Welcome A very warm welcome to York for an autumnal raceday with both seven competitive races backed by William Hill and the Ernest Cooper Macmillan Ride of Their Lives. I hope you have a successful and thoroughly enjoyable day. The afternoon gets underway at 1.05pm with the Ernest Copper Macmillan Ride of Their Lives. This race sees twelve intrepid amateur riders realising a dream by riding on the Knavesmire, while fundraising for Macmillan Cancer Support. The riders have already raised over £140,000 and have undertaken months of training and fundraising to get to this point. Do cheer them on and read more about them and about how to donate to them on page 28 & 29. York’s partnership with Macmillan stretches back over 50 years and through everyone’s collective efforts has now raised over £9 million. Many thanks for your support. We have some exciting racing under Rules today, made possible by both your support and the backing of our partners and main sponsor, William Hill. There are plenty of familiar names with a number of today’s runners having both run and won a number of times on the Knavesmire. Indeed, in the second race at 2.40pm, nine-year-old Firmament is making his 82nd racecourse appearance and 15th visit to the Knavesmire! Gallop Racing and David O’Meara’s stalwart has been placed on nine previous occasions here, including three wins. Today marks the retirement of Press Association and York stalwart Jim Donnelley after 50 years of service to the sport – we wish Jim and all his friends and supporters a tremendous day. Listen out for the New York Brass Band, enjoy a Ged Bell burger or pork pie, share a bottle of Ayala Champagne for £43, whatever, it is just our pleasure to see you back enjoying the racing and experience on a York raceday. Many thanks for your support and have a fantastic time.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES York Racecourse always strives to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However, an incident may occur which is beyond our control. We have employed professionally-trained and experienced stewards. In the event of a situation which requires a partial or full evacuation of the stands, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will usher you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and quietly. If we are unable to re-occupy the stands, you may be invited to return to your car or coach. Departure from car and coach parks will be under the direction of the Police. The foregoing is a precautionary tale. 11
A RACECOURSE FOR ALL
We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed. FAQS Is there disabled and blue badge parking? Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses? Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site. Can I bring a wheelchair? Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Can I bring somebody to help? Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today. Are there wheelchair viewing platforms? Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most. What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme? Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where. Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters? Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you. Wheelchair height betting? Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help. There was one more thing? Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area.

Faces Behind The Races
AMY SWALES
Q. WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT ROLE AT YORK RACECOURSE?
A. I Am The Marketing & Sponsorship Manager Q. HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU WORKED AT YORK RACECOURSE? A. My first season was as a Pink Lady in 2007, and I’ve worked full time at the course for 11 years. Although there are many who have worked here much longer than me!
Q. WHAT IS YOUR RACEDAY ROLE AT YORK RACECOURSE? I head up all our social media content on a raceday, as well as delivering extra raceday events such as Ebor Fashion Lawn, family activities on September Sunday and geese herding on Countryside Raceday! When I first started at the course, social media didn’t really exist and I spent more time in the Parade Ring looking after our sponsors.
Q. OUTSIDE THE RACEDAYS AT YORK, WHAT DO YOU DO THE REST OF THE YEAR? A. We get asked this question a lot! And I plan, plan and plan. Our racing season is busy and we plan operationally in the winter and deliver over the summer months. I always say my brain hurts in the winter and my legs ache in the summer. Q. HOW DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED IN RACING AT YORK A. I originally applied for work experience whilst studying Politics at York University. It was either a Masters in Post-War Reconstruction or a placement on the BHA Graduate Programme – I chose the latter and never looked back. I think my family were relieved at the safer option choice!
Q. WHAT LOCAL TIP WOULD YOU GIVE A VISITOR TO THE CITY OF YORK? A. Do a little research before you come, about the food and places you want to visit. There is so much to do so it is best to plan a little before you come. Q. GIVE US A HIDDEN GEM OF THE KNAVESMIRE? A. The Gimcrack Afternoon Tea! Without a doubt. Q. WHICH YORK RACEDAY WOULD YOU ATTEND IF YOU WERE NOT WORKING? A. The first day of the WELCOME TO YORKSHIRE EBOR FESTIVAL, my parents come every year and it would be nice to join them. Q. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE WINNING PERFORMANCE AT YORK? A. Sea the Stars winning the Juddmonte International in 2009. It was my first season in my full-time position at York, he didn’t get the best of starts and I remember the exact feeling I got when he entered the Parade Ring. My first goosebump moment when working at York – but certainly not my last. Q. WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE RACEHORSE, PAST OR PRESENT? A. Sea the Stars for the reasons above, as well as Kingsgate Native. He won the Coolmore Nunthorpe in 2007 as a two-year-old, no other juvenile has won the race since. He stayed in training for a long time so it was always nice to welcome him back to the Knavesmire – I was also delighted when I discovered he was at the British Racing School when I visited to do a presentation (as pictured above). Q, IF YOU COULD SHARE A TABLE IN THE VOLTIGEUR WITH 5 PEOPLE FROM RACING OVER THE YEARS WHO WOULD THEY BE?
16
A. Can I have the whole of the Pink Lady team here at York? After starting out on the team they have been a great support to me over the years and there is always some great stories to tell!

WHERE CAN I PLACE A B T
There are various points and different ways to bet here at York. 1. Place a bet with the tote. 2. You can go to the betting ring. 3. Use a William Hill Retail SP Betting Shop. With over 300 tote betting points located around the course, there is always one nearby. The main betting ring is situated in front of the Knavesmire Stand with an additional ring in Course Enclosure and sometimes a third set of bookies on Bustardthorpe Lawn. There are three William Hill Retail SP betting shops at York; one at the southern end of the stands, the second on the ground floor of the Knavesmire Stand and the third being the refurbished shop on the ground floor of the Melrose Stand. In addition, racegoers in the Clocktower Enclosure will find a William Hill Retail SP facility underneath the clock tower. PLACING YOUR BET WITH A BOOKMAKER Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/ her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker. You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe. COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a stewards enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 59 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late Pay Claims should be sent to Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, 3a, Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambs, PE27 4WY.
WAYS TO BET STRAIGHT EACH WAY
Win Only A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/ she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed. In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90 rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race. Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

After a long build up, it’s here! Cancer affects everyone and my family is no different, I hope they will look down fondly today. I was keen to raise money for this important cause whilst getting the opportunity to ride on the Knavesmire. I have been involved in the breeding of thoroughbreds and selecting yearlings at the sales (the future racing stars) yet had never ridden a racehorse. I had ridden competitively eventing, dressage and show jumping all my life, so this seemed like the perfect challenge to bring the two together!

I am riding today in honour of my mother who has been fighting cancer for the last three years and putting a brave face on it. Today marks the culmination of months of early starts, aching muscles, and more than mildly embarrassing moments in the saddle. But it has also been one of the most rewarding journeys I ever embarked on, filled with fun, passionate if not slightly eccentric characters who have all made the experience fascinating and unique. If they will have me back after today’s race, I shall look forward to more glorious mornings on the gallops…

My friend Sarah lost her dad to cancer, and I am doing it in honour of him. He did a huge amount of fundraising for Macmillan, to give something back to Macmillan that helped him so much through those tough times, it was a no brainer for me to do this. I absolutely love racing, horses and York Races. I never thought I’d have the opportunity to gallop down the best track in the country, achieving something I’ve only ever dreamt of doing. I am beyond excited & truly grateful I have been given this opportunity, it really is a dream come true.

Having lived in North Yorkshire all my life, days out at York Races have always left me in awe of how wonderful it must be to ride down the Knavesmire. Hence why I can’t believe I am getting the opportunity to do so, and what better way than to do it for Macmillan. As a teenager we lost both parents of my dear friends, Thomas and Matthew Nichols to cancer and latterly my Grandad lost his battle with leukaemia. This has been my motivation to raise funds and awareness, the more families that Macmillan can help going through these tragic times, the better!

I have been employed by Phillip Makin for the last 2 and a half years, not long after I started my employment my mother who had quite frequently complained of pain but was never diagnosed with an illness, suddenly was taken into hospital and sadly she passed away in a very short time with cancer. I am therefore riding in this Macmillan Charity Race as it is a charity very close to my heart, they do a fantastic job in cancer research and the more money they raise the more wonderful things they can do for people like my dear mother with cancer.

Every year my family and I come and support Macmillan Raceday. I would say I’m going to apply next year! My friend who had gone through cancer treatment printed the forms off and said get them filled in. My Dad’s cousin and friend’s Mum both sadly lost their fight before they could see us charge down the Knavesmire. I would like to thank my family and friends who have helped raise money and get me fit. Also thanks to my best friend of 27 years Gillian Boanas for trusting me on her horse today. This may be the end of a good friendship if I don’t give it a good ride. 26

I have worked in racing yards since I was 16 and I’m currently at David O’Meara’s yard. I wanted to raise money for Macmillan after seeing what an amazing job they do for people with cancer and also the help it provides to their loved ones. This journey has been one of the most amazing things I have done. I’ve met some brilliant people and all of the other 11 riders are fantastic. We have all raised so much money for Macmillan I have really enjoyed training it’s been hard but it has been well worth it and I will be looking forward to the race.

He supported my love of horses; picked me up when I fell down and encouraged me to ‘focus, one fence at a time’. It’s an honour to be in the race. I hope to help other families receive essential Macmillan care thanks to Sam England Racing, my 116 supporters and sponsors Shepherd, Whiteburn, T.J.Atkins, Procotor, Leathers, H.M.B., Tim Leigh, Serviceloos, Pharmalls, SeedsDesign. Form: 46700 Breeder: T J Cooper
In 2011, I met Kim Tinkler on a riding holiday. Two years later, Nigel Tinkler suggested I ride in the Macmillan Charity Race at York. Shortly after, Nigel watched me ride a thoroughbred and suggested I perhaps use my time differently. The challenge began then. I’ve lost loved ones to cancer and have loved ones currently fighting back, and I ride for them and for all families impacted by cancer. The opportunity to ride in support of Macmillan has been a privilege. I am thankful to Kim and Nigel for their extraordinary patience and generosity and to family and friends for their overwhelming support.

Jockey: Wendy Midgley Form: 0U3-70 Breeder: Garrett O’Neill
I have been around and worked with horses all my life and competed horses in many disciplines, I now work alongside my husband, Paul as his assistant trainer. Taking on this race was a big responsibility with the fundraising and the fitness we had to achieve, but it been a fantastic journey and great fun, and I’ve relished the challenge. I wanted to raise money for Macmillan as I’ve seen friends and family over the years effected by cancer so it’s a charity close to my heart, but the real fun bit is getting to ride at the iconic York Racecourse.
CHARITY RACE PRESENTATION & BEST TURNED OUT The trophy for this race will be presented to the winning owner after the race by Lee & Jason Cooper, Directors of Ernest Cooper Ltd. Ernest Cooper have generously given £50 to the racing groom responsible for the best turned out horse in this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION
Our first race is also the richest race today, a handicap for horses aged 3yo and up over the 6-furlong trip. Remember, such races are designed for close competition, so the handicapper is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. The best on past performance will be the highest rated horse and so will carry more weight than the lowest rated; Lampang has top weight today. Looking for help? Follow the red bi plane through the card for the racecourse tipster’s recommendations.

KNAVESMIRE TIP A competitive contest, but marginal preference is for the progressive MR WAGYU, who finished third in the Ayr Gold Cup last weekend. The six-year-old can race off a 1lb lower mark today, which makes him 2lb well in, and he has to be respected now eased slightly in grade. The unexposed Cairn Island is an obvious danger having returned to winning ways over 6f at Newmarket a month ago, while Treacherous and Chairmanoftheboard complete the shortlist.

With thanks to Jim Donnelley Who retires from PA after a 50-year career in sport and racing Jim Donnelley is retiring after a huge 50 year career working for the Press Association – the national news agency of the UK and Ireland. Over that period, Jim has been a great friend of horse racing, and was instrumental in ensuring the distribution of racecards, starting prices and results to racing fans across the UK and Ireland day in and day out. As well as driving PA’s racing operation for decades both in Yorkshire and before that in Fleet Street, Jim was also the Company Secretary of the Starting Price Regulatory Commission for nearly 30 years. Jim began his career in 1965 at The Exchange Telegraph Company (Extel), part of the London Stock Exchange. Having joined as a messenger, Jim rose through the ranks at Extel. When Extel merged into the Press Association, Jim moved to Leeds to open the new PA office. He has been there ever since, possibly the only South London accent heard regularly within a mile of Elland Road. A hugely popular figure among his colleagues, he can entertain for hours with his stories and commanded immense respect – his knowledge of the racing world and its movers and shakers more or less unrivalled. “Where’s Jim?” would be a question often asked of PA’s representatives on a racecourse! Lord Bernard Donoughue (“Lord D” to Jim), formerly chairman of the SPRC, said: “Jim Donnelley was a joy to work with. Ever loyal, knowing every item of business and every player in the game, his humour and shrewd judgement guided me through two decades of constantly changing race betting. The deeply valued Starting Price would not have survived and evolved into its modern form without Jim.” Jim has now retired from his role of Director of Racing and Sports Betting at Press Association. All at Racecourse Media Group and York Racecourse would like to thank Jim for his huge contribution to the sport and we wish him the very best for his retirement, and some better luck with his punting!

See page 75 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION
We stay under handicap conditions, this time for slightly older contenders, 4yo + and slightly further over seven furlongs. Remember those nearest the ceiling are considered the best and will carry more weight, Jumaira Bay has the heaviest burden here. If you need some help look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, look how Boardman carries both.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Plenty have the form to be competitive in this contest, with the Roger Fell-trained La Trinidad perhaps the best long-term prospect. However, with the four-year-old having to prove his effectiveness over 7f, the focus switches to the progressive LION TOWER, who may still have more to offer for this yard. Firmament took advantage of a career-low mark when winning readily at Newcastle last time and looks a threat, while Poet’s Magic posted the best effort of her career so far when runner-up at Ayr on her latest start and is also considered.

Distance: Race Type: Prize Money: Age: Stalls:

Six Furlongs (1,200 metres) See page 00 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION Time to concentrate, easy bit first, race four is limited to 2year old horses, so in their first season racing. All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock. When they were bought, at a recognised auction, the market was deemed as an assessment of their quality and so potential, the most expensive being categorised as Band A, the next group as Band B and so on. If you must know, the Band A’s went for above £50,000 descending in roughly £20,OOO bands thereafter. Any horse in Band A racing in opposition to a Band B horse must start by carrying two pounds in extra weight (see Another Investment against International Boy); if a Band C is in the same race, then the Band B horse carries two pounds more than the Band C contestant, meaning the Band A horse will be carrying four pounds (2+2) more than their Band C rival (so throw Hello Jumbo into the mix , as an example). Stay with me, the principle from wider racing that winning would add weight for next time is applied by a previous winner having to carry a 6lb penalty, so victory at Hamilton Park means that extra weight for Pockett Rockett/ to keep the maths simple today, this field are all seeking their maiden win. The same principles apply for the fillies only they start with a lower weight so they can better compete against the boys, so Baileys Accolade has less weight than a colt in her Band. If this all sounds a bit complicated then a pin is a proven method in these races.is your choice of “P”s, pedigree or pin.

KNAVESMIRE TIP A competitive event that may go the way of ROACH POWER, with the Tim Easterby stable in good form. Still a maiden after two starts, he was pushed into the lead last time at Musselburgh before being headed close home, but that was over a furlong further and he may do better now. Object drops in class after being tried in Listed company last time and may be a bigger danger than Trust Bertie, who is hard to gauge after one run and one win in lesser company.

CARING FOR THE HORSES AT YORK RACECOURSE
Looking after the horses is a priority at York and every raceday there is a team of experienced equine vets on constant call. Much of their work is done before racing actually starts, being on hand to check horses over and reassure connections. As part of the Northern End Development the vets have their own office, a large treatment box and a dedicated “stock box” to help them assess and treat the stars of our show. If there is an incident during a race, prompt attention to horse and rider is provided by the modern ambulances, you will see them parked by the track, ready for a rapid response. Like most courses York will often use green screens during an incident, these offer privacy to those involved and their presence does not necessarily signify bad news. Keeping cool is important to a racehorse so you might see them using the horse showers in the new wash down area or the cold water provided in the parade ring and at every start. If you spot a mist cloud behind the saddling boxes that means the horses are benefiting from the cooling power of the special water-misting fans. If a horse loses a shoe or ‘spreads a plate’, then there is a farrier at every start, as well as in their dedicated box by the pre parade ring, to put it right and let the racing commence. Remember a farrier shoes horses, a blacksmith makes gates or the impressive fretwork on the front of the future Weighing Room. As you enjoy your meeting, you can rest assured the horses are being well cared for by the racecourse team and their own dedicated stable staff. 53

KNAVESMIRE TIP A BOY NAMED IVY looked a shade unlucky at Thirsk on his latest outing and that looks a strong piece of form, so a reproduction of that performance will make him a big player in this contest. Surprise Picture ran flat at Nottingham but if he can bounce back to form he will be a leading contender as well, while Invincibly is another for the shortlist after scoring from the front at Ayr.

KNAVESMIRE TIP MASTER MILLINER ran out a convincing winner over course and distance earlier this month and was given a 5lb rise for that success. The five-year-old gelding has progressed nicely this season and he gets the vote. Autumn War merits respect now eased in grade and he can make his presence felt, while recent Musselburgh scorer Bollin Neil is another to consider. He won’t mind any ease in conditions.

KNAVESMIRE TIP HELLO ME looks to have turned a corner recently and produced a career-best performance when fitted with first-time cheekpieces (worn again today) at Windsor earlier this month. A further 6lb rise in the ratings is no shock and she might be able to complete the double. There are a whole host of potential dangers, though, including Deny Knowledge and Iris Dancer, both consistent fillies who will be suited by the forecast good ground.

1m 4f Handicap 61-80 £15,000 4+ Centre
One Mile Three Furlongs About 188 Yards (2,300 metres) See page 75 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION
Guess what? Another testing handicap, open only to horses aged four-years-old and over and whose mark is between 71-90, racing over one and a half miles . This time the real difference is between the jockeys as it is a race for apprentices. They can claim a reduction in the weight allocated to their mount depending on their own past success. So, choose whether to back a runner like Cormier and so benefit from the experience of Harry Russell or take the weight allowed for an upcoming rider such as Stephen Mooney who partners Cozone. Caviar or code roe for Friday night tea, this race could decide it.

Topanticipation is also a maiden but she is another with a live chance after an encouraging run behind the progressive Emaraty Hero last time.
