THE BETSAFE STAKES (HERITAGE HANDICAP)

Welcome A very warm welcome to our penultimate fixture, from wherever you are following the action. In a challenging year for so many people, we hope the participants in the three feature races backed by betsafe and other five fascinating contests, can bring some joy and entertainment into our lives. In our betsafe-backed feature races, one relocated from Ascot following the ravages of Storm Alex, some major southern operations have declared fancied runners. For example, Logician, 2019 winner of the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur over course and distance before Classic glory at Doncaster carries the famous green, pink & white silks of Prince Khalid Abdullah for Champion Trainer, John Gosden. A far northern challenge is mounted by the winner of the 59th John Smith’s Cup, Euchen Glen, for Jim Goldie. In this new digital world, if you want to keep up with the going and the Yorkshire weather, past, present and forecast; then visit our going page which connects direct to our weather station at the one furlong marker (under the windsock), click here https://www.yorkracecourse.co.uk/going-report.html For a wider sense of the atmosphere on course and behind the scenes content please do follow our social media channels. The three feature races are live on ITV3, whilst the team at Racing TV will bring you all the contests including on course insight from Chris Dixon and guests. Those choosing to have a flutter will be able to follow their fancy through their betting accounts with most major bookmakers, including today’s partner, https://m.betsafe.com/en/horse-racing We are incredibly grateful that the connections of the horses that have decided to bring them to the Knavesmire for us to enjoy and even try to pick out a winner. We hope those that are with us enjoy their lunch in the socially distanced Ebor Restaurant. Though the Parisian weather meant the Group One winners from the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival were unable to continue their York form, it was encouraging to see the leading lights of the Group Two Sky Bet City of York Stakes shine brightly through the gloom in the Group One Prix de la Foret. Congratulations to trainers William Haggas and John Quinn on the performances of One Master and Safe Voyage – it will be interesting to see if they reoppose at one of Qipco British Champions Day or the Breeders’ Cup! Indeed, equine stars based at Somerville Lodge have seen the stable to the fore in Charles Clinkard Top Trainer Championship. The Champion of 2017, William Haggas with seven victories, leads the field whilst Yorkshire based handlers, Mark Johnston and David O’Meara, sit just one behind the leader. Amongst the riders hoping to lift the Living North Top Jockey crown, Danny Tudhope is in hot pursuit of his third title with eight victories, three clear of the chasing pack. Writing of great riders, since we last raced, the racing world has mourned the passing of Pat Smullen - we send our deepest sympathies to Pat’s family and many friends in the racing world. We were honoured that Pat always spoke so fondly of his visits to York; we shall miss him and pay our own tribute on p14. The tremendous support of betsafe, Parsonage Country House Hotel, Langleys Solicitors, Constant Security, Jigsaw Sports Branding and the European Breeders Fund over this challenging period is hugely appreciated, they are all longstanding sponsors. The racing we have been able to stage this afternoon, with prize money above the new minimum values, is only possible due to the steadfast support of our sponsors, partners, loyal supporters and the many who contribute to making York a very special place. We are hugely grateful and appreciative of everyone’s support in these difficult times and look forward to the day when we can welcome everyone back to the Knavesmire. Thank you. I just hope you thoroughly enjoy the racing from the comfort of your armchair. William Derby, Chief Executive and Clerk of the Course: York Racecourse

A message from Mr Malih L Al Basti Wherever in the world you are reading this message, your world has changed from what it was 12 months ago. Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90 rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race. Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

See page 57 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION A competitive handicap for 2yo horses, run over the unusual trip of five and a half furlongs. Designed for close competition, the handicapper is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. The best will be the highest rated on past form, Rebel at Dawn here, so will carry more weight. Listen to the team on Racing TV to hear the expert’s view.

LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: AINSDALE Trainer: K R Burke Jockey: Ben Curtis Age/Weight: 2-8-8 Runners: 14 Price: 6/1J Sent off as the joint favourite for his second start in a nursery, Ainsdale justified his support as he powered away in the final furlong to win by four lengths under Ben Curtis.

KNAVESMIRE TIP A fiercely competitive nursery in which the tentative vote goes to Karl Burke’s REBEL AT DAWN, who has taken on some tough assignments this year and could benefit from the drop into handicap company. Imperium Blue won a novice contest at Ripon for Jamie Osborne and is interesting now debuting for Nigel Tinkler, who has excelled with his juveniles this term. Hey Mr was third behind the last-named in North Yorkshire but could narrow the gap on revised terms this afternoon.

A LEGEND OF THE TURF PAT SMULLEN 1977 - 2020 All of us at York Racecourse have been deeply saddened by the death of one of flat racings great Champions, Pat Smullen, who lost his two-year battle with illness last month at the age of just 43. Smullen’s CV in the saddle stands comparison with the best - 9 Irish Champion Jockey titles, the cherished Anglo-Irish Derby double with Harzand in 2016, and countless big races in his beloved Ireland and around the world. Pat’s achievements on the Knavesmire included double success at the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival on Pale Mimosa. First successful in the Sir Henry Cecil European Breeders Fund Galtres Stakes of 2012 - almost inevitably trained by Dermot Weld, she returned two years later to beat Estimate, by then a Gold Cup winner for HM The Queen in the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup. His haul of big race wins also included Time Test, in the famous green, pink & white colours of Prince Khalid Abdulla, for trainer Roger Charlton, in the 2016 Sky Bet York Stakes.

Time Test taking the Group 2 Sky Bet York Stakes, 2016

But it was another York winner that perhaps featured only behind his classic success in terms of his best rides, amongst the enormous number of tributes he has rightly received. At the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival of 2014 Pat produced one of the outstanding Knavesmire rides to land the one-mile Clipper Logistics Handicap on Short Squeeze, trained by Hugo Palmer. He was drawn 18 in a 19 strong field - a challenge in itself and however well he was going, he was repeatedly forced to switch in trying to challenge, never resorted to ‘the persuader’ and got up in the final strides. It was the sort of jockey masterclass that every young pilot should be obliged to watch.

Pat guides Short Squeeze to victory in the Clipper Logistics Stakes of 2014

Pat inspired thousands by his battle with cancer in his final two years - several of our team were thrilled to be at The Curragh for his Race of Champions won by Sir AP McCoy, an initiative which raised an extraordinary seven figure sum for Irish Cancer Charities - but Pat’s support of fund raising also struck closer to home. As York regulars know we are proud to stage the annual ‘Ride of their Lives’ race as the finale to Macmillan Charity Day each June, and as part of their preparation the riders have a walk of the course on the eve of the Dante Festival. In 2019 Pat, accompanied by his close friend, Fran Berry, made the journey to support and offer his wisdom to Abi Stock, one of the riders who had lost her father to the same cruel disease he was battling. Very few knew that Pat would not be staying for racing as he was straight back to Dublin for treatment. A typically understated act of kindness by the man. All of us at York Racecourse send our deepest condolences to Pat’s widow Frances and their three children. We will always remember Pat as a Champion in the saddle, and an even better human being - we couldn’t be more proud that he counted York as his favourite English track.

WHAT’S IN A NAME? The use of traditional names for the leading races, known as “Pattern Handles” often provides an insight in to the history and geography of racing. Most people will know the story, that the Epsom Derby itself was a race named after the toss of a coin between the 12th Earl of Derby and his friend, Sir Charles Bunbury (who now also has a contest in his honour at Newmarket) way back in 1780. Others will recognise the local area of York known as “Nunthorpe” that has been given to the fastest race of the season here on the Knavesmire. In a sport that takes its pedigree seriously, it is important to be able to track the leading races over the generations, hence the adoption of these traditional titles. Of course they now add a lustre to the generous support of the commercial sponsors who back them and help maintain the prize money. These titles also help identify races when they have to shift between racecourses, the race conditions (age, distance and such) remain the same but the venue can change when needs must. Racing followers will have seen this earlier in the season as the efforts to stage as many famous contests as possible in this contracted season saw some of them take to the road. The William Hill King Charles II switching from its Newmarket home to be run here at York in July, as one example. This week, it was the weather that caused the relocations, so, rescheduled from the ravages of Storm Alex last Saturday, where does the name of today’s Group 3, the betsafe Cumberland Lodge originate from? Students of architecture would be quick with the answer, as it comes from the 17th century, Grade II Listed house that stands in Windsor Great Park, so sharing the home turf of Ascot Racecourse. Historically, Cumberland Lodge was home to the Rangers of the Great Park, including Prince Christian and Princess Helena, daughter of Queen Victoria in the late 19th century. Though the naming of The Lodge comes from William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland and second son of King George II, who took up the Rangership in 1746. For those who like their history intertwined with bloodstock, the house was also the birthplace of the great stallion, Eclipse. Since 1947 the building has done service as an educational institution that now empowers people, through dialogue and debate, to tackle the causes and effects of social division. Though it maybe more familiar to cinema viewers as the backdrop to key scenes in the Oscar winning film, The Kings Speech. So a race first run in 1951 has a name to evoke glories more distant, who will add their name to a role of honour that already includes the 2006 St Leger at York winner, Sixties Icon, we’ll know by around 1.37pm this afternoon.

RACE DESCRIPTION A welcome late transfer after Storm Alex scuppered its staging last Saturday, this race is part of the Pattern pyramid (think divisions in football) which denotes the best contests, Listed), Group 3 (such as this), Group 2, rising to Group 1. This means it is in the top 200 races in the land. To keep it competitive, there is an allowance given to younger horses, note how Highland Chief benefits. A similar reduction for fillies would apply, but none have taken up the gauntlet today. The betting market will be all about the 2019 winner of the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur over course and distance, as Logician went on to land the St Leger at Doncaster.

The unbeaten four-year-old won the St Leger in 2019, and can take this before moving towards better things for John Gosden. Highland Chief only found Pyledriver too good in the Great Voltigeur here in August and could give the selection something to ponder, just ahead of Desert Encounter, who will likely be produced late.

KNAVESMIRE TIP CROWNTHORPE is only 1lb higher than when landing a cosy success in this last season and conditions look perfect for Richard Fahey’s five-year-old to repeat that feat, with Connor Murtagh removing a useful 3lb. Firmament was second on that occasion and the course regular is one of four for David O’Meara, with his quartet also including the hat-trick seeking Hortzadar, who accounted for the in-form Plantadream (second) when scoring at Goodwood last time. Hesslewood has thrived with cut in the ground of late and is taken seriously, while Hajjam, Dawaaleeb and recent winners Scottish Summit and Garden Oasis all arrive in good order.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Favorite Moon bounced back to form in a first-time tongue-tie at Haydock last month and an 8lb rise still probably underestimates William Haggas’ gelding. That said, his worst effort came over this C&D in the Melrose so a note of caution is advised. The vote, therefore, goes to ZEEBAND with the galloping nature of the Knavesmire likely to benefit him and he appears capable of further progression on just his fifth start. Ispahan, who finished second to the selection at Thirsk last time, and Prince Alex, who is on a five-timer, are feared most.

Distance: 5f Race Type: Novice Prize Money: £15,000 Age: 2 Stalls: Centre

Five Furlongs (1,000 metres) See page 57 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION This race is limited to 2yo horses that have are still learning their trade and is over five furlongs. All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock. This race also qualifies under the Plus 10 bonus scheme. Those who have discovered the winner’s enclosure already, carry an extra burden, witness Shalaa Asker who was victorious at Chelmsford last month. Fillies also get a helping hand, notice Radrizzani. The advice is to rely on your choice of the two ‘p’s; pedigree or pin!

LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: Art Power Trainer: Tim Easterby Jockey: David Allan Age/ Weight: 2-9-2 Runners: 9 Price: 9/1 Art Power stepped up on his debut third at Newcastle to run out an impressive five length winner, marking himself down as a smart prospect for Tim Easterby to look forward to.

KNAVESMIRE TIP COTTAM LANE confirmed the promise that he displayed on his debut by winning easily at Beverley last month and Kevin Ryan’s colt has to be given the utmost respect on the back of that performance. Showalong and Shalaa Asker are other previous winners who merit respect, while Rose All Day is entitled to improve for her debut experience. Any market support for Good Listener or Radrizzani on their racecourse debuts would have to be noted.

6th Race 3.45 The Parsonage Hotel And Cloisters Spa Stakes

Distance: 5f Race Type: Handicap Rating: 76-95 Prize Money: £15,000 Age: 3+ Stalls: Centre

Five Furlongs (1,000 metres) See page 57 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION Still a handicap this time for 3yo+ horses, at the other extreme of distance, just five furlongs. “Offer a chance for everyone” is a good maxim for those planning races and in this contest the upper rating of 95 means that though these are still quality horses, they won’t have their spotlight stolen by a real superstar. Need some help? Perhaps an in-form yard is your answer, so check the table of recent performances.

KNAVESMIRE TIP COPPER KNIGHT hasn’t quite been at his best for most of the season, but he is 13lb below his last winning mark now for Tim Easterby and cut in the ground won’t deter him as much as others in this field. The six-year-old is a four-time course winner and could just prove too good for the lesser-exposed Celsius, who wouldn’t want much more rain to fall. Lihou arrives here in top form and could run another big race.

CARING FOR THE HORSES AT YORK RACECOURSE

Looking after the horses is a priority at York and every raceday there is a team of experienced equine vets on constant call. Much of their work is done before racing actually starts, being on hand to check horses over and reassure connections. As part of the Northern End Development the vets have their own office, a large treatment box and a dedicated “stock box” to help them assess and treat the stars of our show. If there is an incident during a race, prompt attention to horse and rider is provided by the modern ambulances, you will see them parked by the track, ready for a rapid response. Like most courses York will often use green screens during an incident, these offer privacy to those involved and their presence does not necessarily signify bad news. Keeping cool is important to a racehorse so you might see them using the horse showers in the new wash down area or the cold water provided in the parade ring and at every start. If you spot a mist cloud behind the saddling boxes that means the horses are benefiting from the cooling power of the special water-misting fans. If a horse loses a shoe or ‘spreads a plate’, then there is a farrier at every start, as well as in their dedicated box by the pre parade ring, to put it right and let the racing commence. Remember a farrier shoes horses, a blacksmith makes gates or the impressive fretwork on the front of the future Weighing Room. As you enjoy your meeting, you can rest assured the horses are being well cared for by the racecourse team and their own dedicated stable staff.

7th Race 4.20 The Jigsaw Sports Branding EBF Novice Auction Stakes (Plus 10 Race)

Distance: 1m Race Type: Novice Prize Money: £11,500 Age: 2 Stalls: Inside Rail

About One Mile (1,500 metres) See page 57 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION Race seven is limited to 2yo over seven furlongs, so those still in their first season. To encourage the breeding industry and to create competition, it is also limited to horses bought at one or more (specified) sales. Exactly which Sale and quite what their purchase price actually was, then serves to determine their allocated weight this afternoon. The theory is that market forces have judged their genes and set the competition accordingly, so today may show up a bargain. This race also qualifies under the Plus 10 bonus scheme and if you don’t want to concern yourself with all that complexity, then it is probably “favourite colours” time.

LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: Sword Beach Trainer: Eve Johnston Houghton Jockey: Tom Marquand Age/ Weight: 2-9-3 Runners: 11 Price: 4/1 There was a thrilling finish to the novice auction stakes as Sword Beach showed a good attitude under Tom Marquand to come out on top by a head for a first career success.

KNAVESMIRE TIP The form of Jakacan’s second at Thirsk took a big boost when the winner followed up in a valuable Newmarket contest last weekend and Declan Carroll’s charge must enter calculations, while Echo Beach and Silvestris are that bit more experienced and warrant respect. Arthur’s Realm and Celtic Empress are other form players with claims, and Arctic Emperor shouldn’t be overlooked on debut, but ORGETORIX shades the verdict. There was much to like about his opening third at Newbury, where showing he handles soft ground, and this extra furlong is likely to suit.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Richard Fahey representative Zip has been knocking loudly on the door and wouldn’t be winning out of turn if getting his head in front after landing the silver medal on his last three outings. For win purposes, however, preference is for TRUE BLUE MOON, who is taken to defy a 3lb rise for winning over this trip at Ayr to notch a double. Mr Orange isn’t weighted out of this if seeing out an additional furlong, while Ice Eagle could also take a hand now cutting back from a mile.
