Cindy Doyle Cindy Doyle Agent State Farm®
Cindy Doyle was initially hired to meet a "female agent quota" in 1988 in Florida, so that the large pool of qualified male candidates could be appointed. She was determined to be successful, in light of breaking the barrier of an all-male environment in the Panhandle. She won others' respect, built a successful business and rose to an executive level within State Farm, moving her family six times in 10 years. “I wanted to go back to working with customers directly and moved to Knoxville 12 years ago, love it, and will be here until the end,” she jokes. Today, State Farm has many women on their board of directors and in leadership and agent positions. The business has seen changes with regulations, technology and diverse customer needs. "Once solely a face-to-face relationship, we've evolved into 24/7 sales and service by calling, clicking and walking in. We adapt to the changing needs of our customers because we care," says Doyle.

Jill Jordan The Consignment Shoppe
The Consignment Shoppe at Campbell Station, owned by Jill Jordan, provides an enjoyable consignment and shopping experience for everyone. Jordan constantly has new displays and products at great prices to give customers a special shopping destination. “It's quite different from the corporate retail mindset which can absolutely take the joy out of shopping for everyone involved. If I'm going to work as hard as I do, you better believe I'm going to have all the fun I can!” said Jordan. Jordan thrives on the challenge of finding, choosing and displaying items that make people excited to own them. “Like most small retailers, I couldn’t stand to own the same things as everyone else or follow the same rules as everyone else,” continued Jordan. Now located at 11316 Station West Drive for over a year, Jordan is proud of having the courage to move the store to its new location. “Moving is scary and expensive, but it's going even better than I hoped!” she said.

WOMEN MOVING ON UP Leadership positions, business ownership no longer just a man's world The glass ceiling may be showing some cracks but it’s not yet broken when it comes to leadership and ownership positions for women. According to a Pew Research Center report in 2015 it’s getting better but we’re not there yet. The report says Americans believe women are just as capable as men in leadership positons. They have the same level of intelligence and capacity for innovation. When it comes to compassion and organizational skills they may even be viewed more favorable than men. So why won’t that glass ceiling shatter? According to the Pew study, 4-in-10 Americans cite a double standard: Women just have to be better. Women in our area are showing they’re up for the challenge. Michelle Henry is executive director of the Knoxville chapter of the Executive Women’s Association. She says when it was first organized here in 1979 there were very few professional women in this area. Membership reached 15 to 20 members. The chapter typically accepts only 10 new members a year and early on it was hard to reach that goal. “Today the makeup of Knoxville’s workforce has grown to include many more women in top-ranking positions, but our organization’s primary purpose remains the same – to provide networking opportunities for professional women,” she says. Today selecting only 10 is “always challenging because we have so many strong nominations,” Henry explains. When the Knoxville Journal folded in 1991 reporter Cynthia Moxley struck out on her own to form one of a few women-owned public relations firms. Her husband joined her later to form Moxley Carmichael. Over time she’s seen the landscape change. Breaking the glass ceiling will take time and competence Moxley says. “A male businessman may be more comfortable dealing with someone who looks like him,” she explains. “As time goes on, companies 6 • WOMEN IN BUSINESS • MAY 19, 2016
find the best and brightest may not be only a middle-aged, white, heterosexual, protestant male. Companies will operate in their own best interest and that will cause the glass ceiling to totally fall,” she adds. Betty Dick has another view. Women seem to be more interested in working today than in the past, says Dick, who was involved with the incorporation of Farragut in 1980. “I think it’s either interest or the economy behind it,” Dick says. “One of the major changes is they’re putting themselves out front.” A long-time member of the Farragut Municipal Planning Commission, Dick says women have always filled leadership roles in Farragut government. Presently there are five women to four men on the planning commission and there’s always been at least one woman on the board of mayor and alderman. Presently Dot LaMarche is vice mayor and Louise Povlin an alderman. Chelsey Riemann is public relations coordinator for Farragut with almost 12 years in public service. “I have had the privilege to work for an amazing director – Farragut Parks and Leisure Services Director Sue Stuhl – who joins the ranks of many females in leadership positions in the public sector,” Riemann says. She believes women in public service have the same opportunities as men to rise to top positions based on their knowledge and experience. As president of the Farragut West Knox Chamber of Commerce, Bettye Sisco has seen a jump in women ownership of businesses and women reaching higher levels of management. “Women find they have time to fulfill their bucket list and move forward with a business opportunity,” Sisco says, perhaps because women feel more ready to enter the business world. Sisco started in the cosmetics industry, ironically dominated by men. She’s seen it change with more women now at the helm in that industry. In her view, women are braver than they used to be, more willing to take chances, tackle their fears and dive into business ownership. They started asking questions, educating themselves and embracing outside-the-box thinking to create new and inventive ways to do business. “We waited a long time, perhaps studying it quietly before we jumped into it,” she adds. She sees women more accepted and respected as leaders whether as owners or managers. In her view the most successful business women are those who have a real passion and desire to succeed.

What happens when you drive 20 minutes to your favorite seafood market? You buy your own closer to home. That's what Phil and Becky Dangel did when they opened The Shrimp Dock of Farragut eight years ago, and subsequently purchased The Shrimp Dock in Bearden and opened another in Alcoa. Becky is in charge of operational issues but during busy times, can be found behind the counter. “I like eating and like eating fresh, really good food,” she says. “Fresh sustainably-fished seafood is not only part of my lifestyle, but it’s healthy as well.” She likes meeting customers and finding out what they’re making for dinner, hearing about recipes or great meals they’ve cooked. Grilling season brings out more men. “I think they think they’re king of the grill,” she laughs. Becky, with many years of retail experience, feels the secret to success is to pick something you're passionate about, that you enjoy and makes you happy.

Allison Sousa has been the executive director of the Farragut Business Alliance (FBA) for almost five years, but has been involved in non-profit management for over 20 years. While her background also includes marketing, financial services and hospitality management, the non-profit sector best aligns with her passions. “The idea of positively impacting communities has always been attractive to me,” said Sousa. “To see the efforts of groups of committed volunteers result in a new brick and mortar neighbor, or in policy changes with a wide impact, is exciting and fulfilling.” She encourages everyone to volunteer, whether with a business organization like the FBA, or with a charitable non-profit that aligns with their interests. “Volunteer work doesn’t have to take a lot of time to make an enormous impact,” she said. “Volunteerism shouldn’t be something we’re encouraging only students to pursue; it is something everyone should consider in order to see our communities grow and thrive.”
Cindy Floyd has had many positions in the financial realm but found her true love in 2008 when she moved to the consumer lending side. She's an assistant branch manager at Knoxville TVA Employees Credit Union. While Floyd has been in the banking industry for years she says she was "flabbergasted" at the differences between banks and credit unions. "Here at the credit union the members come first and we are here to serve," she said. Her credit union does everything a bank can. The credit union may not always be able to help with a loan but Floyd says she encourages members so next time may be a better out come. "We are here to help members embrace their financial goals and encourage sound decision making. Our members need to know they matter. Period," she adds. The best part of her day is when she's made someone laugh and they leave with a happy heart.

Susan Worthington The Southern Market 12 • WOMEN IN BUSINESS • MAY 19, 2016
Founded 20 years ago by mother and daughter, Frances Sexton and Susan Worthington, The Southern Market provides a truly unique shopping experience. The Southern Market offers an interiors marketplace of over 40 shops under one roof including a gallery of 50 local Etsy artists. The store provides an everchanging variety of stylish accessories, home décor, gifts, fashion and art. “The Southern Market has transitioned into a new generation of leadership with my mother retiring and now my daughter, Callie Worthington, helping in the store. We continue to encourage the store's central vision of supporting local smallbusiness owners,” said Susan Worthington. Southern Market embraces their distinct ability to give entrepreneurs, especially women, a chance to be selfemployed while also pursuing other careers or responsibilities. “We give women the opportunity to own their own business and to have a brick and mortar shop without the typical responsibilities of business ownership. If you have a vision for retailing, we have a place for you,” remarked Worthington.
Kim Taylor Corporate Quarters
Kim Taylor traded her title of property manager for owner/president of Corporate Quarters in June 2008 when the economy was strong. Sherry Williams, founder of Corporate Quarters decided to sell and for Taylor it was the time to buy. She was enjoying being a business woman when the economy fizzled. Keeping the doors open was her biggest challenge. “We had to downsize like everyone but we managed to keep our business going,” she says. Corporate Quarters offers pet friendly, fully furnished one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments locally and nationwide. Clients include business travelers on temporary or long-term assignments, contractors, families between real estate transactions or displaced from home, or simply anyone looking for a hotel alternative. Taylor’s advice to women who want their own business: “Be ready for hard work, low pay and just hang in there. You have to be diligent and patient but it will pay off over time.”

Career shift brings enjoyment
Variety keeps the job interesting
Carmen Smith, brought her personal experience of buying houses when she shifted careers to realtor for Coldwell Banker. In 2010, Smith was a hairdresser in Charleston, S.C., where her husband, then in the military, was stationed. “We had made about 15 to 16 moves in our lifetime,” she said. “We were never in one spot long.” She was looking for a house when a real estate agent told her she would be good at real estate. “So, while we were stationed in Charleston for my husband’s last duty, I decided to try my hand at something different before he retired,” Smith said. She joined Coldwell Banker United Realtors in Charleston in 2010 then joined Coldwell Banker Wallace & Wallace in 2014 and moved to Knoxville. Smith said she has enjoyed real estate. “You get to make people happy, and you get the chance to buy a house without spending your own money,” she said.
Wanda Carder marks 20 years with Coldwell Banker Wallace and Wallace this month. She was working at a title company and often dealt with CBWW Realtors at closings. She said “I really enjoyed working with the Realtors and decided that real estate was what I wanted to do.” One phone call and she was enrolled in real estate classes. She believes women are more oriented towards establishing relationships with potential buyers and sellers. “I do love where I work and working with my coworkers,” she says. Variety keeps the job interesting because every day is different. The best advice she has for a woman starting out in real estate is listen and learn. “We used to have cubicles and I would go into the office every day even if I didn’t have anything to do. I’d just sit and listen to other agents and learn so much from their conversations.”

Finding her niche
Real estate field has ‘unlimited potential’
Donna Holdaway grew up tagging along behind her grandfather at the family’s Witt Building Materials. At 18 she had her own tool box and an interest in houses. As a Realtor she loves nothing better than a fixer-upper. “That’s where my heart goes and I can see past it to the ‘what if’.” It all started when she was a single woman looking to buy her first house. “I asked my dad to inspect a house for me and he shot it down,” she laughs. Now with grown sons, her husband asked her three years ago what she wanted to do. The answer was to sell real estate and he said, “Go do it.” Her heart lies with millennials. “I want to show them there are a lot of good houses on the market, and priced right for people to invest in, giving it their personal touch. I love working with younger people and seeing them find their niche.”
Helping her parents find a home in Knoxville broadened Karen Coppock’s real estate experience from owning rental property to becoming a Realtor. “I enjoyed the process,” she says. “It’s also exciting working with sellers to prepare their house, then market and negotiate the sale so they can move forward.” After earning a B.A. in English from the University of Knoxville, her early career was spent in communications-related jobs. When her three children were younger, she was a stay-at-home mom and active school volunteer. She has advanced training and clients appreciate her loyalty, patience and expertise as a consistent top producer. “Selling or buying a home is a major life event. I’m honored and gratified to be able to help my clients through it.” Women have an edge in communications skills and a practical grasp of what makes a house functional. Real estate is a female-friendly field and Coppock believes one of great opportunity. “It has unlimited potential!”

Trading the classroom for the real estate office
Gina Johnson Coldwell Banker Wallace & Wallace®
Gina Johnson traded the classroom for the real estate office 20 years ago after teaching math at Farragut High School. Real estate was always something she considered and loves helping people find a house. According to a national survey she cites, the typical Realtor is a 57-year-old female. “There are men who do great but we usually end up working with the female of the household,” she says. Johnson thinks women better understand the emotions of buying a house. Technology has been the biggest change she’s seen. Early on there were cell phones and pagers but few emails. While there are situations where personal contact is best, other times texts or emails get the job done. “I left the lights on” used to be a phone call; now it’s a text. Owning a firm isn’t for her. “Everybody has a story, they’re interesting and they open up to you. I would miss that if I was an owner.”

Joy is in getting the job done
Never a dull moment with a career in real estate
Mary Parsons Realtor
Coldwell Banker Wallace & Wallace®
There has never been a dull moment with a career in real estate, according to Mary Parsons, realtor with Coldwell Banker Wallace & Wallace®. Parsons has been a realtor for 22 years, all with Coldwell Banker. This year, she has put together a team. Their name is Mary Parsons’ Professionals, Your Tennessee Home Team. She has three buyer’s agents working for her, Julie Ford, Stacy Jagger and Kara Scheetz. Together, they will be able to service their clients even more effectively. “I feel like I’m in the helping business, not the selling business,” Parsons said. “It’s an exciting career. There are a lot of long hours, and you have to have a strong commitment to helping people achieve their goals and being available to them.”
Debbie Yankey exceeds client’s expectations. With 21 years of real estate experience, all at Coldwell Banker Wallace & Wallace®, her goal is to bring a standard of care to each client that is unmet in the industry. “I strive to go the extra step, listen to what the buyers or sellers say. I try to get to know them first before I help them achieve their home goals,” she said. Yankey finished first overall at CBWW and first in total listings sold in the Farragut office in 2015. “This clearly shows the skill, knowledge, experience and commitment I have to accomplish what I love to do. Being a Realtor is not an 8 to 5 job, its 24/7. Not every agent is dedicated to such a strong work ethic,” she said. Judy McKenzie Coldwell Banker Wallace & Wallace®
Judy McKenzie, a dedicated realtor with 17 years experience at Coldwell Banker Wallace & Wallace®, Farragut, said her primary goal is “getting the job done” for her clients. “I’m good at my job and I work very hard for my clients,” she said. “It’s important to me that my seller’s house is sold and that my buyers find the home they are looking for.” She said her joy in her work comes from the sense of accomplishment found in completing a sale and finding the home her buyers will love. Asked what her advice for women going into business would be, Judy said, “Today's fast-paced world can be stressful. Find balance. You can't do everything but with careful planning and prioritization, you can find a healthy work-life balance." “We are looking for educated professional women”
Getting into the community
Patti Ettien Coldwell Banker Wallace & Wallace®
Robin Aggers Coldwell Banker Wallace & Wallace® 16 • WOMEN IN BUSINESS • MAY 19, 2016
When Patti Ettien's son graduated high school, the family moved to Kingston, TN, from Roswell, GA. She needed something to get her out of the house and into the community. The family’s many moves for her husband’s career sparked her interest in real estate. "I love meeting new clients and helping them find a house,” she says. Sometimes it’s hard to get a client to accept reality in terms of price. Presently, inventory is low but prices still haven’t increased dramatically. "I can help a client set a realistic price by showing them the competition, not just what has closed in their area. It helps the client to trust your judgement". A University of Tennessee grad, her first career was in accounting. In both fields she’s seen women move up. “Accounting had been a man’s game when I got out of school, but I was the first female on an audit staff in a Chattanooga CPA firm,” said Ettien.
Anne Williams Coldwell Banker Wallace & Wallace®
Farragut’s Coldwell Banker Wallace & Wallace® Broker, Anne Williams, loves the real estate industry and wants to share her enthusiasm and extensive experience with new recruits, “We are looking for educated, professional women to join our Farragut office. Age isn’t an issue as those reentering the workforce can make the best realtors.” The office hosts Career Night the third Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. People can learn more about us, the opportunities and our training program. Eight to ten languages are spoken at our office,” said Williams. “We’re on the cutting edge of social media marketing and hold continual classes to expand our knowledge and talents.” Williams is a non-competing broker after having been a multi-million-dollar producer for over ten years. She enjoys being involved with the agents. “I can be their coach, confidant, help brainstorm, set goals and offer fresh perspectives when needed.” Call Anne Williams at 865-966-1111 or email awilliams@cbww.com.
Real Estate ‘just felt right’
A shift in gears to real estate
Real Estate just felt right for Robin Aggers and allowed her to still be engaged in raising her children. She’s seen more women move into ownership positions and believes women have achieved a level of strong confidence and trust in their communities, nurturing and serving others. “We are givers,” she says. “We encourage each other to succeed and there is enough business for all of us. We are so blessed." She is vice president of membership for the Knoxville Women’s Council of Realtors which helps women learn leadership skills. “We are life-long learners forever adapting and moving forward,” she adds. She is also part of the committee for Realtors Political Action Committee. She likes being her own boss and advises other woman to “go for it.” Real estate, she says, is a field that takes a strong, organized leader who is understanding, caring, genuine, confident, flexible and provides “Service with a Smile” which is her motto.
After receiving her Masters degree in education, Megan Morris, a realtor with Coldwell Banker Wallace & Wallace® Realtors, shifted gears to real estate three years ago. “I love East Tennessee. It's beautiful," Morris said. “Moving from Nashville, we struggled to find a home here.”That struggle led her to become a licensed Realtor. “I enjoy using the skills I learned in education to help educate and advice my clients in their real estate transactions for this unique area,” she said. “You constantly have to creatively problem solve. I enjoy a job that allows me to help my clients methodically think through the facts or work around obstacles.” Morris recommended potential agents become knowledgeable about the different brokerages out there. “Coldwell Banker has been phenomenal to work with because of all the education and mentoring they provide their Realtors,” she said. “I couldn't have asked for a better group of ladies and gentlemen to work with.”

At first meeting Tracye you might be unsure if she will be too nice to negotiate one of the biggest negotiations of your life, but don't be fooled. Marlene O’Hanlon Knoxville Executive Suites
Business is not unlike teaching
Offering Hometown and personal banking
Marlene O’Hanlon left the classroom in 1983 for the business world when she became the owner of Knoxville Executive Suites. “Being in this business is not unlike teaching where working in a classroom you want to treat everyone equally and address concerns equally,” she says. She offers office space and support services for 82 businesses with two receptionists to greet a mix of tenants including attorneys, certified public accountants, financial planners, construction contractors and environmental engineers. She has three clients who have been with her for more than 20 years and one for 30. Her father was a business owner so she learned at an early age it’s not an eighthour day. “I might leave at five but if there’s a problem I’m the one who has to deal with it,” she says. The biggest challenge has been staying on top of technology. “I had a typewriter with a memory card when I first started,” she laughs.
Natasha Bohannon from TNBANK of Farragut loves that she can offer Hometown and personal banking. Located at 11200 Kingston Pike, the TNBANK of Farragut takes pride in offering an array of worldwide services in a true community bank. TNBANK believes in building meaningful relationships with all their clients. When customers call TNBANK, they talk to an individual and not a call center. The bankers know their customers by name. “I feel like we provide a better atmosphere because we truly care about our customers. We give exceptional customer service, offer expertise and pay better attention to details. We often receive positive feedback because we strive to make sure our customers feel like their needs aren’t just met, but that we are in a partnership to do what is best for them. I try to go above and beyond, and I love what I do,” said Bohannon. TNBANK provides a friendly staff and competitive personal banking, business banking, loans, mortgages and more.
Privileged to help.

Rene Cooper Knoxville TVA Employees Credit Union
Rene Cooper always had a head for numbers and interest in finance. She thought a career as an accountant lay ahead but instead is a branch manager for a TVA Credit Union. She most loves being able to help employees grow and help members understand the financial part of their lives and how important finance is to them. “Yes, I do see more women take an interest in finances and their credit and what it means for them,” Cooper says. “Women in this economy are realizing how much you need financial literacy to be able to manage your credit to buy things you want or need.” She sees more women entering top management in the financial field, due perhaps to better education about job opportunities. Her first job was a bank teller and she’s been able to grow up in the financial industry, now in a top position to take care of her members and their needs.

Believing in the art of dance
Lisa McKee Studio Arts for Dancers
Lisa McKee, owner, artistic director and instructor, at Studio Arts for Dancers strongly believes in dance education and the art of dance. She strives to make dancers’ time with her a true, wholesome, honest experience. “Our studio not only develops technique but also we stress dance theories and methodologies so our students learn the mind and body connection of dance. Our movement and music is always age appropriate. We follow a very specific syllabus, and our highly educated teaching staff provides a motivating environment. Our students gain confidence and body awareness while learning the value of hard work,” said McKee. Located at 1234 Rocky Hill Road, classes are available at Studio Arts from beginner to advance in ballet, tap, modern and jazz. For the highly skilled dancer and for deeper work and more innovative choreography, Go! Contemporary Dance Works, founded and directed by McKee, blends contemporary ballet with modern and aerial dance.
Specializing in foot and ankle surgery
Dr. Chris Testerman Knoxville Orthopaedic Clinic
Dr. Chris Testerman traded a nurse’s cap for medical school and has her own practice specializing in foot and ankle surgery at Knoxville Orthopaedic Clinic. Women make up only 11 percent of the male-driven field, which contrary to some opinions doesn’t take the strength of a linebacker to do. “You have to have confidence and there’s power in knowledge and experience. Any woman can do that,” she says, “and shouldn’t be afraid.” As boss, she likes the freedom to make decisions based on her patients’ needs but also has to deal with the business side – insurance companies and getting access to care for her patients. Having triplets, now 18, early in her practice helped her deal with the rigors of being a physician. She had to be organized, flexible and patient and still find time to enjoy life. Balancing family and work is her biggest challenge, but she’s found it’s possible.

Shae Seeber started her own business at the age of 14 teaching horseback riding lessons. Her entrepreneurial spirit has only grown over time; she now owns and operates her own business, Shae Design Studio. When she began working in the construction industry, the average person had no idea where to turn for their interior design and renovation needs. Seeber used her experience as an opportunity to create a business that provides those services to homeowners and contractors. “We show them their designs in our 3-D software so they can see what their project will look like before it begins,” said Seeber. Her business is a resource for people to come up with a vision for their projects. Her favorite part of being an entrepreneur has been the ability to hand pick her design team. “I get to pick the most amazing people to work with and that’s a real treat. Everyone gets along and we have a lot of fun!”

A dream that became a reality
Candace Viox Water Into Wine Bistro and Lounge
Owning a restaurant was a dream that became a reality for Candace Viox, a Farragut resident. Viox opened Water Into Wine Bistro and Lounge, located at 607 North Campbell Station Road, on Tuesday, May 10. “My mom always said, ‘If Christ turned water into wine, we could drink it,’” Viox said. “Plus, it was Christ's very first miracle!” Her decision to become a restaurateur was the result of her journey to find herself after the loss of her mother in 2011. In 2012, she enrolled in UT/Pellissippi State Community College’s culinary program, got her degree in culinary arts and restaurant management and interned at Season’s Innovative Bar & Grill before she opened her own restaurant. Viox said she wants Water Into Wine Bistro to be a warm, inviting, cozy social lounge and eatery that promotes relationships, connection opportunities and local patronage while offering artisan food pairings with wine.

No. 1 individual Keller Williams agent for Knoxville
Take a cue from successful women Women had another successful year in 2015. According to the Fortune 500 list, 2015 tied the record set for the highest number of female CEOs in America’s largest companies by revenue. Twenty-four women, including Mary Barra of General Motors, Meg Whitman of Hewlett-Packard and Ginny Rometty of IBM, made the list. Although women make up 45 percent of the labor force and only 5 percent head Fortune 500 companies, women are making greater strides than ever before. For example, in 1998, just one woman led a Fortune 500 company, according to Pew Research Center. Certain traits could help propel successful women to the top. Here’s a look at some of the ways female professionals can overcome professional hurdles and make their mark. • Be passionate about what you do. Women who maintain passion about their careers are more likely to overcome any challenges and stand out in the workplace. If your profession is not stoking any passion, explore alternate career opportunities. • Recognize your strengths. Today’s professionals are less likely than their predecessors to stick with one company or line of work for their entire working lives. Enlist help when you need it and never hesitate to ask for another perspective. • Make time for exercise. A sluggish body can make for a sluggish mind. Successful people need to be sharp, and exercise can help them maintain their mental focus. According to John J. Ratey, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, muscles send hormones rushing to the brain where they mix with a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. BDNF plays a role in brain cell growth and learning. Without it, brains can’t absorb new information or grow and learn. Exercise also helps relieve stress, which can make resolutions easier to see and make tasks less overwhelming. • Go easy on yourself. While many successful people strive for perfection, achieving perfection is unlikely, if not impossible. Successful people often admit to being their own worst critics, but don’t beat yourself up if you endure some trial and error.
