SKY BET SUNDAY 2020 F E A T U RING
T H E B R I T I S H S T A L L I O N S T U D S EBF LYRIC STAKES (LISTED RACE) & THE SKY BET EXTENDED DASH
Welcome From wherever you are watching the racing action from York, a very warm welcome to a new Sunday fixture for us as we race alongside our friends at Ascot, Cartmel, Wolverhampton and The Curragh. The feature race today is our British Stallion Studs EBF Lyric Stakes, a top quality contest for middle distance fillies. This Listed contest has attracted some interesting fillies; Yorkshire handler Richard Fahey strikes a classical note with Eva Maria as well as stable mate, Craylands. A lot of attention will be directed to Franconia, a filly who carries the same Juddmonte silks as her illustrious sire, Frankel. From Clarehaven Stables, the Newmarket base of Champion Trainer, John Gosden, she seeks to follow stable mate Fanny Logan in winning this race. Last year’s winner progressed to win in Group company at Royal Ascot. All this afternoon’s races at York are run at prize money above the new industry approved values as part of a £1.5m investment by York into the sport. While the Government imposed restrictions on how we can operate are having a significant impact on our business and the services that we are able to provide on a raceday, we are trying to put our best foot forward and keeping the show on the road, in these challenging times for all areas of the sport. We remain appreciative to all owners, horsemen, sponsors and supporters for their continued support and hope we will soon be able to welcome back spectators. As this is our second consecutive weekend of racing “behind closed doors”, we now know the atmosphere in the stands will be very strange but that the action on the track itself is likely to be fast and furious. As this week usually sees the extra excitement of the Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival, it is the right time to reflect on the social and indeed economic impact of the sport on our home county. Yorkshire has nine superb racecourses, over 120 training yards, the Northern Racing College, Jack Berry House and Goffs Bloodstock Sales employing many hundreds of skilled and dedicated people, all making for a successful industry in this county. Each racetrack has its own unique attributes, so we all look forward to a time when you can again enjoy what each has to offer in person. The unstinting support of the European Breeders’ Fund has helped stage today’s feature this weekend as well as several feature contests next month at enhanced prize money. The same is true for Sky Bet so we are hugely grateful to them both for their backing. After this weekend, our preparations will go up a gear as we are very much looking forward to staging our flagship meeting, the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival (19-22 August) where some of the best horses from around the world look set to compete over four days of top class racing. Thank you for the support from afar this afternoon. William Derby, Chief Executive and Clerk of the Course: York Racecourse

Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90 rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race. Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

CARING FOR THE HORSES AT YORK RACECOURSE
Looking after the horses is a priority at York and every raceday there is a team of experienced equine vets on constant call. Much of their work is done before racing actually starts, being on hand to check horses over and reassure connections. As part of the Northern End Development the vets have their own office, a large treatment box and a dedicated “stock box” to help them assess and treat the stars of our show. If there is an incident during a race, prompt attention to horse and rider is provided by the modern ambulances, you will see them parked by the track, ready for a rapid response. Like most courses York will often use green screens during an incident, these offer privacy to those involved and their presence does not necessarily signify bad news. Keeping cool is important to a racehorse so you might see them using the horse showers in the new wash down area or the cold water provided in the parade ring and at every start. If a horse loses a shoe or ‘spreads a plate’, then there is a farrier at every start, as well as in their dedicated box by the pre parade ring, to put it right and let the racing commence. Remember a farrier shoes horses, a blacksmith makes gates or the impressive fretwork on the front of the future Weighing Room. As you watch from wherever you can, you can rest assured the horses are being well cared for by the racecourse team and their own dedicated stable staff.

RACE DESCRIPTION Formally a handicap, but many of the contenders perform well at a yet higher level of races. This time for 3-y-o+ horses, rated up to 105. The shorter distance of only six furlongs usually makes for a tight finish. Perhaps follow the close ups from the Parade Ring on your television screen before making a final selection.

KNAVESMIRE NAP GOLDEN APOLLO has had to play the bridesmaid in this contest in the last few seasons and the course-and-distance winner could have another day in the Knavesmire spotlight following some useful efforts so far this summer. George Bowen finished ahead of the selection when second at Pontefract earlier in the month and is considered, while Jonah Jones has a race like this in him and Frankie Detorri catches the eye in the saddle. Muscika (was also engaged to run at Ripon on Friday) was second over track and trip last weekend and was a runner-up in this contest last season, while Camacho Chief ia also noted arriving on the back of a victory at Doncaster and representing last year’s winning handler.

The British Stallion Studs EBF Lyric Fillies’ Stakes (Listed Race) One Mile, Two Furlongs About 56 Yards (2,000 metres) See page 43 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION Our sixth race is a part of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, Listed (like this one), Group 3, Group 2 and Group 1. This race is open to 3-y-o+ fillies and mares and is over a mile and a quarter. All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock. As racing recognises that younger horses, aged 3, are likely to be at a different stage of development, notice how Gold Wand is one to benefit by starting with a lower weight. Last year’s heroine, Fanny Logan, went on to win in Group Two company at Royal Ascot, so note the winner for the future big races. Looking for help? Then follow the racecourse tipster, who has marked his selections with a red bi plane.
LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: Fanny Logan (IRE) Trainer: John Gosden Jockey: P J McDonald Age/Weight: 3-8-9 Runners: 6 Price: 6/1 An excellent performance from Fanny Logan, who blew apart a good field in a first-time hood to win by two and a quarter lengths, giving trainer John Gosden his second winner of the race in the last five years.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Gold Wand readily brushed aside subsequent winner Portrush on her penultimate outing and she can easily be forgiven a lacklustre performance in the Investec Oaks last time. Dropping back in trip and returning to a more conventional track should see her run well, but FRANCONIA could prove a tough nut to crack for John Gosden, who saddled the winner of this contest 12 months ago. She was mightily impressive when winning a Listed contest at Newbury on her seasonal reappearance, form which has received a number of boosts since, and looks a top-level filly in the making. Godolphin’s Beautiful Illusion holds each-way claims.
