Welcome A very warm welcome to the Knavesmire for the first time in a long time. I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable and successful day, we are delighted to see you return. We thoroughly appreciate your steadfast and wonderful support during the last 18 months. Today marks only the third staging of our newest Pattern race, the Group 3 William Hill Brontë Cup. Offering a £65,000 prize for fillies and mares, it is part of a wider plan to encourage the best female stayers to remain in training in Britain, beyond their three-year-old careers. With two mares from Ireland and UK runners who have performed well in Pattern company, this looks a top-quality renewal. The feature handicap is a valuable sprint over five furlongs, again generously supported by William Hill; a packed field of speedsters, including some familiar names to racing fans. None more so than Copper Knight, who won his fifth race at York just nine days ago, making him one of several who show the initials “CD” adjacent to their name in the racecard meaning “Course and Distance winner”. With nine of the intended field of 14 trained in Yorkshire, in addition to Hurricane Ivor trained by Yorkshireman in exile, William Haggas, the odds are in favour of a white rose winner. They will hurtle down the 1,000 metres in under a minute and all you have to do is unearth the winner - good luck and do refamiliarize yourself with them in the Parade Ring beforehand. In Olympic year, think Usain Bolt rather than Mo Farah! Our sixth race today, remembers the late Reg Bond, a tremendous supporter of York Racecourse and Yorkshire racing, as well as being a shining light for the joy of being an owner-breeder. He is much missed, we wish his friends and family the very best of days. During the winter York was honoured to see our flagship race of the season, the Juddmonte International, ranked as the Longines World’s Best Race 2020 based on year end global ratings. The prize fund for this race was recently announced as back at the £1m purse of pre covid times. That is an indication of the commitment of York Racecourse and its tremendous supporters to back our sport and so bring top class horses to the Knavesmire. This can only be achieved through the support of racegoers and of our sponsors. Many thanks for your attendance and to William Hill, Hudson Moody, the family of Reg Bond and the European Breeders’ Fund, for their generous backing. Whilst we hope that today will feel as normal as possible, we thank you in advance for your understanding about some of the protocols that have had to be adopted to meet the Government guidelines, to both keep you safe and allow racing to go ahead. Many thanks again for your support and best wishes for an enjoyable, even profitable, day. I hope you can join us when we next race in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 June. William Derby, Chief Executive and Clerk of the Course: York Racecourse

CARING FOR THE HORSES Looking after the horses is a priority at York so every raceday there is a team of equine vets on call. Much of their work is done before racing actually starts, being on hand to check horses over. If there is an incident, prompt attention to horse and rider is provided by the modern ambulances. Like most courses York will often use green screens during an incident, these offer privacy to those involved and their presence does not necessarily signify bad news. If a horse loses a shoe then there is a farrier at every start and in the pre parade ring, to put it right.
RETAIL THERAPY Feel in need of some retail therapy? Why not visit one of our retail partners. Blue Rider Gallery - equestrian art specialists. (opposite the Princess Mary bar)
DISABLED RACEGOERS Facilities such as disabled toilets and viewing platforms for racing and concert viewing are clearly signed. Our raceday stewards will be pleased to offer directions and assistance. The Racecourse Office Team will also be happy to help and can provide an access guide and map. Rachel Crabtree is a senior member of the team with special responsibility in this area.
FREE WIFI 1) Search and select yorkracecourse 2) Enter your own email address and home postcode to register 3) You’ll be directed to our home page featuring our partners for today, then just surf away. Given the nature of any WiFi network there will be peaks of demand by both time and location - some websites will not be available.
SHUTTLE BUS A limited shuttle bus service to York station will collect from Knavesmire Road, at the northern end of the racecourse. The service is provided by a commercial operator. A return service operates on raceday mornings.
TAXI/PRIVATE HIRE PICK-UP POINT There is a taxi pick up point at the Northern end of the racecourse adjacent to Campleshon Road. Private Hire vehicles will meet pre-booked customers, also at the Northern End.
WHERE CAN I PLACE A BET
The tote will be pleased to take your bet at their many windows or look out for a passing courier. Remember to try the small stake-big payout bets such as the Jackpot, Placepot or Trifecta. The William Hill Betting Shop on the Melrose Stand Lawn offers a full SP service, so bets on racing and the wider sporting world. The colour of the main betting ring returns, set in front of the Knavesmire Stand, take on the challenge. Contactless payment is available for all the above options. Good luck.
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES York Racecourse always strives to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However, an incident may occur which is beyond our control. We have employed professionally-trained and experienced stewards. In the event of a situation which requires a partial or full evacuation of the stands, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will usher you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and quietly. If we are unable to re-occupy the stands, you may be invited to return to your car or coach. Departure from car and coach parks will be under the direction of the Police. The foregoing is a precautionary tale. 11
MUSLEY BANK REACHES A MILESTONE Based at Musley Bank on the outskirts of Malton, the remarkable team headed by trainer, Richard Fahey, have now cruised past the 3,000 winners mark. The landmark was achieved at Ayr on 12th May with success 3,001 coming on the opening day of the Dante Festival. Long time stable jockey and friend, Paul Hanagan, was in the saddle for both Hong Kong Harry in Scotland and Mr Lupton on the Knavesmire. Our warmest congratulations to all involved, past and present. With nine Top trainer Awards here at York, Zip (2.05pm), Viceregent (3.15pm) and Right Action (5.25pm) today, deserve every consideration.

Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90 rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race. Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

FACES BEHIND THE RACES
BRIDGET GUERIN
• What is your current role at York Racecourse? Chairman
• How many years have you worked at York Racecourse?
About 10 years- not counting my distant holiday jobs behind a tote window!
• What is your raceday role?
Looking after everyone and trying to make sure that racegoers, sponsors, box holders, annual badgeholders (when we’re allowed them), owners, trainers and the home team all have a fantastic experience, each and every raceday.
• At the end of the raceday, tell us what makes it a good one?
That the horses all come home safe and healthy, that the owners (both winners and losers) come away thinking that they want to come back to York and that the Yorkshire crowds provide everyone with an amazing atmosphere. That makes me very happy.
• How did you become involved in racing at York?
My childhood ambition was to be allowed to go racing at York with my teenage friends for the Ebor Festival. Then my first ever job was working behind the Tote windows during my University holidays.
• What local tip would you give a visitor to the city of York
Come and try our Stableside accommodation which is close to the city centre and is very comfortable and reasonably priced.
• Give us a hidden Gem of the Knavesmire
The John Carr Stand
The original stand which was built on the track at York for Lord Rockingham in the mid-18th century was the first ever stand on any racecourse anywhere in the world. It was designed by renowned York architect, John Carr and is now a bar on the Champagne lawn.
• Which York Raceday would you attend if you were not working? I love the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival!
• What has been your favourite winning performance at York?
Our sprinter, Excessable, winning the Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Stakes in 2017. We are still trying to win another race at York. It is very difficult to do!
• Who is your favourite racehorse, past or present?
Brigadier Gerard was my idol. I came to York to see him run in the Benson and Hedges Gold Cup (now the Juddmonte International) in 1972 where he was unexpectedly beaten by Roberto.
• If you could share a table in the Voltigeur with 5 people from racing over the years who would they be?
My father, who encouraged my interest in racing, Peter Easterby who I have known since my pony club days, Jonjo O’ Neil who was my hero as a jockey, Dana Brudenell Bruce who was a great friend and owner breeder and Sir Henry Cecil, the most inspirational trainer.
• What is the funniest, printable thing that you have seen/heard on the racecourse?
Mick Easterby musing that the paddock at York might be a good place to scatter his ashes one day but my colleagues said they would be worried that they might kill the grass!
Excessable’s moment of York glory

RACE DESCRIPTION Welcome to the weekend at York. We start with a handicap. Such races are designed for close competition with the handicapper as the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance, seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. The best will be the highest rated horse and so will carry more weight, Escobar is rated as the top weight in this one. So pit your wits against the handicapper – if you need some help look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, look how Escobar carries both. Good luck in starting as you’d wish to go on!

KNAVESMIRE TIP BELIEVE IN LOVE was mightily progressive as a three-year-old, winning five of her last six starts for Roger Varian, and could have more to offer now that she is a year older. The Make Believe filly ended her campaign with a gutsy Group 3 win in France, and won’t mind whichever way this ground turns. Mighty Blue hammered the field in Listed company at Gowran Park earlier this month, while Makawee likes it here and stays this trip stoutly.

A message from Mr Malih L Al Basti As the founding owner of Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the 2021 season at the magnificent York Racecourse on the Knavesmire. The past year has thrown many challenges at the racing world globally and I salute those behind the scenes who have worked tirelessly to keep our sport alive throughout those dark days. It is great to be back approaching some form of normality here at York. And so it is with great pride that Al Basti Equiworld Dubai, can continue to support The Chairman, Committee and every member of the York racecourse team by putting our name to three Group 2 races in 2021: the Gr2 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton Stakes, the Gr2 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante Stakes and the Gr2 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack Stakes. We wish all owners, trainers, jockeys and stable staff the very best of luck today and throughout this new season on The Knavesmire. Malih L Al Basti Owner and Founder Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai.

RACE DESCRIPTION We return to handicap conditions and to freshen the available pool, it is open to those who are aged four-years-old and over. “Offer a chance for everyone” is a good maxim for those planning races and in this contest the upper rating of 80 means that though these ones are still quality performers, they won’t have their spotlight stolen by a real superstar. If a horse is ridden by an apprentice then it is given an allowance (reduction) in weight which varies depending on the record of the particular rider, notice how Wise Eagle shoulders 3lb less weight as his partner is apprentice Billy Garritty.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Green Planet is likely to prove a lot happier on a flatter track having become unbalanced on his most recent start when second at Lingfield earlier in the month. The vote, though, goes to VICEREGENT as he is expected to improve from his return outing at Thirsk and the son of Nathaniel boasts winning form on soft ground. Dubai Instinct’s recent third at the course can see him enter calculations along with Spanish Kiss, who makes his turf debut, and Live Your Dream.

See page 60 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION The most valuable handicap of the afternoon, remember the best on past performance will be the highest rated horse and so will carry more weight than the lowest rated horse; Makanah, Count d’Orsay and Hurricane Ivor are the trio at the top of the weights on this occasion. Five furlongs is the shortest distance in UK racing so don’t blink as they flash home. Looking for help? Follow the red bi plane through the card for the racecourse tipster’s recommendations.

KNAVESMIRE TIP COPPER KNIGHT had Mulzim (second), Mondammej (third), Sunday Sovereign (ninth), Dave Dexter (10th) and Count D’Orsay (15th) all behind when landing a similar C&D event earlier in the month and he could confirm that form en route to notching a sixth course victory. The third looked a little unlucky that day and is a big danger, while William Haggas’ French import Hurricane Ivor also merits consideration. Pendleton and Zargun both arrive following solid placed efforts and are other names to note.

WHEN COPPER TURNS TO GOLD Trained locally by Tim Easterby, Copper Knight is set to take his fifteenth spin on the Knavesmire in the 3.50pm race today. Remarkably, the seven-year-old has won on an amazing five of those visits, most recently at the Dante Festival this season. His owner, Tony Denham is part of three generations that follow the sport - they’ll be hoping for lucky number six today.

RACE DESCRIPTION This one is limited to the babies of the game, aged just two; they don’t have much if any track experience hence the term “novice”. All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock. After all that, perhaps use your choice of the “Ps”, pedigree or pin to place your bet.

KNAVESMIRE TIP SHALADAR faced an uphill battle on debut as soon as he ducked right out of the gates but, despite this hindrance, he ran on to hit the line strong over 5f. The Kevin Ryan-trained juvenile is a half-brother to Bravado, who won on his opening two starts, and providing he gets a clean break the son of Shalaa could take all the beating now stepping up in trip. Robjon is impossible to discount on the hunt for successive victories, while Hot Diggity Dog met traffic on his sole outing and could be a danger.

KNAVESMIRE TIP A competitive event which could go the way of BLU BOY, who made it back-to-back victories in convincing fashion at Beverley last month. The form of that race looks solid and gives hope that Edward Bethell’s charge, who always does his best work towards the end of his races, can defy an 11lb hike. Yorkshire Lady and Maison de York also arrive on the back of victory, while Northern Express and the consistent Cosmos Raj are foolish to rule out.

Distance: Race Type: Rating: Prize Money: Age: Stalls:
7f Handicap 61-80 £11,200 4+ Farside
About Seven Furlongs (1,400 metres) See page 60 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION No easy out, as another ticklish handicap sets our final race, only this time the spotlight falls on the jockeys as this race is limited to gentleman amateur riders, see how they are all called “Mr.” So whilst the horses are in the handicap band up to 90, the real weight differences reflect the achievements of the jockey. There is a sliding scale as measured by winners; a partnership receives a 7lb benefit if the human half is looking for a first victory, as would be the case for Mr. Henry Main aboard Colonel Whitehead. At the other end of the experience spectrum, Mr. Simon Walker affords no respite for Harbour Vision having won eleven of last fourteen Gentleman’s Flat Championships. Caviar or cod roe tonight, place your bets.

KNAVESMIRE TIP SUPER DEN remains unexposed after just five starts for Terry Kent and put in the best effort of his career so far when second at Doncaster on soft ground in November. The four-year-old could receive a strong pace to aim at here and is fancied to get off the mark. Parys Mountain deserves plenty of respect as a past winner on the Knavesmire, while Harbour Vision shaped with promise when fifth at Wetherby four weeks ago and Simon Walker rides.
