Stick with that the best you can,” Bettye advises. “Never forget the plan, but be aware change will inevitably happen. Be prepared to make those changes. Promote your business. Make business calls in person and utilize social media, but never forget the power of face to face business calls,” she adds. Women & Wine!

Linda Taylor,

Ellen Taylor Jones and Melanie Brown Dixie Lee Wines & Liquors

Dixie Lee Wines & Liquors is Farragut’s original wine and spirits store. “We’ve grown – every part of it, expanding our original floor space, increasing our extensive selection of wines, adding a 400 sq. ft. walk-in beer cooler filled with a wide variety of craft, domestic, import and local beers and a 12 tap growler station,” said Ellen. We are proud to offer a personalized tasting experience in our new state of the art tasting room. We conduct regular tastings on a variety of products and send invitations to each and every one of our email customers. Linda is the original owner with her husband, Sam. Her daughters, Melanie and Ellen, also owners, manage the business and work diligently to maintain a clean family friendly atmosphere. “We keep it simple… we treat our customers with respect. We’ve built our business on the relationships we’ve made throughout the years. Our future is bright and we are excited to see where it goes!” Ellen said.

Positivity breeds positivity

Diversify, Diversify, Diversify

Since opening her State Farm® agency in 1988 Cindy Doyle’s goal has been to help people manage everyday life, the unexpected, and realize dreams. She says a key to a successful business is working in a team environment. “ You can’t do it all. You’ll get a Super-Woman complex! As team leader, you help develop, coach, trust and reward those working with you.” “There is no perfect work/life balance. It seems to elude women and they feel guilt. Find your balance and avoid guilt,” she said. “Surround yourself with positive, successful people. My mother always said, ‘You are who you associate with and positivity breeds positivity.’ Successful people aren’t always people in business. They are in all walks of life.” For insurance needs call Cindy Doyle, State Farm Insurance®, 248 N Peters Rd, Ste 4, Knoxville. 865-690-6300; Mon-Fri 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Evenings and Saturdays by appointment.

When considering going into business Jill Jordan, owner of The Consignment Shoppe in West Knoxville, advocates diversity. “Diversity is critical to overall success in three important areas: education, career and your product line,” she said. “In education even if majoring in art or engineering, diversify. Take economics and marketing classes too.” “It’s okay to take jobs out of your comfort zone. They can make you well rounded and be invaluable experience later. Every job I’ve had in retail, furniture or clothing presented the experience I inevitably needed for my business,” said Jordan. “Remember, you can’t be all things to all people, but diversify your product lines. This will stabilize your sales throughout the year and meet customer demands.” The Consignment Shoppe @Campbell Station, 11312 Station West Dr., Ste. 102 offers clothing for men and women and home décor. Open Mon-Sat. 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Visit www.facebook.com/ theconsignmentshoppe or call 865-675-7222.

Strike a Balance in Life ndrea White, President of The Stokely Company is a reflection of calm in the midst of a demanding corporate environment that needs her critical attention in many areas; the latest being the grand opening of the Staybridge Suites, West-Knoxville. She attributes her calm approach to experiences over the years in the corporate arena and more importantly as a mother of two, especially her son, Jack, who is severely mentally disabled. “When blessed with Jack I was a Type A personality. He’s taught me more than I could ever express. You can’t get too uptight about things. Things don’t have to be perfect. Be patient and accepting.” White is successful with this approach to life. When asked about her advice for others contemplating opening a business, she said, “Don’t become so busy that you lose pace with

faith, family and friends. Strike a balance. Do what’s right. Make choices guided by a moral compass. Become involved in charities, realizing that when you get involved and are helping others, you “pay it forward”. Have a game plan; a vision; stay focused and build on that. Take elementary steps to grow the business. Priorities should include funding, location, the market (the clientele) and surround yourself with smart people!” For personal balance she often reflects on Luke 12:48, “...From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.” White, a native Mississippian, made Tennessee her home in the 70’s when seeking an avenue for advanced degrees. She had already attained a bachelor's degree in

business administration and statistics from the University of Mississippi and broken barriers in the corporate world by attaining a management position with Eastman Kodak in Kingsport. While there she discovered a joint degree program at The University of Tennessee that allowed her to attain a MBA and a law degree. She came to Knoxville and was recruited after graduation by Stokely VanCamp, Inc., founded by the Stokely family. William B. Stokely III, was CEO at that time. “I thought my success was based on my ability and skills,” White laughed explaining that in the mid 1970’s; early ‘80’s Fortune 100 companies were putting women on the ‘fast-track’ in order to meet EEOC requirements. She says that program opened doors for her. However, it has been her skills and ability that kept her in the fore-

front of management since she joined Stokely in 1981. Initially she headed up the company's World's Fair activities; then relocated to corporate headquarters in Indianapolis as part of Strategic Planning. White ultimately was on a team assisting in the company's acquisition by Quaker Oats. At that point The Stokely Company was founded by Mr. Stokely, CEO/President, which evolved into an entrepreneurial business, headquartered on Campbell Station Road in West Knoxville. In 2007 White was named president of The Stokely Company, parent to numerous area businesses which have included restaurants, other hospitality properties, real estate development, National Park Concessions and more. She serves on the boards for BB & T, East Tennessee Children’s Hospital , Breakthrough Corporation, a non-

profit agency founded by parents of adult children living with Autism; Koinonia Foundation, a nonprofit agency for programs for children and adults with multiple disabilities; Board of Trustees, King University, Bristol. She is a member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church, The Tennessee and Knoxville Bar Associations and the Executive Women’s Association. The Stokely Company recently opened Staybridge Suites, WestKnoxville at 11319 Campbell Lakes Drive, an affiliate of the InterContinental Hotels Group which includes Holiday Inn® and InterContinental ® Hotels. It offers full kitchens, long term petfriendly stays for vacationing families, those relocating or in the area on business. Robin Purvis Farragut Wine & Spirits

Make your business unique

Buy with Confidence ... Sell with Success

Robin and David Purvis opened Farragut Wine & Spirits on Kingston Pike in 2007. They've worked to see their dream grow into a 10,000 sq.ft retail space with the capacity to add 4,000 more. It’s the largest liquor store east of Nashville; the third largest in Tennessee and features a Beer Cave and Beer Growler station. With the expansion last fall they dedicated a large area to unique, quality non-alcoholic products from local sources (when possible). You’ll find gourmet foods, gifts, candles, candy, Orca ice coolers manufactured in Nashville by Knoxville natives and more! If considering business ownership, heed Robin’s advice, “Be prepared to work hard. Don’t reach for the sky at first, build slowly. Make your business unique, offering products no one else has. But many things haven’t changed,” said Angie. “Buyers, sellers and other Realtors want someone they can trust; someone who is honest and even empathetic. On the ‘other-side’ of nearly every transaction is another Realtor. I want them to want to do business with me. These relationships, and aligning myself with the top real estate company in our market, empowers me get my listings sold and my buyer-clients the house they want.” Call Angie Lloyd with Realty Executives Associates, Farragut 865-719-3233 or 865-693-3232.

Non-profit work fullfilling

Allison Sousa Farragut Business Alliance

8 • WOMEN IN BUSINESS • JUNE 18, 2015

Allison Sousa is executive director of the Farragut Business Alliance, but “this ain’t her first non-profit rodeo.” As president & CEO of the Loudon County Chamber of Commerce for eight years, she helped launch its Education Foundation and community leadership program. Later, she spun-off the non-profit Economic Ventures from Knoxville’s Community Development Corporation and led it for three years. Along the way, she put her BBA and MBA degrees to work garnering experience in hospitality management, higher education, banking and marketing. Today, in addition to the FBA, Sousa’s husband, two teen-aged boys and her own small company keep her busy. She has found that non-profit work especially in community development satisfies both her professional goals and her desire to give back. She believes “finding a job that truly makes a lasting impact on a community is less about ‘work’ and more about ‘fulfillment,’” and encourages young professionals to consider the same.

Job hunting tips for young women Young women preparing to enter the workforce may discover a job market that’s difficult to crack. Getting a foot in the door in your desired field is not always easy, but young women looking to land that first job out of college can consider the following tips to help them take that all-important first step toward a rewarding career. • Decide on a path. Blindly searching for work or any old job is a recipe for an aimless search that likely won’t land you a job you enjoy. Choose what it is that you want to do and who you hope to do it for, and then you can proceed with a more refined search that does not include you spending time pursuing positions you don’t want. • Don’t be afraid to seek advice. Once you determine some companies you may want to work for, don’t be afraid to seek advice from people who already work for those companies. Even if such business-

es don’t have any current openings, you might be able to schedule informational meetings. Treat such meetings like you would a job interview, asking questions about the industry and what you can do to get your foot in the door. Once such meetings have concluded, send a handwritten thank you note to the person who took time out of their day to give you the informational meeting. • Learn from each job interview. Many people, especially young people just starting out, go through many job interviews before finally landing a job. Each interview is not just an opportunity to land a job or hone your interviewing skills, but also a chance to learn what employers are looking for. Many interviews for entry-level jobs are similar regardless of the industry, so make note of your responses that went over well and those that might need a little more work.

• Be prepared to explain why you should be hired. Job seekers should be able to explain both their enthusiasm for the job and why they are right for that job. Keep your description of your capabilities concise, but don’t be afraid to confidently state why you are the best possible candidate. • Look for volunteering opportunities. After you have targeted a field you want to work in, you may find that there are few paying opportunities within that field. But you might be able to volunteer or even pursue an internship if you only recently graduated from college. Volunteering or accepting an unpaid internship is a great way to start making some contacts and gaining some legitimate experience, and working for free might just indicate to prospective employers that you are serious about pursuing a particular career and not just landing a job.

Switch jobs with grace and decorum Women leave jobs for various reasons. Some women cite disparities in pay, an inability to advance through the company or incompatibility with a particlar place of business as their reasons for seeking new employment, while others leave jobs to take time off for family obligations, only to reenter the workforce at a later time. The Bureau of Labor Statistics say the average person changes jobs 10 to 15 times (with an average of 11 job changes) over the course of a career. Reports about employees in Fortune 500 companies have found, while women make up nearly 50 percent of these companies, they represent just 7.5 percent of top earners. Dissatisfaction with their income encourages some women to look for greener pastures. Transitioning between jobs is common, but professionals can take certain steps to ensure their transition works out for them and does not burn any bridges along they way. * Have a definitive reason for leaving. It's foolish to change jobs on a whim. Be

clear about why you are leaving and whether problems can be remedied by speaking up or if leaving for another company really is the best solution. Having firm reasons for your resignation will enable you to leave with more confidence and conviction. * Provide enough notice to the company. If you have been working in a particularly poor environment, it may be tempting to run out the door even before your written resignation has finished printing. This may not bode well for future recommendations and leave your name tarnished within the industry. Instead, give ample notice and find a mutually acceptable window of time

in which your position will be filled. While two weeks is standard, some positions may require more or less time. It's best not to drag your exit out too long though. * Meet with your boss first. Don't let a boss find out about your intentions to leave the company through the workplace gossip mill. It is always more professional to keep plans to yourself and show your boss the respect of hearing about your decision to leave first. Do so in person and not over the phone or via email. * Continue to do your job to the best of your abilities. Giving notice is not a ticket to goofing off or participating in an office vacation. Slacking off damages good will

and is a surefire way to burn some bridges. Put in your best effort until the day you leave the company behind. * Avoid making negative comments. When discussing your reasons for leaving, be diplomatic but honest. Similarly, do not talk poorly about your former job to your new employer. You may inadvertently portray yourself as a disgruntled employee. Furthermore, word travels fast within many industries, and a loose tongue may compromise future networking opportunities. * Maintain decorum even if it was not your idea to leave. Being fired or downsized can hurt, particularly when you thought you were doing a good job. Remain cool and always be professional. How you conduct yourself when facing adversity could speak well to your future employers. William Shakespeare may have said that a person is remembered for his entrances and exits, and this is particularly true in the workforce. When it is time to leave an employment position for a new one, do so with grace and humility.

Tips for juggling work and family Balancing work and family is a juggling act faced by many working parents. Responsibilities often overlap, and that can make solving the riddle of balancing work and family that much more difficult. Single-income households have decreased dramatically over the last several decades, as escalating costs of living have made it difficult for many families to get by on just one income. But working parents can employ several strategies, both at the office and at home, as they attempt to make the job of juggling commitments a little less difficult. • Around the office a major concern many parents have as they attempt to balance work and family is that they are not spending enough time at home with their children or not paying enough attention to their kids or even their spouses when they are home. One way to find more time at home is to inquire about the possibility of working remotely. Advancements in technology that have made it easier to remotely communicate with clients and coworkers has led to an influx of work-from-home employees. While working from home does not mean workloads will diminish, it does save the time commuting to and from work, and that translates to more time at home. • Avoid too much water cooler chitchat and resist the temptation to check personal emails or text messages while at work. Such distractions can eat up a considerable amount of

time over the course of a workday, making it harder to get the job done in a typical workday and forcing them to stay late or bring work home. • While coworkers love a team player willing to pitch in, routinely accepting extra work can drastically cut into the time people have to do their own jobs as well as the time they have to spend with their families. Helping coworkers out in a pinch is fine, but resist any urges to take on more than can be reasonably handled. • At home working parents who want the time they have with their children each night to be more substantive can turn off their devices. Another way to create a greater balance between work and family life is to make more efficient use of time at home. For example, rather than spending an hour each night making dinner, working parents can use a slow cooker so family meals are ready the moment everyone arrives home at night. That frees up time the family can spend together. Cut back on the time families spend watching television each night. Limit television time to an hour or two each night, using the extra time to connect with one another. Many working parents strive to create a greater balance between work and family. While doing so is not always easy, men and women can employ strategies at work and at home to make the challenge a little less complicated.

Did you know? According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 60 percent of the more than 662,000 master’s degrees awarded during the 2011-12 school year, the most recent year for which statistics are available, were earned by women. The most popular master’s degree among women was a Master of Business Administration and Management, with more than 45,000 such degrees awarded during the given time frame. Education and social work were the second and third most popular master’s degrees earned by women, respectively. While business administration and management took the top spot among women seeking master’s degrees, the most popular bachelor’s degree awarded to women during the same school year was a Bachelor of Psychology, which was slightly more popular among women than a Bachelor of Business Administration and Management. According to the Small Business Administration, a small business is defined as an enterprise with fewer than 500 employees. By that measure, the SBA notes there are nearly 28 million small businesses in the United States, more than 22 million of which are selfemployed men and women with no additional payroll or employees. With so many small businesses to choose from, it’s no wonder that more than half the working population works in a small business. The SBA also highlights the important role that small businesses play in generating new jobs, noting that, since 1995, more than 65 percent of the net new jobs have been generated by small businesses. Despite their strength in numbers, small businesses still face an uphill battle to survive for the long haul. SBA statistics indicate that seven out of 10 new employer firms survive at least two years, but those figures drop considerably as time goes on, with only 50 percent surviving at least five years, one-third making it to their tenth anniversary and just 25 percent staying in business for 15 years or more.

Advocating for a strong image of child

Kim Turner, co-founder of Tennessee Trash Service, LLC, a Loudon County based company started in 2004 by Turner and her father, is a wife and mother. It started out with one customer and one truck in 2004 as a means of a job for Turner when she suddenly lost her job while expecting her third child. The company has grown to the third biggest waste hauling company in the area. With 38 trucks and 54 employees and over 22,000 customers, the company has skyrocketed since it's inception. Turner graduated FHS in 1987 and UT in 1990, in accounting. She married Steve Turner, her high school sweetheart and went on to have four children. The company is a family operated business. The operation's employees are also like family and Turner says she enjoys the camaraderie and happiness that spending all day with her friends makes. Tenneessee Trash Service can be reached at 865966-0086.

In a search for quality educational experiences for her three sons in 2011, Ellie Kittrell met a community group planning to bring a children’s museum to Knoxville. Her family had visited several museums across the country and often wondered why our community didn’t offer the same. Ellie began as a Community Outreach Coordinator and was hired as Executive Director of The Muse Knoxville in 2014. The small children’s science museum teaches STEM topics through the arts and is growing in popularity. Ellie says, “We believe strongly in the importance of play and informal learning experiences to inspire creativity, innovation, and problem solving . . . critical needs in workforce development. We must embrace our youngest citizenry as the strong, smart and important people they are and The Muse is an organization that embodies this spirit.” Visit www.themuseknoxville.org

Maintain your productivity when working from home Telecommuting has grown more and more common over the last decade. Thanks in large part to advancements in technology that make it easier than ever before to connect remotely with coworkers, telecommuting is now something more and more companies are embracing. According to Global Workplace Analytics, a consulting and research firm that focuses on emerging workplace strategies, the total telework growth from 2011 to 2012, the most recent year for which statistics are available, was 3.8 percent. But those figures don’t tell the entire story, as the rise of telecommuters increased considerably since 2006, when the number of teleworkers grew by 26 percent over the year prior. Telecommuting can pay dividends for workers and businesses alike. Workers benefit from telecommuting in a variety of ways. Working parents find telecommuting drastically cuts back on or even eliminates childcare costs, saving them thousands of dollars per year. Working from home also saves workers’ vehicles from the everyday wear and tear of driving to and from work, potentially adding years to a vehicle’s life expectancy. Businesses also benefit from allowing employees to work remotely. Small businesses may need less office space if many of their employees work from home, saving them substantial amounts of money in rent. In addition, businesses who allow workers to telecommute may not need to spend as much on computers and other tools for their employees, as many telecommuters use their own personal computers when working from home. While telecommuting can benefit employee and employer, the success of such an arrangement depends largely on the employees who will be working from home. Men and women who work from home often find they have more freedom at home than they did when working in an office, and how they handle that freedom will go a long way toward determining how successful they are at telecommuting. The following are a handful of strategies telecommuters can employ to ensure their work-from-home experi26 • WOMEN IN BUSINESS • JUNE 18, 2015

ment is a productive success. • Stick to a schedule. Workers who still commute to work adhere to a schedule, and so should telecommuters. Sticking to a schedule will allow you to maintain the same level of productivity you aspired to when working in the office, and a schedule will ensure your personal life does not encroach on your professional life. • Let others know your schedule. Though you’re now working from home, your schedule likely has not changed. You may be able to sleep in a little later because you no longer have to commute, but your workday is likely still eight hours. Once you have established your schedule, let others in your household, whether it’s a spouse, your children or roommates, know when you will be working on a daily basis. This reduces the likelihood that your housemates will distract you or walk into your office while you’re on a video chat or conference call with colleagues or clients. • Ask for a work phone. Many companies who allow employees to telecommute will provide a phone for such workers. This phone is linked to the same network workers use in the office, and it’s a wholly separate line from your personal lines at home. It’s important that telecommuters keep a separate phone solely for work so their personal and professional messages do not get mixed up, which can make it more difficult for men and women to do their jobs. • Use the technology at your disposal. One of the ways technology has made it easier to work from home is by providing a number of ways workers can stay in constant and instant contact with their coworkers. But such technology is only useful if telecommuters make it work for them. Video conferencing allows telecommuters to conduct “face-to-face” meetings with coworkers, while instant messaging is a valuable tool to stay in touch with coworkers who you work with directly. Use these programs to your advantage, and you’ll notice you’re not only more productive but also still able to maintain a personal connection with your coworkers.
