SAIL AWAY Sailing a relaxing summer pastime
■
HEATHER BECK hbeck@farragutpress.com
Even without much wind, sailing in East Tennessee is fun and relaxing. It’s certainly one of the better things you can do with a Thursday afternoon in early April, which is what I had the opportunity to do when I took a short sailing lesson with Concord Yacht Club Commodore Randy Schonagen. We went out for a sail on Fort Loudoun Lake in his 27-foot Soling — a former training boat for the U.S. Olympic team — Thursday, April 12, and I received hands-on experience in learning the difference between the main sail and jib, how to tack and just what tell-tales are used for. “In my opinion, sailing on East Tennessee lakes is quite peaceful,” Schonagen said. That certainly was true of my experience on the Soling. In light breezes, Schonagen and I had time to admire the scenery between his lessons on recognizing wind direction, changing course and even docking. It made me wish I didn’t have to leave and head back to work. Schonagen said his favorite time of year to sail in East Tennessee is actually winter, when the winds are more likely to be sustained for longer periods of time. Although I’m personally glad I picked a warm day. The Soling was developed as a race boat and can be sailed by one person or can accommodate “six of your friends,” Schonagen said. “I personally like the Soling. She’s very elegant sitting in the water and she has history: it was designed in the late 50s as a racing boat in Norway and they used them in the Olympics for many years. “It’s a very safe boat, a very stable boat and it’s an easy boat to sail. It’s also a great boat if you want to go out in a breeze and work out, you can force the workout. If you want to go out with your favorite beverage and relax, she’s a very stable boat and a well-behaving boat,” he added. As someone who’s never sailed before — and someone who’s overwhelmingly clumsy — I’ll say I agree. Even when we caught a good breeze and surged through the waters of Fort Loudoun Lake, the Soling remained stable. The rudder and main sail lines were easy to learn and operate. “Now, if the wind is blowing hard and
you want to go out there and chase somebody else, the whole skill level changes at that point,” Schonagen said with a laugh. I certainly have a ways to go before I reach any type of racing skill level, but sailing is a fun and relaxing hobby, and I certainly understand its draw. Especially on sunny Thursday afternoons. Concord Yacht Club hosts dinghies and keelboats: dinghies being one-to-fourman boats that usually weigh less than 700 pounds and don’t require a motor, and keelboats weighing more and being longer — normally 18 to 45 feet long. Concord Yacht Club, 11600 S. Northshore Drive, was established in 1951 and offers a number of sailing and yachting activities, including sailing

instruction classes for children, youth and adults. “What we’re here to do is promote sailing through recreational sailing, yachting and training members in seamanship,” Schonagen said. Concord Sailing Center is the nonprofit outreach and education division of Concord Yacht Club, and was established in 1997. In June, Concord Sailing Center will host its 19th annual SailCamp, open to youth between the ages of 8 and 15, providing campers with a week-long course of water safety training and on-the-water sailing instruction. All camp sessions are instructed by U.S. Sailing certified instructors. CSC also works with area high schools — including Farragut, Bearden, Catholic
and Webb — to promote high school sailing programs. In addition, The University of Tennessee sailing team partners with CYC as its venue to practice, train and hold regattas, and UT’s First Year Studies program offers a “Learn to Sail” class at the Club. Adult Learn to Sail classes are held in spring and fall. Weekends and Wednesday nights are the times for racing and cruising activities at the Club. The Yacht Club is a Tennessee Clean Marina. F
inding creative activities to keep your kids entertained during the summer can be a struggle. How many times can you make a visit to the pool new and exciting? If you’re looking for something different to do with your kids, consider throwing them a party! Whether you’re celebrating a birthday or simply the great weather, a party provides a terrific opportunity for kids to socialize while school is out of session. Summery Theme Set the mood for your guests with a great motif like a princess party or a pirate party. “Opt for a theme that speaks to your child’s interests and personality,” says Mariam Naficy, CEO of Minted.com, an online stationery store that specializes in custom-designed invitations. Browsing through kids’ party invitations online is a great way to inspire your young ones to help plan the day. Visit www.minted.com for party theme
ideas you both can enjoy. Stay Active Summer is the best time of year to get the kids moving. Ditch the video games and celebrate the season with relay races and sports in the yard. After an exhilarating three-legged race match, your guests may need to cool off. Tell everyone to bring bathing suits and let them run through the sprinkler. Cool Eats Most children won’t turn down a piping hot slice of pizza, no matter what the thermometer reads. But you may want to pick some cooler culinary fare for dessert. Opt for ice cream, popsicles and all those other frozen treats that make summer great. It’s messy – but worth the fuss! Don’t forget the grill. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be easy to pull off for a large group, and are always a hit with kids. Let guests “build-their-own-burgers” with a toppings assembly line.

The “Write” Gift Great gifts for kids that can be used year-round are personalized journals and stationery. Thanking their friends for coming to their party -- in writing -- will be good motivation for them to pick up a pen during their long
vacation from school. A party is a great way to keep kids social and active during the summer months. So put on your party hats and celebrate the summertime! ~StatePoint

Get in the Pool Parents gearing up for National Learn to Swim Day
N
ational Learn to Swim Day is Saturday, May 19, and parents across the country are gearing up to get their children out of the house and into the pool. It’s important to teach your kids to swim early on, as progressive learning will help them develop skills that will last a lifetime. According to the Red Cross, drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children ages 1 to 14 years old. A child should never be left unattended in or around the water – even in your home pool, where statistics show toddlers are most susceptible. Learning to swim is not only a necessary safety measure; it’s also a fun physical activity that families can enjoy together. SwimWays, the creator of the Swim Steps program that helps kids learn to swim, is sharing four simple steps to help you introduce your children to the water, and set the stage for a lifetime of
swimming: • Get your child comfortable in the water at an early age. You can introduce babies to the water using a baby float. The SwimWays Baby Spring Float for example, has a mesh play space for toys and splashing. Teach them that the water is a fun place to play. • Explore the water with your child using swim-training aids specially designed to help parents teach kids to swim. The Swim Steps line includes the Swim Sweater and Swim Vests that will comfortably help your little one balance and paddle -- two important pre-swimming skills. • Once your child is ready to learn to swim, use a graduated flotation device, such as the Power Swimr, to allow him or her to develop swimming abilities at his or her own pace. Be sure to keep an active eye and supervise at all times! • While you may feel your little one has the skills to swim without help by now, remember it takes a lot of courage
ACT SAT PSAT Individual tutoring and group classes at reasonable prices.
to traverse the water alone. It’s often beneficial for a child to ease into swimming with a bit of extra support before taking their first solo strokes. Kids can use kickboards as they begin to master their swimming skills and gain the confidence needed to swim successfully.
You can find information and ways your family can participate in National Learn to Swim Day at www.TeachMeToSwim.com. Before you know it, your child will be a fish in the water! ~StatePoint

Summer Learning Avoid the loss of educational ground over summer vacation
T
his summer, millions of kids will experience the dreaded “summer slide,” described as the educational ground lost when young minds sit idle over summer. “Many teachers spend the first four to six weeks at the start of each school year re-teaching material students have forgotten over summer,” says Ron Fairchild, executive director of the Center for Summer Learning at The Johns Hopkins University. To help your children avoid this intellectual slump and give them an academic leg-up come fall, keep them thinking over the summer by making learning fun. Here are a few ideas to get you started: Educational Outings Be sure your summer is filled with outings that will jog your kids’ noggins. Museums, historical sights and science centers are great combinations of learning and fun. Turn a hike through the woods into an opportunity to learn
about trees and wildlife. If you’re going on vacation, encourage your kids to research the history and culture of your destination in advance. Remember, even a trip to the ballpark can be educational. For a painless math lesson, talk stats about your favorite baseball team. Smart Games All those outings are going to mean a lot of time in the car. Rather than repeatedly answer the classic road trip mantra – “are we there yet?”— take advantage of the time together and use it to play games that challenge smarts. Brain Quest (www.BrainQuest.com) for example, an educational tool popular amongst teachers, parents and children, helps bridge the gap in learning from the end of one school year to the start of the next. Consider using their card decks and workbooks, full of curriculum-based content, as they are See LEARNING on Page 12

easy to pack into a hand bag or beach bag. You can easily turn those long boring road trips into fun and educational bonding experiences! Pen and Paper There’s no better time than summer to curl up outside or on an extended road trip with a great book. You can instill a love of reading in your children by arming them with both a library card and a summer reading list. Be sure to visit your library frequently to refresh their reading material and help them get inspired. Most libraries host readings and book clubs, and even offer free classes. Take advantage of such programs. If it’s been awhile since your children used pen and paper, have them keep summer journals about their experiences. For those inclined toward fiction, encourage them to use the time off to write short stories or a novel. A long vacation is no excuse to give a
brain time off. This summer, turn down time at the pool and on the road into a learning experience. ~StatePoint
