKEY AT YORK The Championship will be determined by the number of winners recorded and in the event of a tie, placed efforts will prove the deciding factor. The winner will receive the acclaimed Living North Trophy.

A message from Mr Malih L Al Basti Wherever in the world you are reading this message, your world has changed from what it was 12 months ago. We send our most sincere condolences to the many people across the globe have lost loved ones in the most painful of circumstances. Their world will never be the same. And our thanks to those who have bravely in many ways, tried to make our collective lives better in these challenging times. Our passion for horse racing has not changed. Our love of the thoroughbred has not changed. But how we all enjoy this magnificent sport has changed. And we have had to adapt. And so it is with great pride that Al Basti Equiworld Dubai, can continue to support The Chairman, Committee and every member of the York race-course team by putting our name to the 2020 Gr2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai, Gimcrack Stakes in late August and the Listed 6F Garrowby Stakes in September. We would like to thank the countless people behind the scenes who have made racing possible once more. We wish all owners, trainers, jockeys and stable staff the very best of luck today and throughout the season on The Knavesmire. Malih L Al Basti Owner and Founder Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai.

GEOFF TURNBULL MBE 1946 - 2020
Geoff, second from right, celebrating the success of Lord Glitters in the Group 3 Sky Bet Strensall Stakes
Earlier this week saw the sad passing of Geoff Turnbull, owner of two Group One winners as well as Elwick Stud. This afternoon, one of those big race winners, Lord Glitters, seeks to add the Group 2 Sky Bet York Stakes to a career tally of six triumphs that includes the Group One Queen Anne Stakes of last season. The riders in this race will wear black armbands as a mark of respect. His dark blue and pink diabolo colours were well known on racecourses around the world, as the David O’Meara trained Mondialiste, took top prizes at both Woodville in Canada and Arlington. Nearer to home, the Sky Bet Strensall was another high profile success, in partnership with regular rider, Danny Tudhope. Tributes have flowed in from those who knew him through the environmental engineering business he founded, the GT Group, as well as from his many friends in the bloodstock and racing worlds. Born in Hartlepool some 74 years ago, northern racing has lost a staunch supporter. We send our condolences to his wife, Sandra, as well as the many family and friends who will miss him most. FACT FILE: WHERE DOES IT FIT?
As both as a Group two and a mid summer affair, it can be a testing ground for thoroughbreds who might yet make the final step up to Group One company. Often they have looked impressive early in their careers and maybe suffered an injury or just lost their way a little. For others, it can mark a step out of handicap company before the glaring spotlight of Group One contests.
Distance 1m 2f 56y
Prize money £55,000
SOUND FAMILIAR? Like the feature race of the day down in Berkshire, it is a middle distance affair that lets the classic generation take on their elders.
HAVE ANY WINNERS GONE ON TO HIGHER GLORY?
Mukhadram went on to top-level success after winning here, the Coral-Eclipse his top-level breakthrough, while Sheikhzayedroad progressed to be a high-class stayer, winning the Group 1 Northern Dancer Stakes at Woodbine on his next start and taking Group 2 Doncaster Cup and British Champions Long Distance Cup success later on in his career. Plus the below dual success for the famous Pink & Green silks of Juddmonte Farms.
THE JUDDMONTE CONNECTION
Twice Over
A little out of the usual profile for this race, Twice Over is perhaps the most successful winner of the race - already a Group 1 Champion Stakes winner (twice) and Coral-Eclipse champion, Khalid Abdullah’s brilliant colt won the Sky Bet York Stakes on the way to Juddmonte International glory for the sponsor the following month. In becoming the first thoroughbred owned by the big race sponsor to take the August Blue Riband, there is a backhanded compliment to today’s contest, as the ideal prep race.
DOES AGE MATTER? Given that 12 of the 14 winners have either been four, five or six-year-olds, then you have to say the answer is yes... to an extent. The first winner, Best Alibi in 2006, was the only three-year-old to have won the race, while Tullius is the oldest winner of any Group 2, taking the 2015 renewal at the grand old age of seven. Four-year-olds have the best record, with five wins from the 14 runnings, while five-year-olds are close behind with four and those aged six have three wins despite none since 2012. Therefore, the stats look against the sole seven-year-old in the field today, Lord Glitters. Whilst the late start to this most unusual season may explain the absence of Tullius the classic generation, both here and at Ascot. 28
LEADING TRAINERS?
Saeed bin Suroor
It’s been a pretty even spread in the 14 runnings of the Sky Bet York Stakes, as the only trainer to have two to his name is Saeed bin Suroor, who saddled both the 2007 winner, Stage Gift, and Kirklees to win in 2009. With no runners from his Newmarket stable in this year’s contest, one of John Gosden, Sir Michael Stoute, Andrew Balding, Roger Charlton or Mark Johnston could join him on two victories if their charges were succesful today.
LEADING RIDER? Suprisingly, this race has not yet produced a dual winner from the saddle, but with the likes of Ryan Moore, Jamie Spencer, Frankie Dettori and Dane O’Neill already on the roll of honour, it’s surely only a matter of time before one of these pilots takes their second Sky Bet York Stakes title. However it will be a fifteenth and new name joining that quest this afternoon. Hollie Doyle would be the first female rider to take this particular title.
Hollie Doyle
WHO ARE THE SPONSORS? Sky Bet is the UK’s most popular online bookmaker. We’ve been making betting better for years and we’re home of RequestABet, First Race Specials and the Soccer Saturday Price Boost. We’re hugely passionate about sport which is why we sponsor the English Football League and have a longestablished partnership with York Racecourse, including being the founding and consistent sponsor of today’s big race.
HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?
In truth, not superbly - but that’s certainly not to say there hasn’t been any success for the White Rose County. Skipton-born William Haggas saddled Mukhadram to a 2013 victory, while Middleham’s Mark Johnston trains last year’s winner, Elarqam, who is back to defend his title, having also finished third as a three-year-old. The David O’Meara-trained Lord Glitters adds a fascinating second string to Yorkshire’s bow this afternoon, so providing a fitting tribute to owner, Geoff Turnbull, who passed away this week.

KNAVESMIRE NAP Last month’s Brigadier Gerard looks a key piece of form here, with ELARQAM and Telecaster finishing second and third respectively behind subsequent Prince Of Wales’s winner Lord North. Mark Johnston’s inmate, who won this race 12 months ago, subsequently failed to get home over 1m4f in the Hardwicke Stakes but dropping back in trip could help him confirm his superiority over P J McDonald’s mount, who ran away with a Longchamp Group 3 last time. Coral Gala second and third Aspetar and Fox Chairman can also show up well.
