Renovate! Decisions must be made before beginning a kitchen remodel

ROBBY O’DANIEL rodaniel@farragutpress.com

Jeanette Pelfrey, sales associate at Friedman’s Appliances at 9296 Kingston Pike, said kitchen renovations begin with deciding what type of renovation it will be. “How involved do they want their remodel to be?” she said. “Is it going to be a total remodel where they’re gutting everything, or is it going to be just update the look of the appliances? So after they make that decision, then we can talk to them about different ways of achieving what they want and staying within a budget that they hopefully have in mind.” People must decide on appliances before cabinets if new cabinets are part of the renovation, she said. “Do they need to make room for a beverage center or maybe an ice machine or a trash compactor or maybe a wine station or coffee station?” she said. “So the customer has to decide all of these things before they can really move into your cabinet phase.” Then they decide on cabinets, countertops and flooring, she

said. But for installation, flooring usually goes first, followed by cabinets, countertops and then appliances, she said. Even though appliances are picked first, they usually are installed last, she said. “You cannot install a dishwasher before the countertop comes in because the sink is attached to the countertop,” she said. “So the countertop with the sink has to be installed and the plumbing has to be on in order for the dishwasher to then come in. But most customers seem to be doing granite in their kitchens or quartz material, and those countertops are just so heavy. They’re not easy to manage, so we just recommend not putting your appliances that could be damaged or scratched in place until the very last.” When talking with customers going through kitchen renovations, Pattersons Home Appliance Center salesperson John Rodriguez likes to begin with the cooking area. Pattersons is located at 10632 Kingston Pike. To Rodriguez, the two most

important kitchen appliances are the refrigerator and the cooktop. When looking for a new cooktop, there are questions that arise, he said. Does the customer want gas or electric, 36-inch or 30-inch and which special features? When looking for an oven, do they want a traditional thermal oven or convection one? “On a side note, one of the most overlooked appliances in the kitchens today is good ventilation, having a hood or a downdraft that actually gets the smoke, the grease, the odor and all cooking contaminants out of

the home,” he said. Customers examine decibel levels with dishwashers, he said. Quieter dishwashers have lower decibel levels. “People always look at the decibel level and say, ‘Well I want the quietest dishwasher I can get,’” he said. “... The dishwasher at 50 decibels will be quiet enough that you won’t have to turn your TV up louder or raise your voice. ... People look for dishwashers that you don’t even know if they’re running. That’s when you’re going to be in the low 40s basically.” But he said people most likely

could not tell the difference between dishwashers that are close in decibel ranges, such as a 43-decibel dishwasher versus a 46-decibel one. Rodriguez advises to have a dishwasher with a sanitize cycle. He outlined some do’s and don’ts with kitchen remodeling. “I would say don’t put the refrigerator in a corner against the wall to where the doors won’t open properly or you’re really pinched for space,” he said. He advised planning with the See KITCHEN on Page 2B

Area retailers, contractors recommend doing homework before bathroom remodel

John and Sandy Peters of Farragut said their master bathroom remodel was one of the most expensive remodels a homeowner can undertake. John Peters said the undertaking was a total change from a bathroom built in 1977 to an updated one that was enlarged to incorporate a laundry room. “We replaced everything in the bath,” he said. “We changed the fiberglass tub and shower to a larger glassed-in tile shower. That was the feature we liked the most. It’s roomier and more functional.” The Peters also replaced their

vanity with an antique one with a bowl basin and wall-mounted faucet. “All this was very different from the old bathroom,” Peters said. “We are very happy with the shower. It has a view of the surrounding countryside.” In retrospect, he advised homeowners to be prepared to spend a lot of money and be patient. “It is a long and messy process,” he said. While the results are worth it, Peters said homeowners should not take the remodel lightly. Area retailers and contractors recommended doing one’s homework before such a remodel. Reduce hard water and its effects on your home. According to the Water Quality Association, the most common water quality problem reported by consumers is hard water. Most of our water supply comes from groundwater, it travels through rock and soil, picking up hardness minerals such as Calcium and Magnesium. The result of all this hardness is increased costs to us. These increased costs show up in many different ways. • Appliances like Dishwashers and Hot Water Heaters work less efficiently or fail. • Fixtures like faucets and shower heads get a hard water buildup leading to clogs and failures. • Shower doors become spotted, sinks and tubs get coated with a visible scale. For many of us, the cost of removing the hardness is actually less than leaving the water alone. Are you ready to get rid of the white spots on your granite and shower doors? Would you like cleaner, brighter, softer laundry? What Can I Do? Installing a Water Softener is the most effective solution to stop the effects of hard water. inet designer sales department (780 Louisville Road, Alcoa), recommended looking through magazines, websites and at do-it-yourself shows but warned homeowners should have an expert tell them if what they want done is possible. Likewise, David Hayes, owner of David’s Abbey Carpet & Floors, 10853 Kingston Pike, recommended seeking a professional. Hayes said homeowners should get a plan on a piece of paper of what they want done then get with the professional, who can guide the homeowner from there. remodel and doing research on the products involved in the renovation. “One thing I often tell customers is this: if you’re not selling your home in the next five years, you do not have to put stainless steel in there,” he said. “... If you’re selling the house in the

next five years, you really should consider putting stainless steel in [the kitchen].” Janice Allen, showroom consultant at Modern Supply at 525 Lovell Road, said most customers at Modern Supply who are doing kitchen renovations do full kitchen remodels. Other customers conduct partial kitchen remodels.

sentative with David’s Abbey Carpet & Floors, said a professional could help avoid “mess-ups,” particularly around a shower, where leaks can form if the work is not done correctly. Debbie Hicks, co-owner of Hicks Painting & Home Maintenance, Inc. with husband Gary, licensed

general contractors, 1792 Tinnel Road, Lenoir City, recommended homeowners have a plan – a sketch or drawing. Hicks recommended having the subfloor checked before the remodel to make sure of its condition. Hicks said they have seen floors rotted underneath from prior water damage. wants done. John Carver, owner of Precision Painting, 809 Breezeway Drive, Farragut, recommended homeowners should remove all mold and mildew before painting. He said lighter colors make small spaces seem larger and recommended using eggshell or higher sheens for ease of cleaning, moisture resistance and light reflectivity.
