’ HOLLOW SAMPSON’S Providing the storybook location for your special event

A

southern wedding…transcending time and dimension— charming, romantic and uniquely your own; the beginning of your happily ever after should be a magical moment to be remembered forever and captured in the windows of your soul. Sampson’s Hollow is an event facility that will provide the storybook location for any special event or gathering. Recently named as a 2015 Wedding Wire Couple’s Choice winner and The Knot’s Best of Weddings 2015, the naturally landscaped farmland has been in the family since the mid-1800s. It was recently recognized by the state of Tennessee as an historic Century-old farm. The venue is a family-operated enterprise, owned by Bill and Janice Livingston and their three sons. Sampson Flynn was the inspiration for the name as the patriarch of the Flynn family. It was Sampson’s daughter, Sarah Flynn Livingston, through whom the farm See SAMPSON’S HOLLOW on Page 5

was passed along to her son’s children— her grandchildren. The rural, yet graceful, environment reflects a history filled with lore and legends of the Appalachian heritage of the area. When visiting the 120 acre farm, it’s almost like visiting the pages of a country-inspired magazine or pinned from idea boards on a vintageinfused website. Located in Walland, Tennessee, next door to Blackberry Farm and fifteen minutes from the entrance to the national park, Sampson’s Hollow is easily accessible while still maintaining the privacy and seclusion which most guests desire. There are many choices of locations for a wedding ceremony at Sampson’s Hollow. Enjoy the vista and

being surrounded by the mountains, in the true hollow of the farm at the white meadow pergola, which sits in the midst of rolling hills bordered in assorted wild flowers, or for a smaller event, perhaps the foot bridge by the creek bed. A favorite location is within Sarah’s Glen, enclosed by a cathedral of trees, shrubbery and vibrant flowers and greenery. This intimate location features three wooden arbors and a stacked rock stairway. An old gas station and 1951 Dodge truck add another reflection of days-gone-by to the beauty of the glen. In the event of bad weather, the porch of our contemporary barn will seat approximately 200 guests on a covered front porch, accented by a lighted chandelier in the center of the elevated roof and a full view of the beauty of the property.

The interior of the barn will seat up to 100 guests, depending on use of space. Features include air-conditioning, a wood burning fireplace, upstairs loft for changing, three restrooms, a small kitchen and a handicap-accessible entrance. A sweetly adorned cabin provides a dressing suite for the bride and her attendants as well as a romantic beginning for the first night as husband and wife. One of the most photographed areas of the farm is at the Little Smokehouse, an original building which is approximately 80 years old and offers unique backgrounds on each side of the distressed wood as well as upstairs in the loft. There are antiques, collectibles and a myriad of colors, textures and scenery from which to capture amazing photo-

graphs and to provide beautiful backgrounds for your special day. Horses graze in the adjacent pastures and the scenery is reminiscent of a pastoral drawing. From rustic to elegant, the property lends itself as a blank canvas for the whimsical creativity of the do-ityourself bride or the bride who would like to have someone take care of every service for her for convenience. Each season offers a different type of beauty and Sampson’s Hollow is available during every month of the year for weddings, receptions, vow renewals, family gatherings and high school reunions. Please visit our website at www.sampsonshollow.com for more information and click on our links to Pinterest, Facebook and YouTube to see photos and a virtual tour of the property. D RESS SHOPPING TIPS F

or brides-to-be, finding the right gown is one element of wedding planning that calls for patience and persistence. Trial and error is often part of the process as women look for the perfect wedding gown. Brides-to-be who have a specific style in mind may find that their dream gown doesn't always live up to expectations, while another style of dress they never imagined wearing turns out to be a stunner. Another challenge many women face when gown shopping is that many wedding gowns are styled and geared toward women with slender figures, making the process of selecting a gown for a curvier bride a bit more difficult. But any bride, regardless of size or figure, can find the ideal dress, especially when she employs the following tips. • Sample sizes fit a select few. Bridal shops carry a range of dresses but may only stock one or two sample dresses. For economy, these samples are a median size that are intended to fit as many shoppers as possible. Such gowns are usually in the neighborhood of a size 10. Most women, whether petite or plus-size, will not fit into the sample, so do not get discouraged. • Call bridal stores in advance to schedule your visits. Your time is precious, so call bridal shops prior to visiting and explain to them your size and what you are looking for in a gown. This will ensure you aren't wasting your time driving to stores that can't provide what you want. • Select the right fabrics. Heavier fabrics like taffeta, silk dupioni and satin may conceal better than others and can be ruched to camouflage areas you want to minimize. • Use salespeople as a resource. The right salesperson can make wedding shopping much easier and far more pleasant. Don't rest until you find someone who is excited to work with you and will give you his or her honest opinion and recommendations. • Dresses can be altered. Every bride needs some alterations made to her dress to achieve the perfect fit. A dress is unlikely to meet all of your needs right off the rack, so find a good seamstress who can alter your dress to meet your needs. Sleeves can be put on, dresses can be shortened, support can be added, and many customizations can be done to a gown post-production. • Find a flattering shape. Choose a gown with a full-skirt or an A-line skirt with an empire or a dropped-waist seam that will elongate your midriff and flow away from your hips. Curvier brides typically avoid strapless gowns, as such dresses have a tendency to make a woman's shoulders and arms look wider. • Don't get stuck on size. Sizes vary widely depending on the manufacturer. Wedding gowns tend to be labeled with couture sizes, which are much smaller than street sizes. A good salesperson should have a reasonable conversion chart or will choose sizes based on your measurements alone. Ignore the size on the tag and go for the gown that fits.

• In my personal experience Sampson's Hollow is an amazing venue to work with! My flowers made by Janice were so pretty and better than I ever could have imagined. And Lesley is AWESOME! The best wedding coordinator I could have asked for!! Several guests were impressed by her hard work all day. Their property is stunning and so beautiful! I'm sad to say that my big day is over because being at Sampson's Hollow was like a fairy tale! ~ Lindsay • I can't begin to put into words what an amazing job Sampson's Hollow employees did! They went above and beyond our expectations! Every last detail was exactly what I asked for and more! Every inch if this place is beautiful! I definitely recommend using this venue!! ~Autumn

• ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS WEDDING! The wedding facilities are located in the mountains which creates a beautiful backdrop for the wedding. Our wedding planner, Carole, took care of all the details. The place including the reception hall was beautifully decorated the way asked. The food which they prepared there was delicious. Our pictures taken on the grounds using their facilities are beautiful. We showed Carole a picture of the cake we wanted. The cake looked just like the picture. Our guests raved about the food, decorations, and wedding ceremony. The groom and I told them we wanted wildflowers for the bouquets and the bouquets they made were beautiful....perfect for the wedding. I had the stress free, fairy tale wedding day because of their hard work. I would recommend Sampson's Hollow to anyone planning a wedding. ~ Laura

They make you feel like they truly care about every aspect of your special day and spare nothing to make it that special. And the venue itself is absolutely gorgeous. That's all I heard from the guests is how beautiful the place was. I highly recommend them for your special day. ~Heather

WEDDING PHOTOS T IPS Long after the final toast has been made or the last couple has left the dance floor, wedding photos will help couples relive the wonderful memories of their ceremonies and receptions. Wedding photographers realize the important role photography plays in a wedding. Photos are how couples document their nuptials, and the right photographer can make all the difference. • Seek referrals. There are scores of wedding photographers, and some are better than others. Word of mouth from other couples can help. Referrals can offer insight into a photographer's personality and his or her abilities to work with the wedding party and guests throughout the day. • Communication is key. An important component of wedding photography actually starts well before the wedding day. The way a photographer communicates with you about your wishes and desired shots is very important, as this is when to discuss specific shots you want 8 • WITH THIS RING | JANUARY 2015

TO FIND THE RIGHT PHOTOGRAPHER

taken during the ceremony, such as whether the bride wants to be seen and pose with the groom prior to tying the knot. In addition, this is a great time for the photographer to get familiar with each venue's rules regarding vendors. • Choose a photographer who is confident and firm. A good photographer will be able to direct photo subjects and get everyone to participate and in line. Brides and grooms likely won't want to handle such tasks on their own, so a confident and firm yet cordial photographer can be an invaluable asset. • Prepare a shoot list. Meet with the photographer before the wedding and provide a list of all the shots you absolutely need to get. This way the photographer can plan for these as well as capture the candid moments throughout the day. • Discuss a backup plan with the photographer. Mishaps happen, even on the most carefully planned wedding day. Discuss what the photographer does to

safeguard your digital photo files. Are they backed-up to a cloud or a secured offsite server? Does the photographer bring along a second camera in case the primary one has a malfunction? What happens if he or she is ill on the day of the wedding? How is a replacement chosen? Understanding how the photographer adapts to unforseen situations can make you feel more confident in choosing one photographer instead of another. The camera gear should also have adequate memory to store all of the photos, and a few backup batteries can't hurt, either. • Know what each package includes. The photographer should clearly spell out which items and services are included as part of the contract. There should be no surprises when it's time to pay the balance of the photographer's fees, so go over each itemized detail to be sure the package in your contract is the one you really want.

PHOTO BOOTH RENTALS The hottest new trend in weddings. If you have ever attended a wedding with a photo booth rental, you already know how much fun they really are. Photo booths and weddings are a perfect match. They are exploding in popularity throughout the country. The resulting pictures are always fun and sometimes, outright hilarious. When that curtain gets pulled shut, almost anything can happen and it usually does! The fact that there is no photographer in the photo booth will not inhibit your guests’ creativity and make for some of the best photos of the evening. Most photo booth rentals come with an on-site attendant to help, on-site prints, unlimited sessions and free props. Many companies provide a free DVD or Flash Drive of your event pictures, a web download so your guests may share in the event from home and some companies can now post your photos directly on Facebook!

BUILD

A WEDDING

REGISTRY Many once-popular wedding traditions have fallen by the wayside. But one wedding tradition that has withstood the test of time is the wedding registry. Couples about to tie the knot still build a wedding registry so their guests know what to buy them as wedding gifts. This saves guests the trouble of agonizing over what to buy the couple getting hitched and also ensures that couples won’t receive two or more of the same item. Building a registry can be fun, as couples can act like kids in a candy store and add items they might otherwise not be able to afford. But there is a method to building a registry that can ensure the process of giving and receiving gifts is comfortable and convenient for everyone involved. • Choose a national chain. Many stores will allow couples to establish a registry, but it behooves couples to choose a national chain or chains for their registry. A local boutique store might sell several items you would love to have, but that store may only be accessible to guests who live nearby, and such stores may be more expensive than larger national chains that can afford to charge less for similar products. Choosing a national chain ensures all of your guests will be able to access and purchase a gift from your registry, and make those purchases without breaking the bank. • Choose a store with an online presence. When choosing a store for your registry, it also helps to choose a store with an online presence that’s userfriendly. Ideally, pick an online retailer you have already had positive experiences with. This not only will make it easier for your guests, but also for you should you decide to return items down the road. • Choose more than one store. You also want to choose more than one store when building a registry. Some guests will prefer to shop in-store rather than online, so you want to give them some options so they don’t have to drive far and wide to find the lone brick and mortar store for your registry. • Visit the stores and do your homework. Though some stores allow you to develop a registry entirely online, it still helps for couples to visit the store together and build their registries in the more tradi12 • WITH THIS RING | JANUARY 2015

tional way. Visiting a store as opposed to browsing the store website allows you to touch and feel products, which can give you a more accurate idea of their quality. In addition to seeing the products in person, read online reviews of products before putting them on your registry so you can ensure you’re getting quality items. • Choose items that vary in price. Many couples are sheepish about putting expensive items on their registries. That’s not surprising, as the cost of attending a wedding, especially one that features lots of outof-town guests, can be substantial. But some guests, such as the bride and groom’s parents and siblings, may want to give a more high-end gift, so don’t be afraid to include items in a range of prices, from the inexpensive to the more costly, on your registry.

• Don’t abandon the registry after your big day. You won’t end up getting everything you include on your registry, but that doesn’t mean you should just forget about those items that never made their way into your home. Many retailers offer couples significant discounts on items from their registries that were never purchased, and those discounts may extend for as long as a year after the big day. Revisit your registry after the wedding to see if you can find great deals on those items you never received, and continue to do so until the registry expires.

Building a registry can be a fun activity for couples about to tie the knot. But there are some guidelines to follow to make the process go smoothly for guests and couples alike.

WEDDING Once a couple has officially tied the knot, the newly recognized man and wife and all of their guests will retire to a party room where they can mingle, dance and enjoy a good meal. In the past, standard fare like prime rib and roasted chicken dominated wedding menus. But today’s weddings cater to people of various culinary tastes, and couples and their guests can expect more upscale and creative cuisine to be rolled out for wedding receptions. The following are a handful of the more popular trends with regard to wedding cuisine. • Miniature bites Many people say good things come in small packages, and when it comes to miniature versions of favorite foods, they may be right. Instead of large meals that fill guests up fast, they can munch on smaller bites of their favorite dishes. How about a piece of meatloaf topped with whipped mashed potatoes? A cherry tomato with a small piece of mozzarella cheese makes a mini caprese salad. Turning favorite foods into bite-sized adventures can add a touch of whimsy to the reception. • Breakfast for dinner Some couples are circumventing high price tags for their weddings by choosing to hold the festivities at less expensive times of day. Brunch-themed weddings are a big hit with those who would much rather dine on a stack of pancakes than a dish of pasta. Omelet stations, croissants and a bevy of other breakfast table fare can be enjoyed any time of the day. 14 • WITH THIS RING | JANUARY 2015

CUISINE TRENDS

• Dim sum

Dim sum allows guests to sample different foods without filling up. Carts of dumplings and other small plates of appetizers can be wheeled around so everyone can choose what they want and what they want to avoid. • Gourmet comfort food People love familiar comfort foods, but now gourmet comfort foods are shaking up wedding receptions. Macand-cheese with gouda and brie or chicken pot pie with a puff-pastry crust are a few offerings that can add glamour to down-home cooking. • Food with a show Instead of passed foods or buffet stations, couples are opting to make food an experience for guests. An oyster bar with a chef serving fresh seafood or a dessert master whipping up flambé is a feast for the eyes and mouth. • Interesting buffet stations Keep guests on their toes with various meal stations. A bountiful display of artisanal cheeses, fruits and breads will be a cheese lover’s dream. These stations also can be appetizing focal points around the room and ensure all guests get a bite of what they like best. • Family style Rustic and informal weddings have grown in popularity. Rather than food being brought to the guests or participants lining up in buffet lines, family-style dining allows guests to share conversation and pass the peas at the same time. Larger, rectangular tables allow more

guests to sit with one another and serve themselves food from community plates located in the center of the tables. • Food and beverage pairings Food-forward wedding couples are offering guests mouthwatering appetizers matched with a cocktail. A slider and a craft beer or a dumpling and a shot of saki are examples of this trend. • Nontraditional ‘fake’ cakes Instead of a multi-tiered cake or the cupcake fad that is starting to fizzle, couples are now opting for something new. Desserts that mimic the look of cake, but aren’t quite that combination of sponge and frosting are trending. Crepes, pies, cookies, and doughnuts are acceptable and can add a creative spark to the cakecutting ceremony. When offered along with dessert stations, guests can certainly get their fill of sweet delights. • Vegan and gluten-free options Chances are one or more people attending the reception will be on a restricted diet. Rather than relegate these guests to dining on side dishes and patchwork meals, certain couples are building entire offerings around vegan and gluten-free foods. Couples are getting creative with their food and beverage offerings at their weddings. Guests never know which culinary wonders they will encounter as they gather to wish the newlyweds well.

WEDDING

DAY

FLOWERS What would a wedding day be without flowers? The beauty and the aroma of fresh-cut flowers can create a welcoming atmosphere and complement the beauty and the style of a wedding wardrobe. Flowers are often the first things that guests see upon arriving for the ceremony, and they may even be something guests take home at the end of the night. Flowers create an air of romance, and most couples want to make flowers -- whether fresh or silk -- an integral part of their wedding day. As with any decision when planning a wedding, choosing the right flowers requires some research and a basic knowledge of which flowers will convey the message and the theme of your wedding. The number of colors, textures and combinations that can be created are so numerous that couples may feel the decision on the floral arrangements is best left to the florist. But it doesn't take a lot of expertise to know what you want, and it is important for couples to convey their feelings to the florist. Consider these tips when choosing a florist and selecting flowers. • Experts advise that a couple start looking for a florist at least six months before the wedding, especially if the wedding will take place during the peak season of May through September. Get recommendations from friends as to which florist they used or find out if your wedding planner or banquet hall manager recommends a particular florist. Some catering halls have agreements with florists, and they work together. • Browse magazines to get ideas of what you like. You also may be able to find a florist through an advertisement or if he or she has been featured in publications. Keep a scrapbook of the colors, types of flowers and arrangements and any other ideas that attract you so you will be able to present this information to the florist. • Establish your flower budget prior to sitting down with the florist. You should expect to pay at least 8 percent of the total wedding cost on flowers. Get an estimate on the floral arrangement and then tweak your needs according to your budget. Many florists can modify arrangements and find a middle ground with regard to cost. Selecting flowers that are in-season will result in more affordable rates than if you desire exotic or out-of-season blooms. • Once you've hired the florist, you can come up with a wedding flower worksheet that establishes all of your needs. The florist may ask for specific information, such as photos of the bride's gown as well as the colors and styles that the wedding party will be wearing. A good florist knows that a bouquet should not overpower or detract from the beauty of the bride. The florist may want to mimic textures from the dress, such as beading, with smaller flowers or berries within the arrangement. The groom's boutonniere is traditionally one of the flowers from the bride's bouquet so that the look is cohesive. • Ceremony flowers may be traditional, and some houses of worship have strict guidelines as to what can and cannot be used. However, reception flowers can be where you show off your creativity and whimsy. After all, this is a party and it should be fun. You may want to give the florist more freedom of expression with See FLOWERS on Page 18 16 • WITH THIS RING | JANUARY 2015

regard to reception centerpieces and flowers that adorn other areas of the room. • Because receptions tend to take place in the evening hours and are often indoor affairs, experts say that added lighting may be needed to put emphasis on the floral centerpieces and help present them in their best light. You may want to think about hiring a lighting designer to spotlight some areas of the room or at the very least incorporate candlelight into your centerpiece arrangements. • To give the impression that there are more flowers than there really are, use fragrance and filler as your tools. Fragrant flowers can fill up the room with a welcoming aroma. Look for frangipani, lilies, hyacinths, jasmine, and sweet peas for a big impact. Florists know how to stretch arrangements by using greenery and other filler to lend bulk without too much extra cost. • Experienced florists will know how long it takes certain buds to open and

show off their maximum beauty. Therefore, expect a florist to be working on your floral arrangements as much as a week before the wedding date -- purchasing containers, cleaning flowers and waiting for certain ones to open fully. Minimize changes close to your wedding date as most things will already be started. • It is possible to make your own centerpieces or bouquets if you so desire. Simplicity will work best for the novice. Think about grouping similar-hued calla lilies together for a bridal bouquet. Hydrangea and peonies are larger flowers that can easily fill up a vessel on a table as a centerpiece. White flowers will coordinate with any color scheme and could be the easiest to mix and match. White blooms include sweet pea, rose, camellia, stephanotis, narcissus, gardenia, orchid, lily of the valley, jasmine, and gypsophila. Flowers are one component of the wedding that will help achieve the magic and beautiful atmosphere couples desire.
